HP Designjet Z6200, Z6800, and Z6600 Photo Printer Series - How to Update the Firmware

This document is for HP Designjet Z6200, Z6800, and Z6600 Photo Printer Series.
The first step to take when trying to clear an error with the printer is to check that the firmware installed in the printer is the latest available. Firmware updates often include fixes for common problems, and simply updating the firmware can often resolve the problem. New firmware can be found using the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page.

Embedded Web Server / HP Printer Utility

Update the firmware using the HP Utility or the Embedded Web Server.
Windows:
  1. Open the HP Utility.
  2. In the HP Utility, select your printer.
  3. Click the Support tab.
  4. Select Firmware Update.
Mac OS:
  1. Open the HP Utility.
  2. Select Support.
  3. Select Firmware Update.
Embedded Web Server:
  1. Type your printer's IP address into your web browser on your computer.
  2. Click the Setup tab.
  3. Select Firmware update.
Follow the onscreen instructions to download the firmware file and store it on your hard disk. Then select the downloaded file and click Update.
If you experience very slow progress while uploading the firmware file to the printer, the reason could be that you are using a proxy server. In that case, try bypassing the proxy server and accessing the Embedded Web Server directly.
  • In Internet Explorer 10 for Windows, go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings, and then select the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box. Alternatively, for more precise control, click theAdvanced button and add the printer's IP address to the list of exceptions, for which the proxy server is not used.
  • In Safari for MAC OS X, go to Safari > Preferences > Advanced and click the Proxies: Change Settings button. Add the printer's IP address or its domain name to the list of exceptions, for which the proxy server is not used.
The firmware includes a set of the most commonly used paper presets. Extra paper presets can be downloaded separately.
During the firmware update process, the printer is restarted.
If you press Cancel, the firmware update is cancelled.
If you press OK, the firmware update continues, and you are asked to select the region of the world in which the printer will be used.

USB firmware update

If it is not possible to perform a firmware update using the Embedded Web Server (for instance, if the printer has a System Error and the Embedded Web Server is inaccessible), it is still possible to do it using a USB flash drive.
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Make sure that your USB flash drive contains a valid FMW firmware file and no other files.
    Remarque :
The USB memory stick must have at least 1GB of capacity. The USB memory stick must contain only the firmware file with no other content and must be formatted with FAT32.
  3. Connect the USB flash drive to the USB host port on the Formatter.
  4. Turn on the printer and follow the instructions on the front panel.

Forced firmware update

When the printer is started for the first time, it may automatically request a firmware update in order to fix some known issues. You can respond in one of the following ways.
  • Use the USB flash drive provided in the box with the printer.
When a firmware update is requested, you should find a USB flash drive in the box, containing the new FMW firmware file. Follow the instructions in the flier accompanying the USB flash drive.
    Remarque :
The USB flash drive is provided only to update the printer's firmware. No other uses of the USB flash drive are supported.
    Remarque :
If the USB flash drive is not in the printer box, or fails to work properly, then download the firmware instead.
  • Download the FWM firmware file from the HP Web site.
Store the file in a standard USB flash drive with no other files.
    Remarque :
The USB memory stick must have at least 1GB of capacity. The USB memory stick must contain only the firmware file with no other content and must be formatted with FAT32.
  • To perform the firmware update. Connect the flash drive to the formatter's USB host port which is next to the network port
Follow the instructions on the front panel.
  • Skip the firmware update.
If you cannot find the USB flash drive and you have no Internet connection, you can skip the forced firmware update temporarily by pressing the OK key on the front panel three times, and the printer continues with the initialization sequence. Make sure that the firmware update is performed later. The printer requests the firmware update every time that it starts, until the update is performed.
