HP+ printer setup (HP Smart app)

Use the HP Smart app to set up and use the exclusive features of an HP+ printer.

Set up the printer with HP Smart and activate HP+ features

Install the HP Smart app to connect your printer to the network and to your computer or mobile device, and then set up your HP+ account.

Prepare for a network set up with the printer. USB connection setups are not supported with HP+ printers.

Place the printer and the computer or mobile device near the network router. For a wired network setup, connect the network cable to the printer Ethernet port and to an available port on the router or access point. At the printer port, the green light should be steady and the orange activity light should blink.
Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during the setup.
Enable Bluetooth on the computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.
After installing HP Smart for iOS and Android, enable the mobile device location service and allow the app to use your location. This is used to find your printer, network connection, and offer regional services. Your location information is not tracked and sent to HP as part of the setup process.

Make sure the printer hardware is set up. Remove all packing materials from the outside and inside of the printer, plug in and turn on the printer, and install the ink or toner cartridges.

Download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com (Android, Apple iOS), HP Smart - Microsoft Store (Windows, in English), or HP Smart - Mac App Store (macOS, in English).

Open the app, on the Welcome screen click Manage options, and then select Continue or Accept All.
Click Set Up a New Printer.
Select Sign in to sign into your HP account. Follow the steps to find the verification code if prompted, and then log in with your user name (email address) and password. Click Add Printer, and then follow the steps to add your printer.
Select your printer name, enter the Wi-Fi password or let the app access the password, and then click Continue.
To complete the secure connection, go to the printer to allow the app setup to continue.
- Printers with a control panel display: Touch the check icon on the App is attempting to set up this printer message.
- Printers without a control panel display: Press the Information button .
On the Printer connected to Wi-Fi screen, click Continue.
On the Connected Printing Services screen, click Manage options, and then select Continue or Accept All.
On the HP+ offer screen, click Continue, and then click Activate HP+ or Confirm.
Sign into your HP account.

If you do not have an account yet, follow the steps provided to create a user name and password, and select your region.
Continue with the steps to set up your account and redeem the free printing and Instant Ink offer.

Note:
HP Instant Ink is a subscription service separate from HP+ that you enroll in, pay for monthly, and can be canceled anytime. The Instant Ink trial is risk-free. If you do not like it, you can cancel or change plans anytime. Learn more at HP Instant Ink.
On the Enter your details to receive a new [ink/toner] cartridge screen, select a plan, enter your shipping and billing information, and then click Continue.
On the Print from other devices screen, select Send link or Skip sending link. Printing from other mobile devices or desktops is enabled by installing the HP Smart app.

The setup is complete and you can start printing. If the setup was not completed, the printer does not print and an alert displays to finish the setup in the HP Smart app.

What are the requirements to use HP+?

Create or sign in to an HP account during printer setup.

Use of only Original HP ink or toner for the lifetime of the printer, obtained either through HP Instant Ink or purchased from local retailers or the HP Store.

What is the HP Smart app and its requirements?

The HP Smart app is the recommended printing software for your printer and includes standard and advanced features and settings. The features and settings vary by printer model and country/region.

HP Smart app requirements:

An HP printer (HP Smart Advanced requires an HP+ or eligible printer)
An HP Smart account
A computer or mobile device with:
- Windows 10 Redstone 5 (version 1809) or later
- macOS Big Sur (11.0) or later
- Android Pie (9.0) or later
- Apple iOS, iPadOS 15 or later

What if my cloud printer is missing, offline, or unavailable in the HP Smart app?

If the printer is missing, Offline, or Unavailable in the HP Smart app, check the printer and device connection, and then sign in to your HP Smart account.

Make sure your device and printer are connected to the same network.
Open the HP Smart app, and then sign in to your account.
Wait a few minutes for the HP Smart app to reconnect and update the printer connection status.
- If Ready displays next to the printer, you are done.
- If Offline or Unavailable displays next to the printer, go to HP printer is offline or not responding for more information.
- If the printer is missing from the home screen, click Add Printer or the Add icon , and then follow the prompts to re-add your printer to the app.

What do I do if the advanced scan features are missing (HP Smart app)?

The advanced scan features might be missing in the HP Smart app if your printer is not eligible for HP Smart Advance, you did not create or sign in to an HP account during printer setup, or you need to sign in to your account again to access the features.

Note:

HP Smart Advanced includes Text Extract, Scribble, Book, Multi-Item, and ID Card.

Open the HP Smart app, and then make sure you are signed in to your account.
- If the advanced features are now available, you are done.
- If the advanced features are still missing, continue with these steps.
Make sure your printer meets the HP Smart Advance requirements.
- An HP printer (HP Smart Advanced requires an HP+ or eligible printer)

- A computer or mobile device with:

How do I resolve account registration and app setup errors?

Troubleshoot account registration problems, incomplete setups, and other errors that might display when setting up a printer with the HP Smart app.

How do I use HP Smart Advance scanning tools?

HP+ printers include HP Smart Advance scanning features in the HP Smart app as an additional benefit of printer ownership.

When you set up your printer and sign in with your HP+ account, you automatically get access to HP Smart Advance.

HP Smart Advance tools include:

Multi-item recognition: Scan multiple items and automatically separate each into individual pages.
Book scanning: Flatten and automatically separate pages and save to a single file.
Auto heal: Remove distracting marks such as hole punches and hands from the scanned file.
Text extract: Edit, copy, and share text directly from a scan file.
Flatten pages: Automatically flatten curved pages.

What if the printer did not connect to the network?

Check for network issues and review setup requirements if the printer failed to connect.

Check the network connection: Move the printer and computer or mobile device closer to the WI-Fi router, and then check if the signal quality improved. Try opening a website to see if the internet connection is working properly. If Wi-Fi is slow or intermittent, restart the router by disconnecting the power cord, wait 15 seconds, and then reconnect it.
Printer is off or in sleep mode: Touch the printer touchscreen or press the Power button to wake the printer and put it in a ready state. Sometimes the printer status might display Offline when it is actually ready.
Restart the printer: Restarting the printer can clear possible error conditions and restore the Wi-Fi connection.
Check the printer Wi-Fi signal: If your printer has a light next to a Wireless icon or button , make sure the light is on. Check the wireless settings to make sure the signal is turned on.
Print a Wireless Test Report: Search the HP Customer Support website for your printer model, and then search for self test page to find the document on how to print and evaluate the report.
