HP LaserJet MFP M232-M237 printers - Error codes and blinking lights

This document is for HP LaserJet MFP M232dw, M232dwc, M233sdn, M233sdw, M233dw, M234sdwe, M234sdw, M234sdne, M234sdn, M234dwe, M234dw, M236sdn, M236sdw, M236dw, and M236d printers.

The following sections describe the most common error conditions with combinations of blinking (flashing) lights displayed on the printer control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking light pattern that displays on the control panel, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Er (Error) codes

The control panel displays Er followed by a 2-digit error code.

Er/01 displays

An Er/01 error message indicates the input tray is empty.

Load paper into the input tray or remove and reload the stack of paper.

Er/02 displays

An Er/02 error message indicates the cartridge access door is open.

Verify that the cartridge access door is fully closed.

Er/03 displays

An Er/03 error message indicates the printer failed to pick a sheet of paper to print.

Remove the stack of paper from the tray and check the condition of the paper. Reload the paper, and then try to print, copy or scan. For detailed troubleshooting, go to Printer Does Not Pick Paper.

Er/04, Er/05, or Er/06 displays

An Er/04, Er/05, or Er/06 error message indicates a paper jam.

Find and clear the printer of any jammed paper, or reset the printer if the printer has no jammed paper. For detailed troubleshooting, go to Paper Jam Error.

Er/07 displays

An Er/07 error message indicates the toner cartridge is missing or not installed correctly.

To resolve the issue, install the missing toner cartridge. If the toner cartridge is missing, skip to the step to Install a new toner cartridge.

Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.

Step 1: Remove and reinstall the toner cartridge

Open the cartridge access door, remove the toner cartridge, reinstall it, and then try to print. For more detailed information, go to Replacing the Toner Cartridge.

If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Install a new toner cartridge

Replace the toner cartridge with a new toner cartridge and try to print.

If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Service the printer

If you have completed all the previous steps and the issue persists, continue to the Service the printer section at the end of this document.

Er/08 displays

An Er/08 error indicates that the toner cartridge is very low and the cartridge setting is set to stop.

To continue printing:

Open HP Smart and select your printer.
Click Advanced settings.

note:
For Windows 7 and 8, open HP Printer Assistant, select Print, and then click Printer Home Page (EWS).
Go to System, and then Supply settings.
Change Very Low Setting to Continue.

To resolve the issue, replace the cartridge.

Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.

Step 1: Replace the low or empty toner cartridge

Replace the toner cartridge with a new toner cartridge and try to print. If the error persists, continue to the next step. For more detailed information, go to Replacing the Toner Cartridge.

Step 2: Service the printer

If you have completed all the previous steps and the issue persists, continue to the Service the printer section at the end of this document.

Er/11, or Er/14, or Er/17 displays

The errors might display for the following reasons:

The toner cartridge is not compatible with the printer.
The toner cartridge has been protected on another printer.

Replace the affected supplies.

Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.

Step 1: Replace the incompatible toner cartridge

Replace the toner cartridge with a new toner cartridge and try to print. If the error persists, continue to the next step. For more detailed information, go to Replacing the Toner Cartridge.

Step 2: Service the printer

If you have completed all the previous steps and the issue persists, continue to the Service the printer section at the end of this document.

Er/20 displays

An Er/20 error message indicates an error with the toner cartridge sensor.

Remove the toner cartridge and reinstall it. If the error persists, turn off the printer from the main power outlet, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn it on. If the error still persists, continue to the following steps:

Step 1: Replace the toner cartridge

To replace a missing or old toner cartridge, open the cartridge access door, remove the old toner cartridge, and then install a new one. For more detailed information, go to Replacing the Toner Cartridge.

Step 2: Service the printer

If you have completed all the previous steps and the issue persists, continue to the Service the printer section at the end of this document.

Er/23 displays

An Er/23 error message indicates the printer is running low on memory.

To resolve the error, press the Cancel button to cancel the current job. Break the job into smaller jobs that contain fewer pages and resend. Avoid doing multiple tasks at a time such as scanning while printing.

Er/26 displays

An Er/26 error message indicates the printer has experienced a general engine error.

To resolve the error, press the Resume button to continue. If the error repeats, turn off the printer, wait for 30 seconds, and turn on the printer. If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

Er/30 displays

An Er/30 error message indicates an issue with the scanner.

To resolve the error, make sure that the protective sheet is removed from the scan glass. Turn off the device, wait 30 seconds, and then turn it on. If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

Er/50, Er/51, Er/52, Er/54, Er/55, Er/58, or Er/59 displays

An Er/50, Er/51, Er/52, Er/54, Er/55, Er/58, or Er/59 error message indicates the printer is in an error state due to an issue in the main engine.

To resolve the error, turn off the device, wait 30 seconds, and then turn it on. If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

Er/66 displays

An Er/66 error message indicates the Wi-Fi hardware is not detected.

To resolve the error, press the Resume button to continue without the Wi-Fi hardware or turn off the printer, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn on the printer. If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

Er/77 displays

An Er/77 error message indicates secure device failure.

To resolve the error, turn off the printer, wait for 30 seconds, and then and turn on the printer. If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

Go and P codes

The control panel number counter indicator displays Go or P followed by a 2-digit code.

Go/01 displays

This condition indicates the printer is in a manual paper feed mode.

Load the correct paper type and size for the print job in the input tray, and then press the Resume button

to continue or press the Cancel button

to cancel the print job.

Go/02 displays

This condition indicates the printer is processing a manual duplexing print job and needs your assistance to finish the print job.

To finish the print job, remove the stack of printed pages from the output tray, and then load the stack with the printed side facing down and the top edge of the stack into the printer. Press the Resume button

to continue or press the Cancel button

to cancel the print job.

Go/03 displays

This condition indicates the paper type or size loaded in the input tray is different from the paper type or size specified in the print job settings.

To finish the print job, load the correct paper type and size that matches the print job settings into the input tray. Press the Resume button

to continue, or press the Cancel button

to cancel the print job.

Go/06 (Wireless only) displays

This condition indicates the printer has received a request to connect to this printer using Wi-Fi Direct.

Press the Resume button

to connect, or press the Cancel button

to stop.

P2 displays

This condition indicates an ID Copy job has been started.

When the Open Lid

light blinks, open the lid and turn over the identification card, close the lid, and then press the Resume button

to resume or press the Cancel button

to cancel the job.

Status light color patterns (M232dw, M232dwc, M233dw, M234dw, M234dwe, and M236dw)

Find the Status light pattern, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Solid white light on the bar

The printer is idle and not connected to a Wi-Fi network. Connect the printer to a Wi-Fi network.

Solid white light on the bar and the Cartridge light is on

The cartridge toner level is low. Replace the toner cartridge, for more information, go to Replacing the Toner Cartridge.

Solid white light on the bar and the Cartridge light blinks

The cartridge toner level is very low. Replace the toner cartridge, for more information, go to Replacing the Toner Cartridge.

note:
In case the setting is configured to Continue in EWS and the toner cartridge is very low, no error code displays. If the setting is configured to Stop, Er/08 displays.

Solid white light on the bar and the cartridge light blinking

White light flashes on the bar

The printer is processing and printing a job.

White light at the center of the bar

The printer is in sleep mode.

Solid amber light on the bar

A door is open. The printer doors might not be closed properly. Verify that the cartridge access door and rear access door are properly closed.

Solid amber light on the bar and the Paper light blinks

The printer might be out of paper or paper is not loaded properly, or there is a paper jam. Load paper, and then press the Resume button to continue or clear the paper jam. For more information on paper jam, go to Paper Jam Error.

Solid amber light on the bar and the paper light is blinking

Solid amber light on the bar and the Information button flashes or stays on

The HP Smart app or Information Report displays Printer setup incomplete or Check Your Account or Printer cannot print.

Go to Unable to Set Up Printer or Printer Stops Printing.

Solid amber light on the bar and the Cartridge light blinks

If the Cartridge light

blinks, the cartridge might be very low or there is a cartridge error, such as incompatible, unauthorized, or protected cartridge. Replace the toner cartridge. For more information, go to Replacing the Toner Cartridge.

Solid amber light on the bar and the cartridge light is blinking

Amber light flashes fast on the bar

The printer has encountered a problem. Turn off the printer, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn on the printer. If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

Solid light blue on the bar

The printer is idle and connected to a Wi-Fi network. A computer or mobile device is directly connected to the printer using Wi-Fi Direct. You do not need to take any action.

The bar pulses light blue

The printer is trying to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Wait for the printer to connect to the network, or for the light condition to change.

The bar pulses solid blue light and then flashes amber

The printer is unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Check the connection.

Solid green light on the bar

The printer is initializing, waiting for confirmation, performing automatic cleaning routines, downloading and installing a printer update, or cooling down.

note:
The print job might pause during cooling down, and will continue when the printer is ready. This might take several minutes.

Green light pulses on the bar

The printer is performing routine maintenance. You do not need to take any action.

Purple light pulses on the bar

The printer is in Wi-Fi setup mode. If the Information

button blinks, press the button to connect to the Wi-Fi.

The bar blinks solid purple light fast and then flashes amber

Time has expired to make a Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) mode connection. Press the Cancel button

to clear the error.

Attention light status (M233sdn, M233sdw, M234sdwe, M234sdw, M234sdne, M234sdn, M236d, M236sdn, and M236sdw)

Find the Attention light status, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Attention light is on and paper light blinks

Attention light is on and cartridge light blinks

The cartridge toner level is low. Replace the toner cartridge, for more information, go to Replacing the Toner Cartridge.

Attention light blinks

The printer doors might not be closed properly. Verify that the cartridge access door and rear access door are properly closed.

Attention light is off and cartridge light is on

The cartridge toner level is low. Consider having a replacement cartridge available to install when print quality is no longer acceptable.
