HP LaserJet Pro 400 Printer M401 - Setting up the printer (hardware) (dn and dw models)

note:
This document is for the HP LaserJet Pro 400 model M401nw.
This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer.
If you have already set up the product hardware and you need software installation help, see Links to software installation instructions at the end of this document.
This document includes the following steps to set up the product:

Unpack the product

  1. Before you unpack the product, select a site to place the product that meets the following specifications:
    • A sturdy work surface, well-ventilated area, and away from direct sunlight
    • Temperature range: 17° - 25° C (62.6° - 77° F)
    • Humidity range: 30% - 70%
      caution:
    The product weighs 10.6 kg (23.4 lb). HP recommends two people move the product.
  2. Take the HP product out of the box, and then remove the packaging material. Verify that the contents match this illustration.
    note:
    HP recommends recycling packing materials whenever possible.

  3. Open the front door, and then remove the packing materials from the inside the product.

  4. Remove the toner cartridge.

  5. Locate the orange ring on the toner cartridge. Carefully pull on the ring to remove the cartridge sealing tape.

  6. Reinstall the toner cartridge, and then close the front door.

  7. Remove the orange shipping tape and protective sheet on the touchscreen control panel.

Load paper

  1. Open Tray 2.

  2. Adjust the sliding front and side paper guides to the outside of the tray.

  3. Place the paper in the tray, and then slide the sliding front and side paper guides snug against the paper stack.

  4. Close the tray.

Connect the network cable (optional)

If you are connecting to a network, connect the network cable now. If not, skip this step and go to Connect power cable and turn on the product.
  caution:
Do not connect a USB cable now. If you plan to use a USB cable to connect the product to the computer, it will be connected during the software installation.

Connect power cable and turn on the product

  1. Connect the power cable between the product and a grounded AC outlet. To prevent damage to the product, use only the power cable that is provided with the product.

      caution:
    Make sure your power source is adequate for the product voltage rating. The voltage rating is on the product label. The product uses either 100-127 Vac or 220-240 Vac and 50/60 Hz.
  2. Turn the product power on.

  3. Wait for 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, if you connected the product to a network, the network recognizes the product and assigns an IP address or host name for the product.
  4. When the Home screen appears, touch the Setup button and then select System Setup menu to configure the Language setting.
    note:
    After you install the software, more advanced setup is available by using the HP Device Toolbox (see your user guide for more information).

  5. To verify that your product prints, do the following:
    1. Touch the Setup button on the control panel.
    2. Touch the Reports menu on the control panel.
    3. Touch the Configuration Report item on the control panel to print the product configuration and Jetdirect pages.
    If you connected the product to a network, find the IP address on the Jetdirect page.
    note:
    If you plan to use the product on a network, save these pages. The Jetdirect page contains the product IP address.
    • IPv4: If the IP address is 0.0.0.0, or 192.0.0.192, or 169.254.x.x, you must manually configure the IP address. Otherwise, the network configuration was successful.
    • IPv6: If the IP address begins with "fe80:", the product should be able to print. If not, you must manually configure the IP address.

  6. If the product will be connected with a USB cable, the software installation process requires that the product is turned on and in the Ready state. Configure the following setting so the product wakes from Sleep mode during the software installation process:
    note:
    Do not connect a USB cable now.
    1. Touch the Setup button on the control panel.
    2. Touch the System Setup item to open the menu.
    3. Touch the Energy Settings item.
    4. Touch the Sleep Delay item.
    5. Touch the Off item.

Update the firmware (optional but recommended)

HP regularly updates features that are available in the product firmware. Update the product firmware to take advantage of the most current features.
note:
Check with your network administrator before updating the product firmware.

After you complete the previous setup steps, you can install the printer software using the printer CD or by downloading the software from the HP Web site.
  caution:
Do not connect a USB cable now. If you plan to use a USB cable to connect the product to the computer, it will be connected during the software installation.
