HP Scanjet Enterprise 8500 fn1 Document Capture Workstation - Upgrading between different versions of 11.3 Firmware may result in a 49.38.07 error when paper is loaded in the ADF

This issue will only occur on devices upgrading from one version of 11.3 firmware to another. Since this is the initial release for the Scanjet 8500 this problem could apply to any firmware older than the current release.

1. Perform a backup first so the configuration data does not have to be reentered. Do a backup to a thumb drive from the Device Maintenance icon on the control panel. This is a two-step process:
   1. First perform a Backup Now, then Export Last Backup to write it to the thumb drive.
   2. The other option is to backup to a shared folder from the EWS General tab. Enter the encryption key; for example use 7. This will be needed again when restoring.

   Do not change passwords or anything in the pre-boot menu or the device may be unrecoverable.

2. Copy the firmware to a thumb drive.
3. Perform a backup (if not performed already).
4. Shut down the scanner.
5. Plug the thumb drive into the USB port on the right side of the control panel.
6. Turn on the scanner, and break into the pre-boot menu by pressing Esc when the three LEDs blink at the same time (or just keep tapping Esc as it starts to boot as well. The time “window” after the hp logo goes away.)
7. Select Administrator.
8. Select Clean Disk. This will reinitialize the scanner disk.
9. Scroll up to Download and press Enter.
10. Scroll down to USB Thumbdrive and press Enter.
11. The display will show the firmware it found on the thumbdrive. Press Enter and it will install the firmware.
12. After the scanner boots up, do a Restore to get the configuration back.
