HP printers - Cannot find the advanced features in the HP Smart app

After setting up your printer, the advanced scanning features cannot be found in the HP Smart app, such as Text Extract, Scribble, Book, Multi-Item, and ID Card.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Make sure your printing environment meets requirements

Review the following HP Smart Advance requirements to make sure your printer and device support it:

  • An HP printer (HP Smart Advanced requires an HP+ or eligible printer)

  • An HP Smart account

  • A computer or mobile device with:

    • Windows 10 Redstone 5 (version 1809) or later

    • macOS Big Sur (11.0) or later

    • Android Pie (9.0) or later

    • Apple iOS, iPadOS 15 or later

Sign in to your HP Smart account

You need to be signed in to your HP Smart account to use the HP Smart Advance features, such advanced scanning and Print Anywhere.

  1. Make sure your computer or mobile device is connected to the internet.

  2. Open the HP Smart app, and then signed in to your account.

    • If the advanced features are available, you are done.

    • If the advanced features are still missing, continue with these steps.

Update the HP Smart app

From your app store, check for and update the HP Smart app to the latest version, which can fix setup or connection issues.

  1. Open the HP Smart app in your app store.

  2. Click Update to get the last HP Smart version.

    If only Open displays, the app is up to date. Continue troubleshooting.

Remove your printer from the HP Smart app

Remove the printer from the HP Smart app to help fix any app connectivity issues.

Note:

Removing your printer from the HP Smart app does not remove the printer from your HP Smart account or cancel your Instant Ink subscription (if enrolled).

  1. Open the HP Smart app, and then right-click or long-press the image of your printer.

  2. Click Hide Printer.

  3. When prompted, click Hide Printer again to confirm removal.

    The printer no longer displays on the app home screen.

Remove the printer from Printers & Scanners (Windows, Mac)

Use the Printers & Scanners menu to remove the printer from a Windows computer or Mac.

  • Windows: Search for and open Printers & Scanners, select your printer in the list, and then click Remove device > Yes to complete the removal.

  • macOS: Click the Spotlight icon , and then search for and open Printers & Scanners. Select your printer name, click Remove Printer or the Remove button , and then click Remove Printer or Delete Printer when prompted to complete the removal.

Uninstall the HP Smart app

Remove the HP Smart app from your computer or mobile device.

  • Android: Open the Google Play Store, tap the Menu icon , and then tap My apps & games > HP Smart > Uninstall.

  • iOS: On the home screen, tap and hold the app, and then tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete.

  • Windows: Search for and open Add or remove programs. In the list of installed programs, click HP Smart > Uninstall.

  • macOS: Click the Spotlight icon , and then search for and open the Applications folder. Click and drag HP Smart to the Trash icon in the Dock.

    HP Smart is removed from the computer without the application files.

    Remove HP Smart along with the application files:

    1. Click Go from the top menu, and then click Go to Folder.

    2. Type ~/Library, and then press enter.

    3. Go to Containers, locate HP Smart or com.hp.SmartMac folder, and then remove the folder.

Restore printer factory defaults

Restore your printer to the default factory settings using the HP Smart app or internet browser to open the printer Embedded Web Server (EWS). Restoring factory defaults can help resolve printer setup issues, connectivity problems, and error messages.

  1. Choose one of the following methods to open the advanced settings for your printer.

    • HP Smart app: Click the image of your printer to open the settings and management tools, and then click Advanced Settings under Settings.

    • Printer EWS: Open the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS) using the printer IP address.

  2. From the EWS home page, click the Settings or System tab.

  3. If you are prompted to log in or enter the printer PIN, enter admin for the username (HP LaserJets only), enter the PIN from the printer label, and then click Submit or OK. This label is typically located inside the cartridge access area or printer door.

  4. Restore your printer to factory defaults.

    • For most HP printers, click Restore Factory Defaults or Factory under Restore Defaults. Click Restore Factory Defaults > Yes.

    • For HP LaserJet printers, click Service, and then click Restore defaults > OK.

    After about 20 seconds, your printer automatically restarts.

  5. Reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network, if necessary.

  6. Check for any printer firmware updates.

Set up the printer using the HP Smart app

Set up your printer using the HP Smart app.

  1. Open the HP Smart app.

  2. From the app home screen, click Add Printer or the Add printer icon ( or ).

  3. For mobile devices, tap Get Started under Set up a new printer. If prompted to select a connection type, click WiFi or Ethernet Cable, and then tap Continue. Prepare the printer for the connection, and then tap Continue.

  4. Find your printer in the list, click the printer name or Set Up, and then follow the prompts to finish the setup. It might take a few minutes before the printer displays.
