HP Designjet 1000 Series Printers - Installing and Uninstalling Ink Systems

Ink cartridge removal

note:
Only remove the ink cartridges if ink is low and you have been prompted to do so by the front panel display. The front panel will display which color ink cartridge needs replacing.
  1. Using the Arrow keys on the front panel, select the Ink System menu.
  2. Scroll to replace ink cartridge and press Enter.
  3. Remove the corresponding color ink cartridge by pushing the recess in the cartridge in and up. This will release the cartridge.

  4. Pull the ink cartridge out horizontally. Avoid touching the rear end of the cartridge, where there may be a slight release of ink.

Ink cartridge installation

note:
The following procedure assumes that the printer is turned on.
  1. Remove the ink cartridge from its packing, making sure the color label matches the color ink cartridge you are replacing.
  2. Hold the ink cartridge so that the colored label is at the top and facing you. The "Hewlett-Packard" logo should be at the bottom of the ink cartridge.
  3. The front panel should display "insert", for the corresponding ink cartridge that is removed. Insert the ink cartridge into the cartridge station slot labeled with the same color.
  4. Slide it in until you feel some resistance, then press firmly with one finger, inwards and downwards using the recess on the front of the ink cartridge, until it clicks into place.

  5. Continue following the instructions displayed on the front panel.
    note:
    If you have difficulty inserting the ink cartridge, do not try to force it in. Check again that the color of the ink cartridge matches the color of the slot, and that the colored label is at the top of the ink cartridge and the Hewlett-Packard logo is at the bottom. The ink cartridge is designed to prevent incorrect installation.

Printhead removal

note:
The following procedure assumes that the printer is turned on.
  1. Using the Up or Down arrow key, select the Ink System Icon on the front panel and press Enter.

  2. Scroll to Replace printhead(s) option and press Enter.
    note:
    Allow the printer time to access the printheads.
  3. Lift the window up and locate the printhead carriage.
  4. Pull down the latch on top of the carriage.

  5. Lift up the cover. This will now give you access to the printheads.
  6. Lift up the blue handle.
  7. Pull the printhead upward to remove it from the carriage.

Printhead installation

  1. Remove the blue protective cap and the colored protective tape from the printhead’s nozzles.
  2. The front panel should display an "insert" message for the corresponding printhead that is removed. Insert the new printhead into the correct slot, and then push down. The printhead status should change from "insert" to "ok" on the front panel display.
    note:
    Each slot in the printhead carriage has a colored label, which must match the colored label on the new printhead.
  3. When installing the new printhead there may be some resistance, if so, press it down firmly.
      caution:
    The printheads are designed to prevent incorrect installation (i.e. wrong slot, backwards, etc). If the printhead will not install into a specific slot, verify the color matches the slot color and that the printhead is correctly positioned.

  4. After replacing one or more of the printheads, close the printhead cover and use the latch to lock the cover in place.
  5. Now close the window.

Printhead cleaner removal

The printhead cleaners are located behind the door on the right side of the printer (below the front panel).
  1. The printer will prompt to "Open right door to access printhead cleaners".
  2. Open the right door.
      caution:
    When removing the printhead cleaners be careful not to get ink on your hands; there may be ink on and around the printhead cleaner. Do not lay it on its side, as there is ink on the inside.
  3. Each printhead cleaner has a handle on the front. To remove, push the handle in and then up.

  4. Lift the cleaner up and slide it out horizontally.

Printhead cleaner installation

  1. Insert each printhead cleaner into the correct color slot.

  2. When the printhead cleaner is all the way in, press inward and down until it clicks into place.
  3. When all four printhead cleaners have been installed, close the printhead cleaner door.
If paper is not loaded, the front panel will instruct you to load the paper, then the printer will run the printhead alignment check. When the printhead alignment check is successfully completed, the front panel will indicate the printer is ready for printing.
