This document describes how to update HP Jetdirect firmware. Similar to service packs for operating systems, HP provides firmware updates for printers, MFPs, and JetDirect Print Servers to help address any known issues and add new features throughout the support life of the printer. To make sure the JetDirect Print Server is up to date, HP recommends updating the firmware.

note:
The recommended method for upgrading the embedded Jetdirect Inside firmware is to use the printer RFU. See the printer documentation for assistance, or download the printer firmware package at www.hp.com/support.

Overview

There are several supported methods to perform a firmware update on a Jetdirect Print Server depending on whether you are updating a single print server or multiple print servers at one time.

This document provides instructions on how to update the Jetdirect Print Server firmware for a single Enterprise printer when the printer is in a ready state using either the Jetdirect EWS or FTP.

For instructions on how to update the firmware for multiple Jetdirect Print Servers at one time, go to Update Firmware for multiple HP Jetdirect Print Servers using HP Download Manager or Web Jetadmin.

To update the firmware, download the Jetdirect firmware file images to a computer using the links provided in this document, and then use only one of these methods, Jetdirect EWS or FTP.

In most circumstances, the Jetdirect Embedded Web Server (EWS) method is used to update a single print server.

If the print server is on a network that does not have Internet access, you can use a laptop with internet access to download the firmware file (from the links provided in this document), and then take the laptop to the network where the print servers are located to perform the firmware update.

note:
A few HP Jetdirect models cannot be updated. In this document, only those HP Jetdirect print servers that can be updated are listed. If an HP Jetdirect model is not listed below, it is because it cannot be updated.

What you need to know

Before performing a firmware update, review these requirements:

Image file downloads for HP Jetdirect Print Server Firmware are embedded on this page. Use Ctrl+F to find your JetDirect model below.
A firmware update can require 5 to 10 minutes or more to complete depending on the speed of the computer and the connection speed and type to the printer network, and any print jobs pending in the printer queue.
For print servers on a network without internet access, you must first download the firmware files individually from this document onto a computer WITH internet access, and then take the laptop to the network where the print servers are located.
Access to some menus on the control panel might require administrator privileges or a passcode.

Step one: Print a Configuration page

To obtain the IP address and determine the JetDirect Print Server model number currently in use with the printer, make sure the printer is in a ready state, and then print a configuration page.

note:
If the printer is in an error state, resolve the error first.

Make sure the printer is in a ready state.

note:
A 'ready' state is indicated either when 'Ready' displays on the control panel, or after the printer finishes initializing and all lights illuminate solid.
Use one of the following methods to print a Configuration Page.
- From the TEST button of an external Jetdirect.
- From the Home screen on the printer control panel.
- From the Jetdirect Embedded Web Server (EWS).
On the printed Configuration Page, look in the "Device Information" section for the JetDirect Print Server model number similar to the following example:
- J6044A - model number typically starts with a 'J' followed by 4 numbers, and then ending with a letter such as 'A'.

Step two: Download the Jetdirect firmware

Make sure the printer(s) is in a ready state and connected via a network.
Press Ctrl+F, paste or type your Jetdirect model number, and press Enter to find your JetDirect model in JetDirect Firmware Downloads section below.
Right-click the .dld file name in the links below, select Save Target as or Save as.
From the Save in: drop-down, select a location such as your desktop where you can easily locate the file.
In the "Save as Type" drop-down, select All Files, select .dld, and then click Save.

note:
Your browser may default to save the .dld file as a text file. If it saves the file as a .txt, you can rename the file by replacing the .txt file extension with .dld.

Step three: Update the firmware

Use only one of the following methods to update the firmware of a single print server. If the printer is in an error state, resolve the error first.

When using the FTP methods, consider the following security conditions before continuing:

The FTP download process checks if the file is valid.
If Telnet is disabled, an FTP download is not allowed.
If Telnet is enabled and an administrator password is set, the administrator password must be entered at the password prompt, to gain access to FTP download capability. The username prompt can be left blank, or use one of four valid usernames: root, admin, administrator, or supervisor.
Entering a password is not necessary to print (which preserves backward compatibility), and printing is not affected if the password is set.

Method one: Jetdirect Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Some HP Jetdirect models, depending on their firmware version, can use the HP Jetdirect Embedded Web Server (EWS) to update the firmware remotely for a single printer - no extra software required. These steps should only be used if the printer is able to boot to READY.

note:
An internet or local network connection is required to update the HP Jetdirect firmware using this method. The Jetdirect firmware must be greater than x.24.00 to have this feature available.

Make sure the printer is connected to the local network.
Turn the printer On, and then wait until it arrives at a Ready state.

note:
If there is an error message displayed on the control panel, resolve the error first.
Open a Web browser, and in the address field, type the IP address exactly as it appears on the Configuration Page, and then press Enter.

The Embedded Web Server (EWS) opens.
Click the Networking tab.
Click Other Settings and then click Firmware Upgrade.
Click Browse and select the firmware file you downloaded previously.

note:
Do not close the browser window until the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) displays the confirmation page.
Click Upgrade Firmware.

When the update is complete, a status message displays and the HP Jetdirect card automatically restarts.

note:
As the Jetdirect card restarts, the Web browser might appear stalled until the HP Jetdirect card is back on the network.

Method two: FTP using an Internet browser

Make sure the printer is connected to the local network.
Turn the printer On, and then wait until it arrives at a Ready state.

note:
If there is an error message displayed on the control panel, resolve the error first.
Open the FTP site for the print server.
1. Open a Web browser.
2. In the URL address field in place of http://, type https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx /DOWNLOAD replacing 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' with the actual IP address of the HP printer/Jetdirect, and then press Enter.
  
  note:
  Be sure to include a space between the last character of the IP address and /DOWNLOAD.
Within the FTP site, from the Page Arrow Down, select Open the ftp site in Windows Explorer or a file manager window.
Navigate to the file you downloaded previously, and then copy and paste (or drag and drop) the file from Windows Explorer or the file manager window into the FTP window.
If you receive an error message, click OK to ignore it. This indicates that the new firmware update is complete but only available in English.
Repeat the steps above to update the firmware a second time.

note:
If the second update is not performed, the HP Jetdirect print server will have only English and no other languages for the management interfaces (print control panel menus, embedded Web server, as well as the configuration page). To obtain all available languages, update the firmware a second time.
Close the FTP.

Method three: FTP using a DOS prompt

Some HP Jetdirect models, depending on their firmware version, can use the FTP method to update the firmware remotely for a single printer - no extra software required. These steps should only be used if the printer is able to boot to READY.

Make sure the printer is connected to the local network or internet.
Turn the printer On, and then wait until it arrives at a Ready state.

note:
If there is an error message displayed on the control panel, resolve the error first.
Type the following commands.
1. Type ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx replacing 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' with the actual IP address of the HP printer/Jetdirect, and then press Enter.
  
  note:
  Be sure to include a space between ftp and the first character of the IP address.
2. At the prompt for a user name/account, press Enter.
  
  note:
  The HP Jetdirect print server will accept all passwords or blanks for the username, so in most cases just press Enter.
3. At the Password prompt, press Enter.
  
  note:
  If Telnet is enabled and an administrator password is set, the administrator password must be entered at the password prompt.
4. At the ftp prompt, type bin and press Enter.
5. Type hash and press Enter.
  
  note:
  This command is optional – it shows a display of the download progress and can be useful if the download takes a few minutes.
6. Type cd DOWNLOAD and press Enter.
7. Type put c:\filename.dld and press Enter.
  
  note:
  "filename.dld" is the firmware image file. Be sure to type in the full path to the file and be sure to type the filename correctly. For this reason it is easiest to make sure the .dld file is at the root directory. This command is case-sensitive.
Wait a couple of minutes. The firmware update is complete when the message, "Transfer complete" is displayed.
If you receive the message "Netout: Software caused connection abort", repeat the steps above to update the firmware a second time.

note:
If the second update is not performed, the HP Jetdirect print server will have only English and no other languages for the management interfaces (print control panel menus, embedded Web server, as well as the configuration page). To obtain all available languages, update the firmware again.
Type bye and press Enter to close the FTP.
