HP Smart Tank 580, 590, 5100 Printers - First time printer setup

To set up your HP Smart Tank printer for the first time, remove the printer from the box, connect the power cord, install the printer software, connect your device to the printer, fill the tanks, install the printhead, load paper, and then align the printheads.

Note:

Remove the printer from the box

Remove the printer from the box, and then remove all tape, stickers, and packing materials.

  1. Remove the printer from the box.

  2. Place the printer on a level surface, where you intend to use it.

  3. Remove all tape from the outside of the printer.

  5. Open the front door, and then remove the tape and packing material from the ink access area.

  6. Open the scanner lid, and then remove the protective film from the scanner glass.

  8. Plug the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

  9. Wait until the printer is on and the Wi-Fi light blinks.

Add the printer to HP Smart

The HP Smart app is required and helps connect your device to your printer. It also guides you through the rest of the setup process.

  1. Go to 123.hp.com from your computer or mobile device to download and install the software.

  2. Open the HP Smart app.

    Note:

    HP Smart v140.1.307 and later for Windows, v14.0 and later for macOS, or v9.6.1 and later for Android or iOS is required. To check the HP Smart version, open HP Smart, go to Settings, and then About. If the version number is earlier than the specified version, update the operating system of your computer or mobile device, and then uninstall and reinstall the HP Smart app.

  3. If prompted, create or sign in to an HP account.

  4. Touch Add a New printer or touch the plus sign to find your printer.

    Note:

    If HP Smart fails to detect your printer, go to HP printer not found by the software or device during setup for troubleshooting.

  5. Follow the prompts in HP Smart to connect the printer to your network (2.4 GHz Wi-Fi supported) and device.

  6. View the animations to fill ink tanks, install printheads, load paper, and perform printhead alignment in HP Smart.

The steps that follow on this page can be used with the instructions in HP Smart to complete printer setup.

Fill the ink tanks

Fill the ink tanks with ink that came with your printer.

Be aware of the following when working with ink bottles:

  • Keep the ink bottles beyond the reach of children.

  • Open the ink bottle only when you are filling the ink tanks.

  • Store the ink bottles upright in a cool, dry place.

CAUTION:

To avoid possible printhead damage, do not install the printheads until you have filled the ink tanks.

  1. Open the front door.

  3. Twist open the ink bottle.

  4. Match the color of the ink bottle with the color of the ink tank. Hold the bottle on the tank nozzle, making sure the tip of the bottle fits properly over the nozzle, and let the ink drain into the tank until the tank is full.

    If the bottle does not start draining, remove it, and then reinsert it onto the tank. Do not squeeze the bottle.

    Note:

    Do not overfill the black ink tank, the black bottle will have some ink left.

  5. After the ink tank is filled, set the ink bottle upright, and then close the ink bottle lid.

  6. Close the ink tank cap.

  7. Repeat the previous steps to fill the other ink tanks.

    Note:

    All four ink tanks must be filled. The printer will not work if you fill only one tank.

  8. Close the front door, and then wait approximately 15 seconds for the printer to detect ink.

  9. Store bottles with leftover ink upright in a cool, dry place.

Install the printhead

Install the printheads that came with your printer.

The following must be completed before installing the printheads:

  • The printer is on.

  • All four ink tanks are filled.

  • You have closed the front door for approximately 15 seconds after filling the ink tanks.

  1. Open the front door, and then wait until the carriage moves to the center and stops.

    If the carriage does not move to the center, close the front door for 15 seconds and reopen.

  2. Remove the orange tape from the printhead cover.

  4. Remove and discard the orange guard.

    Note:

    Keep the guard upright to avoid ink leaks.

  5. Remove the printhead from its package.

  6. Pull the plug straight up from the top of the printhead.

  7. Remove the tape from the printhead contacts using the pull tabs.

    CAUTION:

    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzle. Do not replace the protective tape on the contact. Handling these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  8. Slide the printhead into its slot, and then gently push at a slight upward angle until it snaps into place.

Load paper and align the printheads

Load plain white paper into the input tray, and then align the printheads.

Use only unused plain white A4 size paper. Alignment might fail if reused paper is used.

  1. Raise the input tray.

  5. Open the output tray extender.

  6. When the Open Lid light blinks, open the scanner lid and place the printed page face-down.

  8. Press the blinking Copy button to scan the page.

    On the printer display, an A blinks during the scan and disappears when the printhead alignment is complete.
