Unexpected error during HP Easy Start printer setup (Windows)

While using HP Easy Start to set up the printer in Windows, a There was an unexpected error and we cannot complete printer setup now message displays after attempting to connect it to a Wi-Fi network.

As a workaround, use the HP Smart app to connect and set up the printer.

  1. In Windows, click Exit Setup to close HP Easy Start, and then download the HP Smart app.

    Note:

    Disconnect from a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection before downloading.

    • Windows (except 7): On your computer, go to HP Smart - Microsoft Store (in English) to download the app.

    • Windows 7: On an Android or iOS device, go to123.hp.com to download the app.

  2. Open the HP Smart app, and then sign in to or create an HP Smart account. An account is required to access all printer functions.

  3. On the home screen, click Add Printer or the plus sign icon , and then wait for the app to find your printer.

    • Windows (except 7): If app finds the printer, select it, and then follow the prompts to complete the setup. Your printer is ready to use.

    • Windows 7: If the app finds the printer, select it, and then complete the printer setup on your mobile device. On your computer, re-open HP Easy Start to complete the printer setup in Windows.

    • All Windows: If the printer is not found, continue with these steps.

  4. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode.

    • Most printers with a touchscreen display or menu: Open the Wireless or Setup menu, select Network setup or Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.

    • Printers without a touchscreen display or menu: Go to Restore Wi-Fi setup mode on your HP printer to restore default settings by pressing the buttons on your printer.

  5. Within 2 hours, use the HP Smart app to set up the printer.

  6. For Windows 7, re-open HP Easy Start on your computer, and then set up the printer.
