HP DeskJet, ENVY 6000, 6400 printers - First time printer setup

Remove the printer from the box, and then remove all tape, stickers, and packing materials.

1. Remove the printer and power cord from the box.

2. Remove all tape from the outside of the printer.

   

3. Lift the ink cartridge access door by using the recessed areas on the sides of the printer until it locks into place.

   

4. Remove the cardboard from the print area.

5. Lower the ink cartridge access door, and then press gently to lock it into place.

   

6. Recycle all packing materials.

Plug the printer into an electrical outlet, the printer turns on automatically.

1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

   

   The printer turns on automatically.

2. If the printer does not turn on automatically, press the Power button.

The HP Smart app is required and helps connect your device to your printer. It also guides you through the rest of the setup process.

1. Go to 123.hp.com to download and install the software.

   Note:

   If HP Smart fails to install on your device, go to Unable to download and install the HP Smart printer app for troubleshooting.

2. Open the app, and then touch Add a New printer or touch the plus sign to find your printer.

3. Follow the prompts in HP Smart to connect the printer to your network and device.

4. Sign up for HP+ or Instant Ink.

   Note:

   This is optional and depends on country/region.

5. Follow the animation in the HP Smart app to load paper, install setup cartridges, and align printheads.

Load plain U.S. letter or A4 size paper into the input tray.

1. Open the input tray.

   

2. Slide the paper-width guides to the edges of the input tray.

   

3. Insert a stack of plain white paper into the input tray.

   

4. Slide the paper-width guides in until they touch the edges of the paper.

   Note:

   The stack of paper should slide easily against the guides.

   

5. Close the input tray.

   

Install the HP ink cartridges that came with your printer.

1. Lift the ink cartridge access door by using the recessed areas on the sides of the printer until it locks into place.

   

   The carriage moves slightly to the left.

2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

3. Remove an ink cartridge from its package. Be careful to touch only the black plastic on the ink cartridge.

   

4. Remove the plastic tape from the ink cartridge, and then discard or Recycle the package and tape.

   CAUTION:

   Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles, or reapply the protective tape. Touching these areas can result in an ink system failure.

   

5. With the nozzles toward the printer, insert the ink cartridge into its slot, and then close the ink lid until the ink snaps into place.

   Note:

   Install the color ink cartridge on the left and the black ink cartridge on the right.

   

6. Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridge.

7. Lower the ink cartridge access door, and then press gently to lock it into place.

   Note:

   If you have not done printer alignment during app or software installation, the printer automatically prints the alignment page after 3 pages are printed. Follow the instructions on the printer alignment page to complete alignment.

The printer automatically prints an Alignment Page after paper is loaded and setup cartridges are installed. Follow the instructions on the printer Alignment Page to complete alignment.

1. Open the scanner lid.

2. Place the Alignment Page with the print-side down on the scanner glass, and then align the page with the indicated corner.

3. Close the scanner lid.

4. Press the blinking Copy button on the printer control panel to scan the page.
