Remove and Replace the Motherboard for Sprout by HP

This document applies to Sprout by HP.
Sprout by HP

Before you begin

  • You need a Phillips head screwdriver.
  • You need thermal grease or pads and a cleaner to clean the thermal grease from the parts.
  • You need a flat tool or stick to spread the thermal grease.
  • You need an Intel CPU removal/replacement tool.
  • Remove all CDs and DVDs from the optical drive.
  • Turn off the computer, and disconnect all cables. Be sure to disconnect the network cable before disconnecting the power cord.
  • Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
  • Place the computer face-down on a soft flatsurface. HP recommends that you place the Sprout ona blanket, towel, or other soft cloth toprotect the touch screen surface fromscratches or other damage.
  • Do not remove a component from the protective packaging until you are ready to install it.

Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.

This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Remove the motherboard

To remove the motherboard, first you remove the touchmat, the right and left rear covers, the column assembly, the bottom rear cover, the motherboard EMI shield, the wireless LAN board, the system memory, the thermal module, and the CPU using the following instructions:
Step 1
Remove the parts to access the motherboard EMI shield and remove the motherboard EMI shield.

Remove the wireless LAN board.

Remove the system memory.

Install a socket cover on the load plate window after removing the CPU...

...and lower the load plate over the socket and lock it into place.

Detach all system connectors to the motherboard.

Remove the eleven silver torx head screws securing the motherboard to the middle frame.

Lift the motherboard off of the computer. Carefully lift with enough force to release the motherboard from the adhesive thermal pads.

Place the motherboard in an antistatic bag.

Replace the motherboard

Use the following steps to replace the motherboard:
Step 1
To replace the motherboard, first make sure all thermal pads are correctly placed on the middle frame under the motherboard.

Align the screw holes on the motherboard with the standoffs on the computer, clearing any connectors away from the side of the board.

Replace the eleven silver torx head screws to secure the motherboard to the middle frame.

Reattach all system connectors to the board.

Replace the CPU.
