HP Scanjet Flatbed Scanners - Clean the scanning glass and the scanning strips

Introduction

The scanning glass is used to scan fragile documents.On the left of the scanning glass is a scanning strip. It is usedwhen scanning a document through the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).Scanning strips are also located in the ADF duplex background slotand unit.
This document provides instructions to clean thescanning glass and the scanning strips on an HP Scanjet Flatbed Scanner.It is recommended to clean these components periodically or any timea scanned image has streaks.
The procedure in this document might vary dependingon the type of Flatbed scanner but the steps applies to most ScanjetFlatbed scanners. The following are the list of HP Scanjet Flatbedscanners:

Overview

The cleaning procedure consists of the followingsteps:
The following scanners do not have an ADF duplexbackground unit:
  • HP Scanjet 5590 Digital Flatbed Scannerseries
  • HP Scanjet 8270 Document Flatbed Scanner
  • HP Scanjet N6310 Document Flatbed Scanner
  • HP Scanjet N6350 Networked DocumentFlatbed Scanner
  • HP Scanjet N8420 Document Flatbed Scanner
  • HP Scanjet N8460 Document Flatbed Scanner
  • HP Scanjet N9120 Flatbed Scanner
  • HP Scanjet Enterprise Flow N9120 FlatbedScanner

Step 1: Required items before cleaning

Make sure to have the following items before cleaning:
  • Clean lint-free cloths
  • Clean warm water
  • Liquid glass cleaner
Use a glass cleaner to clean only the scanningglass and the scanning strip.
  caution:
Avoid cleaners that contain abrasives,acetone, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride, as these chemicals candamage the scanning glass.
Avoid isoprophyl alcohol as it leaves streaks on the scanning glass.

Step 2: Clean the scanning glass

Follow these steps to clean the scanning glassand the scanning strips:
  1. Turn off the scanner.
  2. Lift the flatbed scanner lid.
  3. Use a clean, lint-free clothslightly moistened with warm water or spray a glass cleaner on a clean,lint-free cloth. Make sure to squeeze the cloth to remove excess wateron the cloth.
      caution:
    Do not spray the glass cleaner directlyto the scanning glass or the scanning strips as it will damage thescanner.
  4. Wipe the scanning glass, andthen wipe the scanning strip with the slightly moistened clean, lint-freecloth.
    note:
    If the scanner does not have a scanningstrip or a calibration strip, clean only the scanning glass.
  5. Wipe the calibration strip locatedopposite the scanning strip with the moistened clean, lint-free cloth.

  6. Use a dry clean, lint-free clothto wipe the scanning glass, scanning strip, and the calibration strip.
    note:
    Make sure to wait for the scanning glassand the scanning strips to dry completely.
  7. Close the flatbed scanner lid.

Step 3: Clean the scanning strips in theADF duplex background unit

note:
This step is not applicable for scannersthat do not have an ADF duplex background unit.
Follow these steps to clean the scanning stripsin the ADF duplex background unit:
  1. Lift up the ADF input tray inan upright position to locate the ADF duplex background unit.

  2. Press in on the ADF duplex backgroundtabs, and then slide the ADF duplex background unit forward to removeit from its slot. Set the ADF duplex background unit aside on a cleansurface.
    note:
    Make sure not to touch the rollers whenhandling the ADF duplex background unit.

  3. Locate the scanning strip insidethe ADF duplex background unit slot.
  4. Use a clean, lint-free clothslightly moistened with warm water or spray the glass cleaner on aclean, lint-free cloth.
    note:
    Do not spray the glass cleaner directlyto the scanning strips.
  5. Wipe the scanning strip on theADF duplex background unit and keep it on a clean surface.
  6. Wipe the scanning strip insidethe ADF duplex background unit slot. Make sure not to use the glasscleaner on the rollers.
  7. Use a dry clean, lint-free clothto wipe the scanning glass inside the ADF duplex background unit slotand the ADF duplex background unit.
    note:
    Make sure to wait for the scanning stripsto dry completely.

  8. Slide the ADF duplex backgroundunit into its slot until both the tabs clicks into place.
  9. Pull down the ADF input trayinto place.
  10. Turn on the scanner.
The scanner is ready to use.
