HP LaserJet – Unable to scan when the cartridge status is 'Low' or 'Very Low'

Learn how to scan when the supplies status is low or very low.

Issue

Unable to scan when a Low, Very Low, or Out message displays on the control panel or in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) of an older HP LaserJet printer.

Cartridge status descriptions

When the printer toner cartridge level is low or very low, the actual toner cartridge life remaining may vary. Use the following descriptions as a guide.

Cartridge is low - The toner cartridge does not need to be replaced now. Continue printing and scanning with the current cartridge until redistributing the toner no longer yields acceptable print quality. Consider having a replacement available to install when print quality is no longer acceptable.

Note:

To redistribute the toner, remove the toner cartridge from the printer and gently rock the cartridge back and forth about its horizontal axis, reinsert the toner cartridge into the printer, and then close the cover.

Cartridge is very low: HP’s Premium Protection Warranty on that toner cartridge has ended. The toner cartridge does not need to be replaced now unless the print quality is not acceptable. Cartridges can be re-ordered at any time, but the replacement should not be installed until after the existing cartridge is depleted.

Scan with a 'Low' or 'Very low' message

When a Low or Very Low message displays on the Supplies Status page, the user can continue to scan until the cartridge reaches it's end of life.

To dismiss the 'low' notifications until the cartridge is depleted, follow these steps.

Adjust the 'Very Low Setting' to continue scanning beyond the threshold

Note:

After installing a new toner cartridge, it is not necessary to re-configure these settings.

  1. On the printer control panel, press the OK button.

  2. Open the following menus:

    • System Setup

    • Supply Settings

    • Black Cartridge

  3. Select the Very Low Setting option.

  4. To display an alert when the cartridge is very low and to continue scanning beyond the Very Low setting without interaction, select Continue.

    Note:

This can result in unsatisfactory print quality.
