Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet 900 Printer Series

Blinking lights

The lights on the front of the product indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. Blinking lights can indicate error conditions. They might also indicate that the product is starting up or processing a print job.

Following are the different lights and buttons on the product control panel.

The following sections describe the most common issues related to the light patterns on your product. Find the issue related to the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Issue: All the lights are off

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

Cartridge light: Off
Resume light: Off
Power light: Off

Cause

The product is turned off.

Solutions

Use the following solutions to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Turn on the printer

Press the Power button (

) to turn the product on.

If the product does not turn on, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the printer is plugged in

Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the product and to the electrical outlet.

Check the rear of the product to make sure that the cord from the power adapter is securely connected to the product.
Check the power adapter to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.
Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.
Press the Power button () to turn the product on.
If the product does not turn on, follow the same steps and try a different wall outlet.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the printer

If you have completed all the previous steps and the issue persists, continue to the Service the printer section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power light is on

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

Cartridge light: Off
Resume light: Off
Power light: On

Cause

The product is ready to process a print job.

Solution

No action is necessary, as the product is ready to process a print job.

Issue: The Power light blinks

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

Cartridge light: Off
Resume light: Off
Power light: Blinking

Cause

The product is printing, or there might be a software issue.

Solutions

Try these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Wait for the print job to finish

If the product is currently processing a print job, wait for the print job to finish. If the product is not printing, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Turn the printer off and on again

Turn the product off, and then turn the product back on to resume printing.

Press the Power button () to turn the product off.
If the product will not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the outlet, and then connect it.
Press the Power button () to turn the product on.
Try to print again.

Issue: The Power light and the Resume light are on

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

Cartridge light: Off
Resume light: On
Power light: On

Cause

The rear access door or the duplexer is missing or unlocked.

Solution

Use one of the following methods to reattach either the rear access door or the duplexer. If you have a duplexer on your product, you will not have a rear access door.

Method one: Reattach the rear access door

Turn the knob on the rear access door counter-clockwise to release it.

Pull the door toward you to remove it.
Reattach the rear access door to the rear of the product.
Turn the knob clockwise to lock the door into place.

Method two: Reattach the duplexer

Press the buttons on each side of the duplexer to release it.

Remove the duplexer from the product.
Reattach the duplexer. Press the buttons on each side of the duplexer, and then gently push the duplexer back into the rear of the product until it snaps firmly into place.

Repeat the steps to reattach the duplexer if the lights remain on.

Issue: The Power light is on and the Resume light blinks

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:

Cartridge light: Off
Resume light: Blinking
Power light: On

Cause
There are several possible causes:
- The cover on the product is open.
- The product is out of paper.
- There is a paper jam.
- The carriage is stuck.

How do I resolve this issue? The following sections describe the most common messages that might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Resume light. To resolve the issue, find the message that displays on your computer (from the following choices), and then expand that section for solutions.

A 'Door Open' message might display on the computer

The Resume light blinks and a ‘Door Open’ message might display on the computer.

Cause

The cover on the product is open.

Solution

If the cover on the product is open, close it.
Press the Resume button () to continue printing.

An 'Out of Paper' message might display on the computer

The Resume light blinks and an ‘Out of paper’ message might display on the computer.

Cause

The product is out of paper.

Solution

Follow these steps to load paper in the product.

Insert the paper in the paper tray, and then align it squarely against the paper guide.
Adjust the paper width guide so that it fits snugly against the paper.
Press the Resume button () to continue the print job.

A 'Paper Jam' message might display on the computer

The Resume light blinks and a ‘Paper jam’ message might display on the computer.

Cause

There is a paper jam in the product.

Solutions

Solution one: Clear the paper jam

Follow these steps in the order presented clear any jammed paper.

Step one: Remove loose paper from the tray

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

atención:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage theprint mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the printer

Your product will have either a rear access door or a two-sided printing accessory (duplexer). Choose one of the following methods to clear the jam from the rear of the product.

Method one: Remove the rear access door

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Turn the knob on the rear access door counter-clockwise to release the door, and then pull the door toward you to remove it.

Gently pull out any jammed paper from the rear of the product.

Reattach the rear access door, and then turn the knob on the door clockwise to lock it into place.

Method two: Remove the duplexer

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press the buttons on each side of the duplexer, and then pull it toward you to remove it.

Gently remove any jammed paper from the rear of the product.

Reattach the duplexer to the rear of the product and, push it inward until it snaps firmly into place. (Do not press the buttons on the ends of the duplexer when you reattach it.)
Press the button on top of the duplexer, and then open the door.

Gently remove any jammed paper from inside the duplexer.
Close the duplexer door.

Step three: Clear the paper jam from the front of the printer

Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the rear of the product. If the power cord is not disconnected, disconnect it now.
Open the cover on the product.

Close the cover on the product.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

Step four: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cover on the product. The carriage might try to move into the access area. If so, allow the carriage to move to that position.

With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.

You must unplug the power cord to move the carriage by hand and reset the paper feed mechanism without risk of electrical shock.
Check for any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage, and then carefully remove any paper or objects that you find.

If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If pieces of paper remain in the product, more paper jams can occur.
Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product. Gently push the carriage to the left and then to the right.
Close the cover on the product.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Step five: Print a self-test report

Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Choose one of the following options to print a self-test report.

Option one: Print a self-test report from the control panel

Press and hold the Power button ().
While holding the Power button, press the Resume button () four times.
Release the Power button (). The self-test report prints.

Option two: Print a self-test report from HP Toolbox

Open the HP Toolbox:
- Windows XP
  
  Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product.
- Windows Vista
  
  Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product.
nota:
You can also open the HP product software from your computer desktop: double-click the icon for your HP product.
On the Printer Services tab, click Print a Test Page. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution two: Clean the paper rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Step one: Clean the paper rollers

Use one of the following methods to clean the paper rollers.

Method one: Remove the rear access door to clean the rollers

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Turn the knob on the rear access door counter-clockwise to release the door.
Remove the rear access door.

Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled or bottled water.
Wipe the rubber paper feed rollers with the damp cloth. Carefully rotate the rollers up to clean all the way around.

Allow the rollers to dry completely, and then reattach the rear access door.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the HP product does not turn on, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Method two: Remove the duplexer to clean the paper rollers

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press the buttons on each side of the duplexer, and then pull the duplexer toward you to remove it.

Solution three: Perform a power reset

Follow these steps to reset the product.

Step one: Perform a power reset

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
Turn the printer on.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

How to print a self-test report

Choose one of the following options to print a self-test report.

Option one: Print a self-test report from the control panel

Press and hold the Power button ().
While holding the Power button, press the Resume button () four times.
Release the Power button (). The self-test report prints.

A 'Carriage Jam' or 'Print carriage is stuck' message might display on the computer

The Resume light blinks and a ‘Carriage jam’ or ‘Print carriage is stuck’ message might display on the computer.

Cause

The carriage is stalled or jammed.

Solutions

Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Clear the paper jam

Jammed paper inside the product can cause the carriage to stall. Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper.

Step one: Remove loose paper from the tray

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage theprint mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the printer

Open the cover on the product. The carriage might try to move into the access area. If so, allow the carriage to move to that position.

Solution three: Remove and then reinstall the cartridges

Improper placement or installation of the cartridges can cause a carriage jam. Follow these steps to remove and then reinstall the cartridges.

Step one: Remove the cartridges

Follow these steps to remove the cartridges.

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cover on the product.

Open the cartridge latch, and then slide the cartridge out of its slot.

Repeat the previous steps to remove the other cartridge.
Look under and around the carriage, and then remove any obstructions.

Step two: Reinsert the cartridges

Follow these steps to reinsert cartridges.

Hold the cartridge with the HP logo facing up.
Slide the cartridge into its slot, and then press it toward the back of the product until it locks into place.

Close the cartridge latch.
Repeat the previous steps to insert the other cartridge.
Close the cover on the product.

Solution four: Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet

Follow these steps to make sure that the product is connected to a suitable power source.

Step one: Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from any power strip or surge protector, and then plug it directly into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

nota:
If the product prints when plugged directly into a wall outlet, the power strip or surge protector might not be allowing enough voltage to reach the product.

Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Choose one of the following options to print a self-test report.

Press and hold the Power button ().

If the paper will not feed, there might be a paper jam.

Solutions

Press the Resume button () to feed the paper.
Resume printing.

Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled or bottled water.

If your product does not have a duplexer, reattach the rear access door to the rear of the product. Turn the knob on the door clockwise to lock it into place.

Your product will have either a rear access door or a two-sided printing accessory (duplexer). Choose one of the following methods to clear the jam from the rear of the product.

The black cartridge is located in the right carriage slot.

Step one: Replace the cartridge

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cover on the product, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

Open the cartridge latch, and then slide the cartridge out of its slot.

Remove the new cartridge from its package, and then carefully remove the protective tape.

Ink nozzles (Do not touch)
nota:
Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Slide the cartridge into its slot, and then press it toward the back of the product until it locks into place.

Close the cartridge latch.
Close the cover on the product.

Step two: Align the cartridges

Follow these steps to align the cartridges.

Windows XP:
1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
2. Click the icon for your product, and then click File and Properties.
3. Click the Services tab, and then click Align to print an alignment page.
Windows Vista:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Printers.
3. Click the icon for your product, and then click File and Properties.
4. Click the Services tab, and then click Align to print an alignment page.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
