HP LaserJet Enterprise M652, M653 - Setting up the printer (hardware)

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the printer. Complete these steps before installing the printer software on the computer.
If the printer hardware is already set up, see the Links to software installation instructions section at the end of this document for help with software installation.
This document includes the following steps to set up the printer:

Step one: Unpack the printer

  1. Select a site to place the printer that meets the following specifications:
    • A sturdy work surface, well-ventilated area, and away from direct sunlight
    • Temperature range: 15° - 27° C (59° - 80.6° F)
    • Humidity range: 30% - 70%
Allow enough space around the printer to open all doors and trays.
    M652n and M652dn models:
      caution:
The M652n and M652dn models each weigh 31.4 kg (69.2 lb). HP recommends that two people move the printer.

  3. Remove all tape and packing material from the printer.
      caution:
Do not extend more than one paper tray at a time.
Do not use the paper tray as a step.
Keep hands out of the paper trays when closing.
All trays must be closed when moving the printer.

Step two: Insert the cartridges

  1. Open the front door on the printer.
  2. Remove the toner cartridge from its packaging by removing the plastic end caps, removing the cartridge from the plastic bag, and then removing the orange protective shield.
    note:
Do not touch the green imaging drum. Fingerprints on the imaging drum can cause print defects.
    note:
HP recommends recycling the packaging materials.

  3. Hold both ends of the toner cartridge and rock it 5-6 times.
Figure : Rock the toner cartridge
  4. Support the toner cartridge underneath with one hand while holding the cartridge handle with the other. Align the toner cartridge with its slot on the shelf, and then insert the toner cartridge into the printer.

  5. Repeat these steps for each toner cartridge.
  6. Close the front door.

Step three: Install Tray 3 (M653x models only)

note:
This step applies only to M653x models. For all other models, skip to Step three: Load Tray 2.
  1. Place the tray on a stable surface, and then place the printer on the tray. Use the alignment pins on top of the tray to position the printer.
      caution:
HP recommends that two people move the printer when installing Tray 3.
Figure : Align and place the printer onto the tray
  2. Remove the shipping tape from the tray, and then turn the tray locks clockwise to fasten the tray to the printer.
Figure : Remove the tape and fasten the tray

Step four: Load paper in Tray 2

note:
The steps for loading paper in Tray 3 are the same as the steps for loading paper in Tray 2.
  1. Open Tray 2 by pulling it out and lifting up slightly to remove it from the printer.
    Figure : Open the tray
  2. Adjust the paper-width guides by squeezing the blue adjustment latches and sliding the guides to the size of paper being used.

  3. Adjust the paper-length guide by squeezing the adjustment latch and sliding the guide to the size of paper being used.
Figure : Adjust the paper-length guide
  4. Load paper into the tray.
    note:
To prevent paper jams, adjust the paper guides to the correct size and do not overfill the tray. Be sure that the top of the stack is below the tray-full indicator.
Figure : Load paper in the tray
  5. Adjust the paper guides by grasping the adjustment latches and pressing inward. Check the paper to verify the guides lightly touch the stack, but do not bend it.

  6. Insert Tray 2 into the printer, and then close the tray.

Step five: Connect the network cable (optional)

If the printer is to be connected to a network, connect the network cable now. If not, skip this step and go to Step five: Connect the power cable and turn on the printer.
note:
A network cable is not included with the printer.
  caution:
Do not connect a USB cable now. To use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, connect it when prompted during software installation.

Step six: Connect the power cable and turn on the printer

  1. Connect the power cable between the printer and a grounded AC outlet. To prevent damage to the printer, use only the power cable that is provided with the printer.
    note:
Make sure the power source is adequate for the printer voltage rating. The voltage rating is on the printer label. The printer uses either 100-127 Vac or 220-240 Vac and 50/60 Hz.
Figure : Connect the power cable
  2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Figure : Turn on the printer
  3. Wait for 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, if the printer is connected to a network, the network recognizes the printer and assigns an IP address or host name to the printer.
  4. On the Initial Setup screen, set the language, the location, the date/time format, and other features.
    note:
For advanced setup for network-connected printers, enter the printer IP address in the address bar of a web browser after software installation is complete. To find the IP address on the printer control panel, select the Information icon, and then select the Network icon.

Step seven: Verify that the printer functions

To verify that the printer prints, complete the following steps:
  1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select Reports.
  2. Select Configuration/Status Pages.
  3. Select Configuration Page, and then select Print to print the configuration and Jetdirect pages.
If the printer is connected to a network, find the IP address on the Jetdirect page.
    • IPv4: If the IP address is 0.0.0.0, or 192.0.0.192, or 169.254.x.x, manually configure the IP address. Otherwise, the network configuration was successful.
    • IPv6: If the IP address begins with "fe80:", the printer should be able to print. If not, manually configure the IP address.
      Figure : Jetdirect page

Step eight: Update the firmware (optional but recommended)

HP regularly updates features that are available in the printer firmware. Update the printer firmware to take advantage of the most current features.
note:
Check with the network administrator before updating the printer firmware.
For information on updating the printer firmware, see Update firmware using a USB flash drive or the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
