HP LaserJet - Set up an older HP printer in mac OS X

For many older printers, the print drivers are only available from Apple Software Update.

Normally, drivers for a previously installed printer will be automatically downloaded and installed.

Follow these steps to update the driver for your printer in mac OS X.

Step one: Make sure the latest printer driver is installed

To upgrade the drivers for a previously installed printer, run Apple Software Update.

If the driver is not automatically installed by Apple Software Update, manually download the entire driver package from Apple Support.

Step two: Add the HP printer to the Printers & Scanners list

Add the HP printer driver to the Printers & Scanners list using a USB, wired network, or wireless network connection.

  1. Make sure that the printer is connected via USB, a wired network, or a wireless network.

  2. Open the Apple menu (Apple menu icon), and then click System Preferences.

  3. Click Printers & Scanners, and if the printer is already listed, select the printer name, and then click the Remove printer icon (Remove printer icon) at the bottom of the list to remove the printer.

  4. Click the Add printer icon (Add printer icon), and then click the name of the printer in the list.

    Note:

    Make sure that the printer Kind is "Bonjour," "Bonjour Multifunction," or "USB."

  5. In the Use drop-down list, select the driver for the HP printer to make it the default.

    Note:

    If the printer is compatible with AirPrint1, Secure AirPrint or AirPrint will be selected by default (10.9 and newer). To use the HP driver features, make sure to select the HP driver.

  6. Click Add to add the HP printer to the queue.

  7. If prompted to install any printer software, click Install, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.

  8. If prompted, type your administrator account name and password.
