This document is for HP and Compaq computers with Microsoft Edge browser and Windows 10.
HP PCs - Resolving Microsoft Edge Browser Issues (Windows 10)
Various issues can occur while using Microsoft Edge, including connection problems, general slowness, password issues, problems with Adobe Flash content, requests to use Internet Explorer, issues importing favorites, the Home button failing to display, and problems changing the default search engine. Select the section that corresponds to your problem.
Edge cannot connect to the Internet
If Microsoft Edge fails to connect to the Internet, first check for Internet issues, and then, if necessary, adjust administrator account settings.
Step 1: Check for Internet issues
Make sure your Internet connection is active and working correctly.

After checking the Internet connection, try to connect using Microsoft Edge again. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Check user account permissions
Check the registry to make sure the user account has full permissions.
caution:An incorrect registry entry can cause serious system problems or prevent the computer from starting. If you must edit the registry to resolve issues, you should always make a backup first. If the registry is damaged due to editing but has not been backed up, the only resolution might be a system recovery.For more information about backing up the Windows registry, see Backing Up, Editing, and Restoring the Windows Registry (Windows 10, 8).

In Windows, search for and open regedit.If you are prompted for an Administrator password or asked to confirm changes to your computer, type the password or provide confirmation.

Double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Double-click SOFTWARE.
-
Double-click Microsoft.
-
Double-click Windows NT.
-
Double-click CurrentVersion.
-
Right-click NetworkList, and then click Permissions.
-
In the Permissions for NetworkList window, select the correct user account in the Group or user names area, make sure the Allow box next to Full Control is checked, and then click OK.

Restart the computer, and then continue to the next step to adjust administrator settings in Windows PowerShell.
Step 3: Adjust administrator settings in Windows PowerShell
Add a network administrator command in Windows PowerShell to make sure the user account has the correct permissions.

In Windows, right-click Start, and then click Windows PowerShell (Admin).If a User Account Control window displays, click Yes.

Copy the following command, and then paste it in the command line of the Administrator: Windows PowerShell window.net localgroup Administrators "NT Authority\Local Service" /add

Press Enter, and then close Windows PowerShell.
Try to connect to the Internet using Microsoft Edge again. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 4: Set network services to automatic startup
Adjust settings so network services start up automatically.

In Windows, search for and open Services.

Double-click Network Connections.
-
On the General tab in the properties window, select Automatic in the Startup type menu, and then click OK.

Return to the Services window, then repeat these steps to set each of the services in the following list to Automatic.

Network Location Awareness

Network Store Interface Service

Microsoft Edge runs slowly, has trouble loading pages, or cannot connect
Microsoft Edge runs slowly, has trouble loading
pages, or does not connect to the Internet. An error message might display.
Step 1: Check for Windows updates
Having the most current software and drivers installed on your computer might resolve the issue.
note:To learn how to manage your update preferences, go to the Advanced options section.

In Windows, search for and open Windows Update settings.
-
Click Check for updates. If there are any available updates, they begin installing automatically.

After the updates install, restart your computer, if necessary.
Advanced options
Open the Advanced options menu for additional settings for Windows Update.

In the Windows Update window, click Advanced options.
-
In the Update options area, you can manage the delivery and installation of updates:
-
Turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows to have the computer automatically update other Microsoft products drives and apps when updating Windows.

Turn on Download updates over metered connections (extra charges may apply) to allow updates to download over a metered connection.
-
Turn on Restart this device as soon as possible when a restart is required to install an update. Windows displays a notice prior to restarting. The computer must be turned on and plugged in for this option.

If the issue persists after installing Windows updates, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter
The Windows Store Apps troubleshooter might detect and automatically correct the problem.

In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

In the Control Panel Search field, type Troubleshooting, and then select Troubleshooting.

In the Troubleshooting window select Hardware and Sound, and then click Windows Store Apps.
-
Click Next.
-
If the troubleshooter identifies any problems, follow the on-screen instructions.
-
After the troubleshooter completes, close it.
Try using Microsoft Edge. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Scan for damaged system files
Run a scan of the system to check for any damaged system files.

In Windows, right-click Start and then click Windows PowerShell (Admin).If a User Account Control window displays, click Yes.
-
In the command line of the Administrator: Windows PowerShell window, type sfc/scannow, and then press Enter.The System File Checker scans for and repairs missing or corrupted system files. This process might take several minutes.
After the scan completes, try using Microsoft Edge again. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 4: Clear browsing data
Clearing your browsing data might improve Microsoft Edge performance.

In Microsoft Edge, click the More icon
, click Settings, and then click Privacy & security.

In the Clear browsing data area, click Choose what to clear.

Check the boxes next to Browsing history, Cookies and saved website data, and Cached data and files, and then click Clear.
Passwords do not work
If your website passwords do not work, run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.
note:Microsoft Edge does not support Active X controls. If you are using third-party password software that uses Active X, those passwords do not work in Microsoft Edge.

In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

In the Control Panel Search field, type Troubleshooting, and then select Troubleshooting.

In the Troubleshooting window select Hardware and Sound, and then click Windows Store Apps.

Click Next.

If the troubleshooter identifies any problems, follow the on-screen instructions.

After the troubleshooter completes, close it.
Cannot play Flash content
Adobe Flash Player is integrated with Microsoft Edge in Windows 10. If the Flash player is not working, you might need to enable it.

In Microsoft Edge, click the More icon
, click Settings, and then click Advanced.

Turn on Use Adobe Flash Player.
-
On the Edge address bar, click the refresh icon
to refresh the webpage.
A PDF file does not open
Microsoft Edge might not open a PDF file if the file contains data for accessibility technologies, such as screen readers like Narrator. Internet Explorer might open a PDF file that Microsoft Edge cannot open.

In Microsoft Edge, click the More icon , click More tools, and then click Open with Internet Explorer.

When the webpage opens in Internet Explorer, follow the on-screen instructions to open the PDF file.
A message displays prompting you to use Internet Explorer
If the webpage you are trying to open uses older technologies, such as ActiveX controls, the webpage might not open correctly in Microsoft Edge. A message like the following displays:

This website needs Internet Explorer
-
This website uses technology that will work best in Internet Explorer
In Microsoft Edge, click the More icon , click More tools, and then click Open with Internet Explorer.
, click More tools, and then click Open with Internet Explorer.
Favorites do not import
If you have moved your Favorites folder to a different drive or folder, such as your D: drive, and you try to import your Favorites into Microsoft Edge, a message might display stating your favorites cannot be imported. Adjust your registry settings to import your favorites.

Close Microsoft Edge.

Copy the following folder name, paste it into the search box on the taskbar, and then select the folder name in the list of results.%localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\User\Default\Favorites

In Windows, search for and open Favorites.

In the User Account Favorites window, select all of your favorites, and then copy them.

Return to the Microsoft Edge User Default Favorites window you opened previously, and then paste your Favorites into the folder.

Double-click CurrentVersion.

Double-click AppContainer.

Double-click Storage.
-
Double-click microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.

Double-click MicrosoftEdge.
-
Right-click FavOrder, select Delete, and then close the Registry Editor.
Favorites are now available in Microsoft Edge.
The Home page button does not display
Use the advanced settings in Microsoft Edge to add a Home button to Microsoft Edge.

In Microsoft Edge, click the More icon, and then click Settings.
-
In the General settings window, toggle the Show the home button to the on position.
-
Select an option from the Show the home button menu.

Start page: Opens the Microsoft Edge Start page.
-
New tab page: Opens a new tab page.
-
A specific page: Opens a page that you choose. Type the URL of the webpage you want the Home button to open in the Enter a URL box, and then click the Save icon.

The Home button displays on the address bar.
Cannot change default search engine
Use the advanced settings in Microsoft Edge to change the default search engine.

In Microsoft Edge, browse to the URL of the search engine you want to use as the default.

Click the More icon, click Settings, and then click Advanced.
-
In the Address bar search area, click Change search provider.
-
Select the desired search engine, and then click Set as default.
The selected search engine is now the default.
