Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Jams

  • Paper jams can have several causes, but the most frequent is the use of the wrong paper. Please read and follow the recommendations found here.
  • As a general rule, clearing a jam is easiest if you can pull the paper in the feed direction of the ADF, although this is not always possible.

Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Jams Troubleshooting

Clearing a jam
  1. Look for any paper sticking out of the input tray or the output area under the input tray.
If any paper is found, grasp the paper in the center and gently pull until it comes out. The ADF is made to clear paper through the output, so if you can pull paper in this direction it is preferred.
  2. Open the ADF cover and look for any paper. If found grasp in the center and gently pull until freed.
  3. Lift the scanner lid an look under the ADF for paper. If paper is found covering the white plastic, it needs to be removed. This is most easily accomplished by pulling the paper from the output. If not enough paper is showing in the output bin, cut the paper along the length of the ADF, grasp each piece in the center and carefully pull until the paper is freed. Every piece of paper needs to be removed, see the Figure below.
  4. Power the printer off and on. If the message doesn’t clear, continue with the following troubleshooting.
Cleanout comb is loose
Open the ADF cover and look for a green notched piece of plastic extending the entire length of the ADF mechanism.
This comb should be securely in place. Verify that it doesn’t move when you lightly try to move it. If it is found to be loose, push it down with one hand at the top and one hand at the bottom, one finger on the tab and one finger on the notched plastic.
Paper jams from one corner
  1. If the paper starts to feed into the ADF and then stops on the top or bottom edge while the opposite edge continues to feed, you most likely have a foreign object blocking the paper path.
  2. Look carefully for a foreign object (paper clip, wad of paper, etc.) on the side where the paper stops. If possible remove the blockage. A pair of tweezers or pick is sometimes required.
  3. If unsuccessful in finding and/or removing any blockage, contact HP Support.
ADF excessively noisy and jams intermittently
This problem usually stems from a broken gear or lever in the ADF mechanism and is not customer repairable.
