HP Business PCs - Using HP BIOS Configuration Utility to set a BIOS administrator password

When a BIOS User account has been established by the initial setup of HP Protective Tools, you can establish a BIOS Administrator account using BiosConfigUtility.exe to gain administrative access to the BIOS.

Set up a BIOS Administrator password

To set up a BIOS Administrator account, you must set a BIOS Administrator password using HP BIOS Configuration Utility (BCU). As the BIOS Administrator, you can reset the passwords for other accounts or use Reset BIOS Security to Defaults to remove all accounts and security information in the TPM.

  1. Download the latest version of HP Image Assistant from the HP Client Management Solutions website.

  2. Install HP Image Assistant on any computer. It is not important to install HP Image Assistant on the target computer or to configure HP Image Assistant.

  3. Download the latest version of HP BCU from the Client Management Solutions - HP BIOS Configuration Utility (BCU) website. Copy it to the target computer as applicable.

  4. In Windows, search for Command Prompt, and then select Run as administrator to open a command prompt window with administrator permissions.

  5. Navigate to the HP BCU location from the command prompt window.

  6. Execute the following command from within the command prompt window:

    biosconfigutility /nspwd:"pwd"

    Note:

The quotes are required. Replace pwd with a password that meets the complexity requirements established in the BIOS.

  7. After the command is executed, HP BCU displays the message Successfully Modified the Setup Password. Exit the command prompt window.

  8. Restart, and then press f10 to enter the BIOS.

  9. When prompted, select the BIOS Administrator account, and then enter your chosen password.
