If an optional stapler finisher accessory is installed on the printer, you can assemble and staple pages when printing or copying. The collate option assembles the pages in the correct order in each set of copies.
The optional finisher accessories listed in the table below support collating and stapling.

The following sections contain information and instructions to perform different stapling tasks using the finisher accessory that you have installed on your printer. Click any section to expand it.
Follow these steps to collate and staple when copying from the automatic document feeder (ADF).
Place the documents face-up in the document feeder and adjust the paper guides to fit.
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Copy icon.

On the Copy screen, touch Options in the lower left corner.
In the Options pane, touch Staple, and then touch the desired stapling option.
The collate option is on by default. To turn off the collate option, scroll to the bottom of the Options pane, touch Collate, and then touch Off.
Select other settings in the Options pane (such as Sides and Content Orientation), as needed.
To adjust the number of copies, touch the box to the left of the Copy button, and then use the touch keypad to enter the number of copies. Touch Done to close the keypad.
Touch Copy to begin copying.
Follow these steps to collate and staple when printing from a Windows application, using the Smart Universal Print Driver (sUPD).
From the software application, click File, and then click Print.
Select the printer, and then click Printer Properties or Preferences.
Click the Finishing tab.
In the Staple drop-down menu, select the staple location.
Click the OK button to close the driver dialog, and then click Print.
Follow these steps to collate and staple when printing from a macOS application, using an HP print driver.
From the software application, click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer drop-down menu, select the appropriate printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then select Finishing.
In the Staple drop-down menu, select the desired staple location.
Click the Print button.
Use the convenience stapler on the exterior of the stapler/stacker finisher or booklet finisher for stapling documents.
To use the exterior stapler, align the documents and then insert them into the stapler slot. Press the Staple button on the top of the finisher. The finisher staples the documents on the corner that you insert.
The printer must be in a Ready state and not in Sleep Mode to use the exterior convenience stapler.

The tables below show the staple locations that can be configured when using an optional finisher accessory.
The output result depends on the document orientation and feed orientation. Feed orientation is the direction that you load the paper in the tray.
