This document explains how to set up the printer and install the software and also includes information about the printer features.

Follow these steps to set up the printer.
Refer to the table below to learn which setup options are available for your printer model.
To verify your printer model, refer to the nameplate on the front panel of the printer.

Complete the hardware setup before installing the printer software.
If the printer hardware is already set up, skip to Step four: Choose a connection method for steps to select a method to connect your printer to the network.

Follow these steps when unpacking the printer.
Select a site to place the printer that meets the following specifications:
A sturdy work surface in a well-ventilated and dust-free area, and away from direct sunlight
Temperature range: 15° - 27° C (59° to 80.6° F)
Humidity range: 30% - 70%
Allow sufficient space around the printer to open all doors and trays.
The printer weighs 20.4 kg (45 lb).

Take the printer out of the box and remove all tape and packing material.
HP recommends recycling the packaging materials.
Follow these steps to turn on the printer.
Connect the power cable between the printer and a grounded AC outlet, and then press the Power button to turn on the printer.
To prevent damage to the printer, use only the power cable that is provided with the printer.

Wait for the printer to power on.
On the printer control panel, touch the desired language from the list, touch Confirm (to confirm the language), and then touch the desired country/region.
The following information describes how to load paper into Tray 2.
This tray holds up to 250 sheets of 75 grams per square meter (20 lb) paper.

Adjust the paper-length and paper-width guides by squeezing the adjustment latches and sliding the guides to the size of paper being used.
If loading legal paper, squeeze the latch inside the front, right side of the tray and pull forward. Tray 2 will extend from the front of the printer approximately 50.8 mm (2 in).

Load paper into the tray.
To prevent jams, do not overfill the tray. Make sure the top of the stack is below the tray-full indicator.

Verify that the paper guides lightly touch the stack or paper, but do not bend it.

When a message displays on the printer control panel prompting you to select a method to connect your printer, follow these steps to choose the method that you want to use.
Wi-Fi is not supported on all printer models. For models that do not support Wi-Fi, choose from the other connection options.
On the printer control panel, when prompted to select a connection method, touch the desired option (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB).
Continue to Step five: Connect your printer to the network for instructions to connect your printer to the network.
Click the section below for the connection method that you chose in the previous step, and then follow the instructions to connect your printer to the network.
Follow these steps to connect your printer to the network using an Ethernet cable.
After selecting Ethernet as the connection method, connect an Ethernet cable.
Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to your network port and the other end to the Ethernet port on the rear of the printer.
Make sure you connect the Ethernet cable to the same network as the computer.

When the Ethernet Summary screen displays on the printer control panel, touch Continue.
Follow the instructions on the printer control panel until you reach the Home screen.
Follow these steps to connect the printer to the wireless network using the printer control panel.
For a Wi-Fi setup, do NOT connect any cables.
Make sure that the router Wi-Fi is turned on and in range of the printer.

After selecting Wi-Fi as the connection method, a list of available networks will display on the printer control panel.
Touch your network name from the list of available networks.
Use the touch keypad on the printer control panel to enter your Wi-Fi password and then touch Done.
Touch OK to confirm the settings.
When the printer has successfully connected to the network, a "Connection Successful" screen will display on the control panel and show the IP address for the printer.
Follow these steps to connect your printer using a USB cable.
After selecting USB as the connection method, touch Skip Connecting.
Connect the square end of the USB cable to the back of the printer and the flat end of the cable to the computer.
Follow the instructions that display on the printer control panel until you reach the Home screen.
Follow these steps to install the printer software on your computer.
You might be asked to enter the printer PIN during set up.

On your computer, open a Web browser and go to hpsmart.com/download.
Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the printer software.

If the printer is unable to find your router during Wi-Fi setup, check the following conditions to resolve the issue.

Move your printer closer to the router. Your printer might be out of range of the router's Wi-Fi signal. |
Computer connected to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or remote work network |
Disconnect from a VPN before installing HP printer software. Connect to the VPN again after finishing printer setup.

Consider your location and the security of the Wi-Fi network before disconnecting from a VPN. |

If your computer is connected by Ethernet, turn on the computer's Wi-Fi while setting up the printer.

You do not need to disconnect the Ethernet cable from the printer. |
If you completed setup, but have issues with maintaining a Wi-Fi connection, check the wireless status and restart setup mode to try connecting again.

Open the Dashboard by touching or swiping at the top of the display to access printer tasks and status.
The icons on the Home screen can vary, depending on the printer configuration.
