HP Notebook PCs - Tips for using an HP docking station or hub

HP docking stations and hubs simplify the process of connecting a notebook computer to a power supply, a wired network, and peripherals.

For information about whether a docking station or hub is compatible with your notebook, see HP Notebook PCs - Use Product Content Browser to find compatible docking stations and accessories for your PC model.

For information specific to your docking station or hub, see the Quick Setup Poster and User Guide. Go to HP Customer Support, follow the on-screen instructions to find your product, and then select Manuals.

Set up your docking station or hub

To set up your docking station or hub, perform the following steps.

  1. Connect the docking station or hub to AC power.

    Note:

If an HP AC adapter is included, use the HP AC adapter. You can also use your HP computer AC adapter.

  2. Connect any peripherals, such as a monitor, to the docking station or hub.

  3. Connect the docking station or hub to your computer.

  4. Press the button on the docking station or hub to turn on your computer and monitor, if necessary.

  5. Go to HP Customer Support, and then update your software, hardware, and drivers.

    Note:

Thunderbolt docking stations might require a BIOS update. For more information, see your User Guide.

Configure a monitor

After connecting a monitor to the docking station or hub, use Windows to configure the monitor settings, and to customize the screen image.

  1. Press the Windows key + p.

  2. Select one of the following options:

    • To view the screen image on the monitor only, select Second screen only.

    • To view the screen image extended across both the computer and the monitor, select Extend.

    • To view the screen image simultaneously on both the computer and the monitor, select Duplicate.

For information about the number of monitors you can connect to your docking station or hub, see your Quick Setup Poster or User Guide.

Some docking stations have a high-resolution and low-resolution mode. For more information, see your User Guide.

Disconnect the docking station or hub

To disconnect the docking station or hub from the computer, disconnect the cable from the computer.

Note:

Do not disconnect the docking station or hub while updating your firmware or software. Doing so might cause the docking station or hub to become unusable. Wait until the firmware or software update is complete.

Note:

Do not restart or shut down your computer, or initiate Sleep or Hibernation, until the docking station or hub is fully disconnected from the computer.
