HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101, 4102, 4103, 4104 - How to set up Device with USB

Learn how to setup the printer with a USB connection.

When selecting a connection method select "Connect Later".

When you select this option, a message will display on the printer control panel to notify you that you will not be able to use all the available features that are delivered through a network connection.

Customer steps

Use the following steps to connect to the printer using USB.

  1. To continue with this option, touch Skip Connecting.

  2. When the Set Date and Time screen displays on the printer control panel, use touch and scroll gestures to set the date and time, and then touch Continue.

    The Get HP Software screen will display on the printer control panel with instructions to go to hpsmart.com/start to complete setup.

  3. On the Get HP Software screen, touch Continue. The printer will proceed to a Ready state and the Home screen will display with the date, time, and menu icons.

  4. Connect your USB Cable.

  5. On your computer, open a Web browser and go to hpsmart.com/start.

  6. Scroll down to Set up a printer and Select Set up.

  7. Enter in your printer model and select Next.

  8. Select Begin Setup and Install HP Easy Start.

  9. When the “Choose a printer” screen displays in HP Easy Start software, select the printer you are setting up. (Should say “USB Connected”).

    Note:

    If HP Easy Start finds a printer, select Printer Not Shown button. This will bring you to the “Choose a printer” screen.

  10. Select USB Cable.

  11. Select Continue.

  12. Select Full Software and Drivers.

  13. Select No Thanks or Yes for Application Analytics

    Note:

    If prompted to select a printer to install on the network, click My device is not listed, and then click Next.

    If prompted to connect an Ethernet cable, click Cancel.

    When the “Connection Options” screen displays, select the radio button next to USB, and then click Next.

    Note:

    Fax Setup Wizard will pop up behind the loading screen. You will need to select Next or skip.

  14. When the “Setup Complete” screen displays, click Finish.

    The printer is ready to use.
