HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301, 4302, 4303 - Find the Printer PIN to access the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) printer settings

Learn how to access the printer settings in the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) using the factory-set credentials for HP LaserJet Pro printers.

The PIN is a secure feature designed for HP LaserJet Pro printers to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) printer settings. This factory-set PIN or default PIN prevents an unauthorized user from accessing and modifying the printer settings.

Note:

The default PIN can only be changed by an administrator.

Use the procedure in this document to obtain the default PIN to access the EWS settings.

Step one: Access the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) from a web browser

Follow these steps to obtain the printer's IP address and then use it to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) from a web browser.

To access the Embedded Web Server (EWS), you will need the printer's IP address. You can obtain the printer's IP address on the printer control panel.

Follow these steps to obtain the printer's IP address and then access the EWS.

Note:

Your printer must be connected to an IP-based network before you can access the EWS.

  1. Obtain the printer's IP address.

    1. On the Home screen of the control panel, touch the white bar located at the top of the screen. (callout 1).

    2. An information screen will show the printers IP address (callout 1).

    3. To return to the Home screen on the printer, touch the white bar located at the bottom of the screen (callout 2).

  2. Open the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS).

    1. On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the IP address or host name exactly as it displayed on the printer control panel.

    2. Press Enter on the computer keyboard.

      Note:

      If the browser displays a message indicating that accessing the website might not be safe, select the option to continue to the website. Accessing the website will not harm the computer.

      The EWS opens.

Step two: Obtain the PIN from the printer

After the Embedded Web Server (EWS) opens, you will be prompted to enter a PIN on the Sign In with PIN screen.

Follow these steps to access the front door of the printer to view the default PIN.

Note:

This procedure applies when the default PIN is not changed by an administrator or user.

  1. Open the front door of the printer to obtain the default PIN.

    1. Press the front door release button (1) to open the front door (2).

    2. Locate the label attached to the cartridge tray inside the front door to view the factory set default Username (admin) and default PIN.

      The factory default credentials includes a "Username" and "PIN".

    3. Make sure to note the default PIN on the label inside the front door on the cartridge tray.

    4. Close the cartridge door.

      Important:

      The cartridge door must be closed for the printer to operate properly.

    Important:

    If a custom PIN number for the printer has been set, check with the printer administrator to get the custom PIN number.

Step three: Access the printer setting using the PIN

Use the PIN obtained from the printer to access the printer settings.

If setting up the printer and using EWS for the first time the printer default PIN located on the label is the correct PIN. The default PIN number should be used exactly as it appears on the label attached to the front of the cartridge tray.

Note:

If the default PIN has been changed check with the administrator who created the Custom PIN or Printer PIN.

  1. Log in to the EWS using the PIN number.

    1. On the Sign In with PIN screen in the EWS, enter the PIN number below the label example exactly as it appears on the cartridge tray label or the custom PIN provided by the printer administrator.

      Important:

      The label graphic displayed in EWS is an example and your printer label with default PIN may be different.

    2. Click Sign In.

      After entering the correct PIN, you can configure the printer settings.

      Note:

      If you enter the wrong PIN number three times, your PIN is locked.

      To enter the correct PIN in the EWS after three failed attempts: Close the EWS browser tab, open a new browser tab to access the EWS, and then try to enter the correct PIN number.

      Note:

      If the Log In continues to fail, a custom PIN number might be set. Check with the printer administrator to get the new PIN number.

To maintain security for the printer after accessing the printer settings, click Sign In/Sign Out icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen, and then click Sign Out. The screen will go back to the Home page.
