HP provides periodic firmware updates for printers to help address any known issues and add new features (including new Web Services apps). To obtain all the latest updates, you must update the firmware on your printer.
There are two supported methods (listed below) for updating the firmware on your printer. Choose one of the methods and then follow the steps provided.
For USB-connected printers, use Method two: Update the firmware using the HP Printer Update utility.

Use this method to update the firmware using the printer control panel (for network-connected printers only), and to set the printer to automatically update the firmware when new updates become available.
The printer must be connected to the internet to update the firmware via a network connection.
The steps vary according to the type of control panel.

Find your printer control-panel type in the options below, and then follow the steps provided.
Follow these steps if your printer has a touchscreen control panel with a white background.

Make sure the printer is connected to a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network with an active Internet connection.
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .
Scroll to and touch Printer Maintenance, and then touch Update the Printer.
If the Update the Printer option is not listed, skip to Method two: Update the firmware using the HP Printer Update utility.
Touch Check for Printer Updates Now to check for updates.
The printer automatically checks for an update, and if a newer version is detected, the update process starts automatically.
Set the printer to automatically update the firmware when updates become available:
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .
Scroll to and touch Printer Maintenance, and then touch Update the Printer.
Touch Manage Updates, touch Allow Updates, and then touch Yes.
Touch the Back button , touch Printer Update Options, and then touch Install Automatically (Recommended).
Follow these steps if your printer has a touchscreen control panel with a black background.

Make sure the printer is connected to a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network with an active Internet connection.
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Setup icon (or ).
Scroll to and touch Service, and then touch LaserJet Update.
If the LaserJet Update option is not listed, skip to Method two: Update the firmware using the HP Printer Update utility.
Touch Check for Updates Now to check for updates.
The printer automatically checks for an update, and if a newer version is detected, the update process automatically starts.
Set the printer to automatically update the firmware when updates become available:
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Setup icon (or ).
Scroll to and touch Service, and then touch LaserJet Update.
Touch Manage Updates.
Set the Allow Updates option to YES, and then set the Check automatically option to ON.
Follow these steps for printers that have a 2-line LCD control panel with physical buttons to press.

Make sure the printer is connected to a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network with an active Internet connection.
On the printer control panel, press the OK button to display the Home screen.
Use the arrow buttons and the OK button to navigate to and open the following menus:
Setup
Printer Maintenance
Update Firmware
If the Update Firmware option is not listed, skip to Method two: Update the firmware using the HP Printer Update utility.
If a firmware update is available, press the OK button to start the update process.
Follow these steps to update the printer firmware on all other LaserJet Pro printers that have a 2-line LCD control panel.
Make sure the printer is connected to a wired (Ethernet) or wireless network with an active Internet connection.
On the printer control panel, press the OK button to open the Setup menu.
Use the arrow buttons and the OK button to navigate to and open the Service menu, and then the LaserJet Update menu.
If the LaserJet Update option is not listed, skip to Method two: Update the firmware using the HP Printer Update utility.
Select Check for Update to check for updates.
The printer automatically checks for an update, and if a newer version is detected, the update process automatically starts.
Set the printer to automatically update the firmware when updates become available:
On the printer control panel, press the OK button to open the Setup menu.
Use the arrow buttons and the OK button to navigate to and open the Service menu, the LaserJet Update menu, and then the Manage Updates menu.
Set the Allow Updates option to YES, and then set the Automatic Check option to ON.
Use this method to manually download and install the HP Printer Update utility.
This is the only firmware update option available for printers connected to the computer via a USB cable. This method also works for printers that are connected to a network.
You must have a print driver installed in order to use this method.
Print a network setting page or printer status page to check the current firmware version.
On the printer control panel, press OK to display the Home screen.
Use the Arrow buttons to navigate to Setup, and then press OK.
Navigate to and open the Reports menu.
Select either Printer Network configuration Report to print a Network settings page or select Printer status report.
Make a note of the installed firmware version.
After upgrading the firmware, the version will change to 925.2119A.
Download the firmware file.
Go to www.hp.com/go/support, click Software and Drivers, and then click Printer.
In the search field, type the printer name, and then select Submit.
In the Firmware section, locate the Firmware Update file.
Click Download, and then save the file to the computer.
Navigate to the location where you saved the .exe file.
Double-click the file to start the upgrade process.
The printer utility opens.
Wait for the utility to find printers connected to the PC via USB or network.
Select the printer(s) for which you want to upgrade the firmware and select Update.
The firmware upgrade begins.
The control panel will display the upgrade status. First Updating... will display, and then after transfer of the files, the message will change to Downloading....
After the download is complete, wait for the printer to reboot to a Ready
state. It will reboot automatically.
To verify that the printer firmware upgrade was successful, print a Printer Network configuration Report or Printer status report using the steps you followed previously, and then check the firmware version.
Click the OK button to close the utility.
Navigate to the location where you saved the .dmg file.
Double-click the file to start the upgrade.
After you run the .dmg file, three files will save to the desktop.
Click the HP Firmware Updater file. A file is created on desktop HP Laserjet Pro M404 M405 XXXXX where 'XXXXX' is the firmware version number.
Click this file to start the firmware upgrade process.
The printer utility opens.
Wait for the utility to find printers connected to the PC via USB or network.
Select the printer(s) for which you want to upgrade the firmware and select Continue.
Select Continue again to begin the firmware upgrade.
The utility and the control panel will display the upgrade status. First Updating... will display, and then after transfer of the files, the message will change to Downloading....
After the download is complete, wait for the printer to reboot to a Ready
state. It will reboot automatically.
To verify that the printer firmware upgrade was successful, print a Printer Network configuration Report or Printer status report using the steps you followed previously, and then check the firmware version.
Click the Done button to close the utility.
