HP LaserJet Pro - Configure the HP toner-cartridge-protection supply settings

Use HP Cartridge Policy and Cartridge Protection to control which cartridges are installed in the printer and protect the cartridges that are installed from theft.

Cartridge Policy: This feature protects the printer from counterfeit toner cartridges by allowing only genuine HP cartridges to be used with the printer. Using genuine HP cartridges ensures the best possible print quality. When someone installs a cartridge that is not a genuine HP cartridge, the printer control panel displays a message that the cartridge is unauthorized and it provides information explaining how to proceed.
Cartridge Protection: This feature permanently associates toner cartridges with a specific printer, or fleet of printers, so they cannot be used in other printers. Protecting cartridges protects your investment. When this feature is enabled, if someone attempts to transfer a protected cartridge from the original printer into an unauthorized printer, that printer will not print with the protected cartridge. The printer control panel displays a message that the cartridge is protected, and it provides information explaining how to proceed.

CAUTION:
After enabling cartridge protection for the printer, all subsequent toner cartridges installed in the printer are automatically and permanently protected. To avoid protecting a new cartridge, disable the feature before installing the new cartridge.

Turning the feature off does not turn off protection for cartridges that are currently installed.

Both features are off by default. Follow these procedures to enable or disable them.

A network administrator can configure the toner-cartridge-protection settings using the printer control panel or the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Enable or disable the Cartridge Policy feature

When the Cartridge Policy feature is enabled, only genuine HP cartridges can be used with the printer. When the feature is disabled, there is no restriction on the type of cartridges that are used with the printer.

There are two methods for enabling or disabling the Cartridge Policy feature: (1) by using the printer control panel, or (2) by using the Embedded Web Server (EWS). Choose one of the methods below and then follow the steps provided.

Note:

Enabling or disabling this feature might require entering an administrator password.

Use the printer control panel to enable or disable the Cartridge Policy feature

The steps to enable or disable the Cartridge Policy feature on the printer vary according to the control-panel type.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .
Open the following menus:
1. Supply Settings
2. Cartridge Policy
Select the desired option:
- To enable: Touch Authorized HP.
- To disable: Touch Off.

Use the arrow buttons and the OK button to navigate to and open the following menus:
1. Setup or System Setup (the menu name varies among printer models)
2. Supply Settings
3. Cartridge Policy
Select the desired option:
- To enable: Use the arrow buttons to select Authorized HP, and then press the OK button.
- To disable: Use the arrow buttons to select Off, and then press the OK button.

1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon , or the Ethernet icon , to view the printer's IP address or host name.
Open the Embedded Web Server:
1. On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the IP address or host name exactly as it displayed on the printer control panel.

  Note:
  If the browser displays a message indicating that accessing the website might not be safe, select the option to continue to the website. Accessing the website will not harm the computer.
  
  The EWS opens.

In the left navigation pane, click Supplies to expand the options, and then click Supply Settings.
From the Cartridge Policy drop-down list, select the desired option:
- To enable: Select Authorized HP.
- To disable: Select Off.
Click Apply to save the changes.

Follow these steps to enable or disable the Cartridge Policy feature in the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Note:

To access the EWS, you will need the printer's IP address. You can obtain the printer's IP address on the printer control panel.

Follow these steps to obtain the IP address and then access the EWS and enable or disable the Cartridge Policy feature.

Obtain the printer's IP address:
1. On the printer control panel, press the OK button to display the Home screen.
2. Use the arrow buttons to navigate to and open the following menus: Setup → Network Setup → General Settings.
3. On the General Settings menu, select Show the IP Address, and then select Yes to display the printer's IP address or host name.
Open the Embedded Web Server:
1. On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the IP address or host name exactly as it displayed on the printer control panel.

Note:

To access the EWS, you will need the printer's IP address. You can obtain the printer's IP address on the printer control panel.

Follow these steps to obtain the IP address and then access the EWS and enable or disable the Cartridge Policy feature.

Obtain the printer's IP address:
1. On the printer control panel, press the OK button.
2. Open the Network Setup menu, and then select Show IP Address to display the IP address or host name.

1. On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the IP address or host name exactly as it displayed on the printer control panel.

Enable or disable the Cartridge Protection feature

When the Cartridge Protection feature is enabled, it protects the cartridges associated with the printer from being stolen and used in other printers. When the feature is disabled, it removes protection for any new cartridges that are installed in the printer.

There are two methods for enabling or disabling the Cartridge Protection feature: (1) by using the printer control panel, or (2) by using the Embedded Web Server (EWS). Choose one of the methods below and then follow the steps provided.

Note:

Enabling or disabling this feature might require entering an administrator password.
