Connect an HP printer using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

Quickly connect an HP printer to your Wi-Fi network using the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) push button method. You do not need the network name and password to connect the printer using WPS.

Some router brands do not support connecting with WPS. Before you begin, make sure your router has a WPS button or a button with the WPS icon .

If your router does not support WPS, go to HP printer setup (Wi-Fi network) for steps to connect the printer to the network with the HP Smart app.

  1. Place the printer and the computer or mobile device near the Wi-Fi router.

  2. Put the printer in WPS connection mode.

    • Most printers with a touchscreen control panel: Open the Setup, Network, or Wireless settings menu, select Wi-Fi Protected Setup, select Push Button, and then select Start.

    • Most printers without a touchscreen control panel: Press and hold the Wireless button for five seconds or until the wireless light starts to flash.

    • HP Deskjet 6000 and 6400, ENVY 6000 and 6400, and Tango printers: Press and hold the Wi-Fi button and the Power button on the back of the printer for five seconds until the blue bar flashes.

  3. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button on the router for three to five seconds, or until the connection process begins.

  4. Return to the printer and check the status of the wireless light or bar.

    • If the light or blue bar stops flashing, the printer successfully connected to the network. Go to 123.hp.com to install the HP software to complete the connection to your computer or mobile device. For Chromebooks, go to HP printer setup (Chromebook).

    • If the light or blue bar is still flashing or turned off, the connection failed. Continue to the next step.

  5. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode.

    • Most printers with a touchscreen display or menu: Open the Wireless or Setup menu, select Network setup or Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.

    • Printers without a touchscreen display or menu: Go to Restore Wi-Fi setup mode on your HP printer to restore default settings by pressing the buttons on your printer.

  6. Repeat the steps to put the printer and router in WPS mode to complete the connection.
