HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M182-M183 Printers - First Time Printer Setup

This document is for HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M182n, M182nw, and M183fw printers.
To set up a printer for the first time, remove the printer and all packing materials from the box, load paper into the input tray, connect the power cable, set control panel preferences, and then download and install the printer software.
note:
If you are looking for the printer software, go to 123.hp.com.

Step 1: Remove the printer from the box

Remove the printer from the box and all tape, stickers, and packing materials from the printer.
note:
The toner cartridges come preinstalled in your printer. You do not need to remove the toner cartridges from the printer.
  1. Remove the printer from the box.
  2. Remove all tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer, and then remove the film from the printer control panel.
  3. Recycle the packing materials.

Step 2: Load plain paper in the input tray

Load plain paper, such as A4, U.S. letter, or legal, into the input tray.
  1. Open the input tray.

  2. Pull out the input tray, and then slide out the paper width guides as far as possible. When you are loading legal-size paper, extend the input tray.

  3. Load up to 150 sheets of paper with the print side facing up and the top edge toward the printer. If you are loading pre-punched paper, load the paper with the holes toward the left side of the tray.

  4. Slide in the paper guides until they touch the edges of the stack of paper.

  5. Close the input tray.

  6. Press down on the output bin extension to open it, and then lower the output bin extender.

Step 3: Connect the power cord, and then turn on the printer

Plug the printer into a wall outlet, and then turn on the printer.
note:
Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The connection to the computer is established during software installation.
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

  2. Turn on the printer.
    The printer initializes and then calibrates itself.
  3. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

Step 4: Set your language preference (printers with a 2-line display)

Set the language preference for your printer. Skip to the step to install the printer software if your printer does not have a 2-line control panel display.
  1. On the printer control panel, press the Setup button .
  2. Press the right arrow until System Setup displays, and then press OK.
  3. Select Language, and then press OK.
  4. Press the right arrow to find the desired language in the list, if necessary.
  5. Select your desired language, and then press OK.
Your HP printer hardware is now set up, and you can install the printing software.

Step 5: Install the printer software

Download the latest version of the printing software from 123.hp.com, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
