HP Laser Printers - Using the Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

This document is for network and Wi-Fi Direct-capable HP Laser printers.

The HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) is a printer homepage accessed through a web browser for managing settings and performing maintenance tasks.

There are two ways to open the printer homepage:

For printers connected to a local network: Obtain the printer IP address, the unique identification number assigned to the printer on the network, and enter it into a web browser address bar.
Connect to the printer with Wi-Fi Direct: Set up this direct wireless connection to the printer, and then enter the IP address 192.168.223.1 into a web browser address bar.

Use the IP address (network-connected printers)

If your printer is connected to the local network, get the IP address, and then type it into a web browser on a computer or mobile device to open the printer homepage.

Make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer or mobile device.
Print a network configuration page to obtain the IP address.
- Printers with a control panel:
  
  Go to the Network menu, select Network Config., and then press the OK button.
- Printers without a control panel:
  
  Press and hold the Resume/Cancel button for 10 seconds.
Type the IP address into the web browser address line, and then press Enter.
If a website security certificate displays, click Continue to open the printer homepage.
Click Login, and then type admin for the username. If a password is required, use the WPS Security PIN which can be found by printing a Network Configuration Report.

Connect with Wi-Fi Direct

Use a direct wireless connection to your printer to access the printer homepage on your computer or mobile device.

Place the printer close to your computer or mobile device.
Turn on the printer and make sure ink cartridges are installed and paper is loaded in the tray.
Get the Wi-Fi Direct printer name (Example: DIRECT-5B-HP Laser 107w) and password.
- Printers with a control panel display: Locate the Wi-Fi Direct menu or open the Wi-Fi Direct settings menu to get the name and password.
- Printers without a control panel display: Press and hold the Resume/Cancel button for 10 seconds to print a Network Configuration report that lists the name and password.
On your computer or mobile device, open the Wi-Fi or wireless settings to view the list of available wireless networks.
Select your Wi-Fi Direct printer name from the list of networks, and then enter the password to connect to the printer.
In a web browser, type 192.168.223.1 into the address bar.
If a website security certificate displays, click Continue to open the printer homepage.
Click Login, and then type admin for the username. If a password is required, use the WPS Security PIN which can be found by printing a Network Configuration Report.
Reconnect to your local Wi-Fi network after making any changes.

How do I manually assign an IP address to my printer?

Under certain conditions, the printer network settings can cause the IP address, the address assigned to your printer on the network, to change. When this happens, the computer or mobile device cannot locate the printer. Changing to a manual IP address prevents the connection from changing.

On the printer homepage, select Network Settings under the Settings tab.
Click TCP/IPv4, and then select Manually in the Assign IPv4 Address: drop-down menu.
Type your new IPv4 Address, and then click Apply.

The printer reconnects to the network and the printer IP address changes.

Can I set up my printer on a local network through the printer homepage?

Use the Wizard on the Network Settings page to connect your printer to a local network.

Place the printer close to your computer or mobile device and to the wireless router.
Turn on the printer and make sure ink cartridges are installed and paper is loaded in the tray.
Get the Wi-Fi Direct printer name (Example: DIRECT-5B-HP Laser 107w) and password.

If a website security certificate displays, click Continue to open the printer homepage.
On the printer homepage, hover over the Settings tab, and then click Network Settings.
In the left sidebar, click Wi-Fi, click Wizard, and then follow the instructions to select your local network and enter the password to complete the connection.

note:
If you need your network name (SSID) and password, go to Finding Your Wireless Password.
Reconnect to your local Wi-Fi network after completing the printer setup.

How do I change the EWS username and password?

Secure your printer by changing the default username and password to log in to the printer EWS.

Open the EWS.
Click Login in the top-right corner, and then type admin for the user name. If a password is required, use the WPS Security PIN which can be found by printing a Network Configuration Report.

A prompt displays requesting the user to change the ID and password.

note:
If you are already logged in, hover over the Security tab, click System Security, and then click System Administrator.
Click Yes.
In the Web Interface Security section, type a new login ID, type a new password, confirm the new password, and then click Apply.
