HP LaserJet Pro, Ultra Printers - First Time Printer Setup

This document is for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw, M148fdw, M227d, M227fdn, M227fdw, M227sdn, LaserJet Ultra MFP M230sdn and M230fdw printers.
To set up a printer for the first time, remove the printer and all packing materials from the box, load paper into the input tray, connect the power cable, set control panel preferences, and then download and install the printer software.

Step 1: Remove the printer from the box

The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.
Remove the printer from the box and all tape, stickers, and packing materials from the printer.
note:
The toner cartridge comes preinstalled in your printer. You do not need to remove the toner cartridge from the printer.
  1. Remove the printer from the box.
  2. Remove all tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer, and then remove the film from the printer control panel.
  3. Recycle the packing materials.

Step 2: Load plain paper in the main input tray

Load plain paper, such as A4, U.S. letter, or U.S. legal, into the main input tray.
  1. Lower the main input tray door, and then slide out the paper width guides as far as possible.

  2. Load up to 250 sheets of paper with the print side facing up and the top edge toward the printer. If you are loading pre-punched paper, load the paper with the holes toward the left side of the tray.

  3. Slide in the paper guides until they touch the edge of the stack of paper.

  4. Press down on the output bin extension to open it, and then lower the output bin extender.
    • If you loaded A4 or U.S. letter-size paper, close the main input tray door.
    • If you loaded U.S. legal-size or larger paper, do not close the main input tray door.

    Before printing or copying, select the correct paper size and paper type settings from the control panel or computer.

Step 3: Connect the power cord, and then turn on the printer

Plug the printer into a wall outlet, and then turn on the printer.
note:
Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The connection to the computer is established during software installation.
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

  2. Turn on the printer.
    The printer initializes and then calibrates itself.
  3. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Step 4: Set your preferences

To set your preferences for your printer, select the instructions for your printer.
Your HP printer hardware is now set up and you can install the printing software.

Step 5: Install the printer software

Download the latest version of the printing software from 123.hp.com/laserjet, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
