HP PageWide 300, 400, 500 Series - Printing two-sided documents does not work when printing files from a USB thumb drive using Plug and Print

Issue

Printing two-sided documents does not work when printing files from a USB thumb drive using the Plug and Print feature.

Cause

When documents are created using the "Print to File" option, the print settings that are specified at that time are embedded in the file. These settings override any settings that are manually specified on the printer control panel when printing from a USB thumb drive using Plug and Print.

Workaround

To print two-sided documents from a USB thumb drive using the Plug and Print feature, the following workarounds are available:
  • When you create a file using the "Print to File" option, specify the print settings (e.g. two-sided) for the desired output at that time. Then when you go to print the file from a USB thumb drive using Plug and Print, the file will print with those settings.
  • You can print Microsoft Word and PowerPoint files (.doc, .docx, .ppt and .pptx) from a USB thumb drive using the Plug and Print feature. When you go to print these file types from a USB thumb drive, you can select the print settings for the desired output (i.e. two-sided) on the printer control panel.
  • You can save Microsoft Word and PowerPoint files as Adobe PDF files, and then print the PDF files from a USB thumb drive using Plug and Print. When you go to print the PDF files from a USB thumb drive, you can select the print settings for the desired output (i.e. two-sided) on the printer control panel.
  • You can print Adobe PDF files (created in any application) from a USB thumb drive using Plug and Print. When you go to print the PDF files from the USB thumb drive, you can select the print settings for the desired output (i.e. two-sided) on the printer control panel.
