HP Color LaserJet Pro M252 and M277 Printers - Adjusting the Printer Energy-Saving Settings

This document applies to the HP Color LaserJet Pro M252n and M252dw, and HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277n and M277dw printers for Windows XP and later and Mac OS X v10.7 and later operating systems.

HP LaserJet printers are equipped with energy-saving features that allow customers to adjust the Sleep/Auto Off and the Shut Down After Inactivity settings on the printer. You can adjust these settings using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) or the printer control panel.

Choose a method you would like to use, and then follow the instructions to adjust your energy settings.

Use the control panel to adjust your energy-saving settings

Select the type of control panel your printer has, and then follow the directions to set the amount of time that elapses before the printer goes into energy-saving mode.

2-line control panel (M252n only)

If your printer has a 2-line control panel, use these instructions to set the amount of time you want the printer to wait before it goes into energy-saving mode.

On the printer control panel, press the Power button to turn on the printer if it is not already on.
Press the OK button.
Press the Right Arrow () button to scroll to System Setup, and then press the OK button.
Press the Right Arrow button to scroll to Energy Settings, and then press the OK button.
Press the Right Arrow button to select one of the following energy-saving functions:
- Sleep/Auto Off After: Press the Right Arrow button to select your desired time of inactivity before the printer goes to sleep or turns off.
- Shut Down After: Press the Right Arrow button to select your desired time of inactivity before the printer shuts down.
- Delay Shutdown: Press the Right Arrow button to select your desired length of time to delay turning off the printer.
Press the Back Arrow () to return to the control panel home screen.

Touchscreen control panel

If your printer has a touchscreen control panel, use these instructions to set the amount of time you want the printer to wait before it goes into energy-saving mode.

On the printer control panel, press the Power button to turn on the printer if it is not already on.
Touch the System Setup button ().
Swipe left to scroll to the Energy Settings menu.
Swipe left to select one of the following energy-saving functions:
- Sleep/Auto Off After: Press the Right Arrow button to select your desired time of inactivity before the printer goes to sleep or turns off.
- Shut Down After: Press the Right Arrow button to select your desired time of inactivity before the printer shuts down.
- Delay Shutdown: Press the Right Arrow button to select your desired length of time to delay turning off the printer.

Step one: Print a Configuration Report

Print a Configuration Report to find the printer IP address.

Make sure that there is unused, plain white letter or A4 paper in the input tray.
On the printer control panel, press the Power button to turn on the printer if it is not already on.
Press the OK button.
Press the Right Arrow button () to scroll to Reports, and then press the OK button.
Press the Right Arrow button to scroll to Configuration Report, and then press the OK button.

The Configuration Report prints.

Step two: Open the EWS and adjust the settings

Use the IP address to open the EWS and set the amount of time before the printer goes into energy-saving mode.

Under TCP/IP(v4) on the Configuration Report, find the IPv4 Address. This is the printer's IP address.

Open a web browser (for example, Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox).
In the browser's address line, type the IP address listed on the Configuration Report, and then press Enter. Type this value exactly as it displays on the Configuration Report.

note:
Make sure that you type the IP address into the browser's address box. If you type it into a tool bar search box, the EWS does not open.

In the EWS window, click the System tab, and then click Energy Savings.
In the drop-down menu for Sleep/Auto Off After Inactivity, select your desired time of inactivity before the printer goes to sleep.
In the drop-down menu for Shut Down After Inactivity, select your desired time of inactivity before the printer turns off.

If your printer has a touchscreen control panel, use these instructions to set the amount of time you want the printer to wait before it goes into energy-saving mode.

Step one: Print a Configuration Report

Print a Configuration Report to find the printer IP address.

Touch the Setup button ().
Swipe left to scroll to the Reports menu.
Swipe left to select Configuration Report.

The Configuration Report prints.

Use the IP address to open the EWS, and then adjust the times for the printer to go into energy-saving mode.
