HP Designjet Z5400 PostScript ePrinter Series - Load a roll into the printer

note:

Do not try to open both roll covers at once; this may cause problems. Always close one cover before opening the other.

note:

The first three steps below are optional: you can start with step 4. However, in this case the printer will not keep track of the length of the roll, and will print no barcode on the roll when it is next unloaded. So you are recommended to follow all the steps, starting with step 1, unless you have turned off the Printing paper info option. See Printing paper infoPrinting paper info.

1. From the front panel, press , then the roll icon, then Load.
   Alternatively, press , then , then Paper > Paper load > Load roll 1 or Load roll 2.
   If the roll you have selected is already loaded, you have to wait while it is automatically unloaded.

   note:

   If the loaded paper cannot be automatically cut by the printer, you are asked to unload it manually.

   You should stand behind the printer when loading the lower roll (roll 2). You may stand behind or in front of the printer when loading the upper roll (roll 1).

     caution:

   If your height is less than 1.6 m, loading a roll while standing in front of the printer may cause back pain or other physical problems.

2. If you start to load roll 1 while roll 2 is already loaded, roll 2 is withdrawn to the standby position, so that it can be printed on again without reloading whenever required.

   note:

   If roll 2 cannot be automatically cut by the printer, it is not moved to the standby position; instead, you are asked to unload it manually.

   note:

   If at any time you open a roll cover while that roll is in the standby position, the roll is unloaded, and you will have to reload it the next time you want to print on it.

3. Open the roll cover, if it is not already open.
4. Rest the spindle's black end on the left side roll holder. Do not put the end completely into the roll holder.

5. Rest the blue end of the spindle on the right side roll holder.

6. With both hands, push the spindle into both roll holders at the same time.
7. If the edge of the roll is not straight or torn (sometimes due to tape used to hold end of the roll), pull the paper slightly and cut a straight edge.
8. Insert the edge of the paper into the printer.

     warning:

   Do not push your fingers inside the printer's paper path.

   note:

   When loading the upper roll, avoid inserting roll paper into the cut-sheet slot. If you do so, the printer beeps and the front panel asks you to remove the paper.

9. Roll the paper into the printer until you feel resistance and the paper flexes slightly. When the printer detects the paper, it feeds it in automatically.

10. If the leading edge of the paper has a barcode, the printer reads and then cuts off the barcode; you should remove and discard the cut strip of paper.
11. If the leading edge of the paper has no barcode, the front panel prompts you to select the paper category and type.

    note:

12. If the Printing paper info option is enabled, the front panel may ask you to specify the length of the roll. See Printing paper infoPrinting paper info.
13. The printer checks the alignment and measures the width, then the front panel prompts you to close the roll cover.
    If the roll is not correctly aligned, follow the instructions on the front-panel display.

• The automatic cutter is automatically disabled.
• The front panel reports on the home screen and in the paper tab that automatic cutting is not available.
• The roll cannot be moved to the standby position.
• The roll cannot be unloaded automatically: it must be unloaded manually.
• Automatic roll-switching is disabled, and any job sent to a standby roll is put on hold for paper until the uncuttable roll is unloaded.
