HP Designjet Printers - Unable to Print Larger than ARCH E (36 x 48 inches) from Mapinfo in Windows XP

Introduction

When trying to print larger than ARCH E from Mapinfo in Windows XP, the print will not exceed the ARCH E size of 36-inches x 48-inches. This occurs because of the printing resolution in the PPD file. Follow the instructions below to edit the PPD file to allow the file to print on the correct paper size.
  1. Close Mapinfo.
  2. In Windows explorer search the hard drive for all files with a ppd extension.
You should see several with this extension. The file(s) needed for editing are hp5000c1.ppd.
  3. Open the file using a text editor (Textpad, Wordpad, Notepad, MS Word, etc).
    note:
Textpad is recommended when editing the ppd file. This is because the Textpad software retains the .ppd extension of the file, so you do not have to remember to rename it when finished editing. Download Textpad from the following Web site: http://www.textpad.com/download/index.html#downloads.
  4. Once the file is open, scroll down to *DefaultResolution: 600dpi.
  5. Change to *DefaultResolution: 300dpi
  6. Save the file.
    note:
There should be only one hp5000c1.ppd file, however; if others are found, follow steps 3 and 4 for each of the ppd files found.
  7. Ensure Mapinfo has the 5000PS3 driver selected.
  8. Re-print the large file.
