HP Scanjet Printers - The HP Product Assistant Displays Repeatedly

Issue

The HP Product Assistant displays repeatedly on the computer.

Solution

Follow both of the solutions mentioned to resolve this issue.

Solution one: Disable Solution Updates

note:
You will not receive updates to the HP Product Assistant solution database after following this procedure. If you receive errors for which your HP Product has a solution, HP Product Assistant will not be able to help you with your error.
  1. Log on to the computer as an administrator.
    note:
If you are not logged in as an administrator, the steps mentioned can be followed but the problem will not be solved.
  2. Click Start.
  3. Click Run. The Run dialog box displays.
  4. In the Open: text box, type c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Product Assistant\bin\hprbupdate.exe, where C is the letter of the hard drive, and then click OK. The HP Product Assistant may display. If the HP Product Assistant does not display, skip to Solution two.
  5. Click the Preferences link located in HP Product Assistant automatically updates your solution list once a month. You can change the update interval on the Preference Page.
  6. Under Update Interval Preferences, click Disable Solution Updates.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Close the HP Product Assistant.

Solution two: Use the Event Handler to identify and turn off the recurring notification

Step one: Run the HP Software Update

  1. Click Start, then click All Programs.
  2. Click HP, and then click HP Software Update (or HP Update).
  3. Select the update that can be identified by the following:
    COL13076
    1577
Event Handler Patch for HP Product Assistant
  4. Follow instructions to install the patch. The patch may require you to restart the computer.

Step two: Start HP Product Assistant Manually

  1. Click Start, and then click All Programs.
  2. Click HP, and then click HP Product Assistant.

Step three: Identify the offending solution

  1. On the left side of the page, under HP Product Assistant, select View Events. If the View Events option is not available, skip the remaining steps.
    Figure : Viewing events reported
The solution that keeps popping up can be identified by looking which event in the list has the sentence “Solutions are available” beneath it and the event repeats over and over in the list. For example, in this case it would be the event: Scanner USB Failure.
  2. Click one instance of the event, solutions available will display.
    Figure : Solutions available
  3. On the right side of the page, under If this event happens again...., select Don't notify me again.
  4. Close HP Product Assistant.

Cause

  • The HP product that includes HP Product Assistant was installed by someone logged in as the administrative user, but you are logged in as a non-administrator user. You logged in as a non-administrative user before the HP Product Assistant opt-in was completed. When you try to disable solution updates, HP Product Assistant does not have the required permissions to set the preference in the Windows registry.
  • The HP Product Assistant had a defect that causes the notification settings to be ignored. This defect was repaired by installing the patch.
