Scan directly from the printer control panel to a Windows computer. Installing the print drivers and software with HP Easy Start is required to enable the scan to computer function.
macOS does not support scanning directly to a Mac from the control panel. As a scan alternative, use the HP Smart app or Apple Image Capture. For more information, go to How to scan with an HP printer.
Download HP Easy Start to install the full software and drivers for your printer.
Download and run HP Easy Start from 123.hp.com/setup.
Follow the HP Easy Start instructions until prompted to choose a software solution for your printer, and then select Full Software and Drivers, which includes HP Printer Assistant and HP Scan.
Click Continue, and then finish the setup instructions.
If prompted to turn on device sharing, click Yes.
If the Fax Setup Wizard or an Authentication Required message displays, click Cancel.
Enable the Scan to Computer setting with HP Printer Assistant for Windows. For USB-connected printers, this setting is enabled by default and cannot be turned off.
In Windows, search for and select the name of your printer, such as OfficeJet Pro 9020, to open HP Printer Assistant.
Click the Print, Scan & Fax > Scan.
From the scan settings, click Manage Scan to computer > Enable.
Change the default control panel scan settings in Windows with HP Scan.
Open HP Scan, and then choose the Scan Shortcut you want to change, such as Scan as PDF or Scan as JPEG.
Change the desired scan settings, and then click the Save icon when you are done.
Scan directly from the control panel to a Windows computer.
Place the original on the scanner glass or into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).
The ADF mechanism can damage photos. To copy or scan photos, use an alternate method, such as the scanner glass or your mobile device camera with the HP Smart app.
On the control panel, touch Scan, and then touch Computer.
Select the name of your computer in the list, such as DESKTOP-[NAME] or DESKTOP-[NAME] (USB). To find the name of your computer, search Windows for About your PC, and then find it next to Device name.
Choose Scan as PDF or Save as JPEG, and then touch Send.
Scan to email directly from the control panel using a network-connected printer. Scan to email is not supported by USB-connected printers.
For HP ENVY Inspire 7200, 7200e, 7900, 7900e, OfficeJet Pro 8020e, and 8030e printers, scan to email is only supported by control panel Shortcuts. To set up scan to email with Shortcuts, go to Scanning with Shortcuts (HP Smart app).
To set up scan to email on the control panel, create an email profile in the embedded web server (EWS) or enable it with a verification PIN.
Make sure the printer is connected to the same network as the computer.
On the printer control panel, touch Scan > Email.
If an Enable Web Services prompt displays, follow the onscreen instructions to turn it on.
Determine which message or menu displays.
If a Welcome message displays, follow the prompts to enter an email address and the verification PIN sent to that address, and then touch Log In to complete the setup. You are done.
If an Email Profile Not Set Up message displays, continue with these steps.
If a Sender Profile menu displays, scan to email is already set up. You are done.
Open the Advanced Settings in the HP Smart app or type the printer IP address into an internet browser to open the printer EWS.
Click Scan > Scan to Email > Settings.
Click the Add New Profile icon , and then follow the prompts to enter the outgoing email address, a sender display name, a PIN to restrict control panel access, and then click Next.
Enter the following outgoing mail (SMTP) server information, and then click Next when you are done.
For helping finding your SMTP server information, contact the email provider or system administrator. For an SMTP server setting examples, go to Yahoo Mail (in English) or Google Gmail (in English).
SMTP server name: The email provider server address, such as smtp.[provider].com. or smtp.mail.[provider].com.
SMTP port number: The port value for the email server, typically listed as the outgoing mail SSL or TLC port. If both are listed, select TLC for the best email encryption.
Maximum email size: Most email providers or clients limit the size of email attachments, typically ranging from 10Mb to 50Mb for free accounts.
Server authentication: The password you use to sign in to your email account, if required by the SMTP server.
To automatically email a copy to the sender, select Include sender in all email messages sent out from the printer, and then click Next.
Click Save and Test or Save only.
To change the default scan settings, click Email options, change any desired settings, and then click Apply.
To create a contact list, click Address Book, and then choose Contacts to set up a personal contact list or Address Book Settings to set up a Network Directory Server (LDAP) contact list.
Enter or search for the addresses you want to add.
Click Apply when you are done to save the list.

On the control panel, touch Scan, and then touch Email.
Choose the sender profile you want to use, and then touch Continue.
Enter the PIN, if prompted.
Enter the email recipient or touch the Address Book icon to select an existing contact.
Enter a subject for the email, and then touch the Settings icon to change the file type or name.
When you are done, touch Send.
Scan directly to a shared Windows or macOS network folder from the printer control panel.
Set up a shared folder in Windows or macOS that can be accessed by other users or devices on the same network.

Make sure the printer is connected to the same network as the Mac.
On the Mac, create a new folder to set up for sharing.
Open the Sharing settings.
Click the Spotlight icon , and then search for and open Sharing in the General settings.
Click the Apple icon , click System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
Enable File Sharing.
Click the information icon or the Add icon under the Shared Folders list.
Navigate to the folder you created, and then click Add.
Under Users, make sure your name is listed with Read & Write access.
If your name is not listed, click the Add icon to add your name.
If your name does not have Read & Write access, click the up and down arrows to open the drop-down menu, and then select it from the list.
Click Options.
Enable Share files and folders using SMB, enable any Windows user accounts you want to share with, and then click Done to complete the folder setup.
Under File Sharing, copy or write down the folder address starting with smb. You will enter this path later when sharing this folder with other users or devices.
Set up a shared folder from a Windows computer that can be accessed by other users or devices on the network.
Create a folder on your computer.
Right-click the folder, and then select Properties.
Click the Sharing tab, and then click Share.
In the Choose people on your network to share with window, select Everyone from the drop-down menu, set the Permission Level to Read/Write, and then click Share.
In the Network discovery and file sharing window, select access for a private network or all public networks.
Write down the network path from the Your folder is shared window. You will enter this path later when sharing this folder with other users or devices.
Make sure the printer date and time is set to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The printer does not support other time zones.
Open the Advanced Settings in the HP Smart app or type the printer IP address into an internet browser to open the printer EWS.
Click the Settings tab or menu.
Under Preferences, click Date & Time.
Make sure the current printer time is set to GMT.
If you do not know the GMT, open an internet browser and search for the current GMT time.
Click Apply to save any changes.
Configure the network scan folder in the advanced printer settings in HP Smart or the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
Make sure the printer is connected to the same network as the computer.
Open the Advanced Settings in the HP Smart app or type the printer IP address into an internet browser to open the printer EWS.
On the Scan tab, click Scan to Network Folder, and then click Network Folder Setup.
Click the New Folder icon .
Enter a folder display name and the path to the folder in the Network Folder Profiles list, and then click Save.
Under Log-in Authentication Options, select Always use the following credentials.
Under Authorization Requirements, enter a user name and password (typically your Windows login information), and then click Next.
If you want to restrict scanning to the network folder from this printer, add a PIN.
Select any desired default scan settings, and then click Save and Test.
Click OK after the successful test, and then close the EWS window.

On the printer control panel, touch Scan, and then touch Network Folder.
Touch Select Network Folder, and then select the folder to receive the scan.
Enter the PIN, if you created one earlier.
To preview the scan, touch the Preview icon .
To change scan settings, touch the Settings icon .
Adjust the Save As and File Name to match the scan job, and then touch Send.
Send scans directly to a SharePoint site from the printer control panel.
Make sure the printer is connected to the same network as the computer.
Open the Advanced Settings in the HP Smart app or type the printer IP address into an internet browser to open the printer EWS.
On the Scan tab, click Scan to SharePoint, and then click SharePoint Setup.
Click the Add new profile icon .
Paste the SharePoint address into the SharePoint Path field, and then click Generate Short URL.
Type a name for the SharePoint in the Display Name field, and then click Next.
Type the credentials used to access the SharePoint in the Domain, User Name and Password fields, and then click Next.
To restrict scanning to the SharePoint, add a PIN to enter when selecting the SharePoint folder during the scan job setup.
Select any desired default scan settings, and then click Save and Test.
If a minus sign in a red circle displays, the printer cannot validate the settings on your network. Click Edit to change settings, and then test again. Repeat this step until the settings are correct. Contact your network or service provider to check your settings, if necessary.
Click OK to complete the setup.
