Advanced Scan for the HP Smart app provides automated scan quality features, specialized scan job types (presets), and text conversion tools.
To access the HP Smart Advance features, your HP+ or eligible non-HP+ printer must be set up in the HP Smart app with an HP account. For more information, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).
This document only applies to Advanced Scan for the HP Smart app. For more information on how to scan, go to How to scan with an HP printer.
In the HP Smart app, the Advanced Scan Convert to Text feature saves files as searchable PDFs or editable text files.
Select one of the scan tiles on the HP Smart app home screen.
Windows, macOS: Click Scan, and then select Document Feeder or Scanner Glass from the Source menu.
Android, iOS: Tap Printer Scan or Camera Scan.
Prepare the item to be scanned.
Printer scan: Place the original on the printer scanner glass (documents or photos) or into the automatic document feeder (documents only).
Camera scan: Place the original on a flat, well-lit surface so that the device camera can take a clear capture.
Select a scan job type preset and any scan job settings, and then click Scan (Windows, macOS) or the Scan button (Android, iOS) at the bottom of the window to start the scan.
In the Preview window, select options to add, reorder, and rotate scanned items. Click the Menu icon for options to edit, replace, or delete items.
Click Save or Share/Save, and then click File Type.
Select Searchable PDF, Word Document (*.docx), or Plain Text (*txt).
Change the file name and any other settings, and then share or save the scan job.
In the HP Smart app, the Advanced Scan Book scans books and magazines and automatically flattens curved pages.

Windows, macOS: Click Scan, and then select Scanner Glass from the Source menu.
Android, iOS: Tap Printer Scan or Camera Scan.
Prepare the item to be scanned.
Printer scan: Place the item on the printer scanner glass. For best quality book scans, keep the spine perpendicular to the scanner bar and aligned with the outer edge of the glass (one-page scan) or centered on the glass (two-page scan).

Camera scan: Place the pages on a flat, well-lit surface so that the device camera can take a clear capture.
Select Book from the Advance Presets menu or from the scan-type carousel, and then select any scan job settings.

Scan the item.
Printer scan: Press and hold the scanner lid down gently to flatten the pages, and then click Scan (Windows, macOS) or the Scan button (Android, iOS) at the bottom of the window to start the scan.
Camera: Click the Book icon to choose 1 (a one-page scan) or 1|2 (a two-page scan). Align the page within the guides, click the Scan button, and then click the image of the scan in the lower-right corner to open the Preview screen.
In the Preview window, select options to add, reorder, and rotate scanned items. Click the Menu icon for options to edit, replace, or delete items.
Select an option to save, print, share, or fax the scan file.
Select Basic PDF in the Share or Save option to include multiple scanned pages in a single PDF file.
In the HP Smart app, the Advanced Scan Extract Text feature extracts text so you can copy or make changes to it.

Select the scan you want to extract, and then click Continue.
On the Text Edit screen, select the text you want to edit, delete, or copy, and then click Done. The extracted text replaces the original scan(s) in Preview.
Select an option to save, print, share, or fax the scan file.
Select Basic PDF in the Share or Save option to include multiple scanned items in a single PDF file.
In the HP Smart app, the Advanced Scan Multi-Item preset scans up to three items at a time and automatically separates them into separate files.

In the HP Smart app, the Advanced Scan ID Card preset combines both sides of an identification card automatically into a single file.

Android, iOS: Tap Printer Scan or Camera Scan.
Prepare the item to be scanned.
Printer scan: Place the ID card face down on the scanner glass.
Camera scan: Place the ID card face up on a well-lit surface so that the device camera can take a clear capture.
Select ID Card from the Advance Presets menu or from the scan-type carousel, and then select any scan job settings.

Click Scan (Windows, macOS) or the Scan button (Android, iOS) at the bottom of the window to start the scan.
Repeat these steps to scan the back of the card.
Click Next to combine the scans into a single file.
Select an option to save, print, share, or fax the scan file.
In the HP Smart app, use the Advanced Scan Scribble feature to add notes or signatures, called marks, to a scanned item.

Android, iOS: Tap Printer Scan or Camera Scan.
Prepare the item to be scanned.

Select a scan job type preset and any scan job settings, and then click Scan (Windows, macOS) or the Scan button (Android, iOS) at the bottom of the window to start the scan.
Click the Scribble icon , and then select the page you want to add a mark to.
Select an existing mark or click Create to add a new one, and then click Done to apply it to the page.
Any new marks are saved for future use until deleted.
Drag the mark to the desired location on the image, and then use the blue guides to adjust its size and orientation.
Repeat these steps to apply additional marks to your file, and then click Done.
Select an option to save, print, share, or fax the scan file.

In the HP Smart app, Advanced Scan includes features that improve scanned items automatically. These automated features are enabled by default but can be disabled if necessary.
Automatic scan quality features include:
Auto-Enhancements: Improves the color and contrast of your scans.
Auto-Heal: Removes distracting marks from scan jobs, such as hole punches and background objects.
Auto-Orientation: Rotates scans to the correct orientation.
Flatten Book Pages: Flattens curved book or magazine pages.

Enable or disable the automated scan features in the HP Smart app if necessary.
Open the HP Smart app, and then click one of the scan tiles.
Click the Enhancements icon (Windows, macOS) or tap the Settings icon (Android, iOS).
Enable or disable the features as needed.

The HP Smart app is the recommended printing software for your printer and includes standard and advanced features and settings. The features and settings vary by printer model and country/region.
HP Smart app requirements:
An HP printer (HP Smart Advanced requires an HP+ or eligible printer)
An HP Smart account
A computer or mobile device with:

macOS Mojave (10.14) or later
Android Pie (9.0) or later

If the printer is missing, Offline, or Unavailable in the HP Smart app, check the printer and device connection, and then sign in to your HP Smart account.
Make sure your device and printer are connected to the same network.
Open the HP Smart app, and then sign in to your account.
Wait a few minutes for the HP Smart app to reconnect and update the printer connection status.
If Ready displays next to the printer, you are done.
If Offline or Unavailable displays next to the printer, go to HP printer is offline or not responding for more information.
If the printer is missing from the home screen, click Add Printer or the Add icon , and then follow the prompts to re-add your printer to the app.
The advanced scan features might be missing in the HP Smart app if your printer is not eligible for HP Smart Advance, you did not create or sign in to an HP account during printer setup, or you need to sign in to your account again to access the features.
HP Smart Advanced includes Text Extract, Scribble, Book, Multi-Item, and ID Card.
Open the HP Smart app, and then make sure you are signed in to your account.
If the advanced features are now available, you are done.
If the advanced features are still missing, continue with these steps.
Make sure your printer meets the HP Smart Advance requirements.
