HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Use Rotate Offset for printouts with alternate page orientation

Introdution

HP Enterprise Printers with FutureSmart firmware version 4.7 or newer can be set up to offset the printed output with alternate portrait and landscape orientation. This feature is a system setting called Rotate Offset and applies to both multiple jobs and multiple copies of a single job as shown in the following example.

Note the following information about the Rotate Offset feature.
  • It is a printer system level setting that affects all print jobs.
  • The paper feeds from two trays, and therefore takes some additional time for print jobs to complete.
  • For a print job of multiple copies of a single sheet, the printouts will not be offset.
  • It overrides print job requests for uncollated copies.
  • It is designed to be used with printers that do not have a finisher accessory installed, although certain configurations will work in conjunction with a finisher. For more information, see the section Using Rotate Offset when a finisher accessory is installed at the end of this document.

Learn about upgrading your FutureSmart firmware

The Rotate Offset feature is one of several new features available only in FutureSmart firmware version 4.7 or newer. Check your firmware version by printing a Configuration Page from the Reports app. If you have an older firmware version, upgrade your firmware to enable this feature and maximize your printer’s capability. For instructions to upgrade your firmware, go to support.hp.com and enter your printer model in the search box. On the resulting product support home page, select How to, and then from the Select a topic drop-down menu, select Printer Setup, Installation & Updates. In the resulting topics list, select the firmware update topic for your printer.

Set up Rotate Offset and print

Follow these steps to enable the Rotate Offset feature, load paper, and print.
  1. On the printer control panel, navigate to and open the Settings app.
  2. Select Copy/PrintManage TraysRotate Offset.
  3. Select Automatic.
  4. Load and configure two paper trays: Set up one tray so the paper stack is horizontal (landscape) and set up the other tray so the paper stack is vertical (portrait). For example, load Letter in Tray 2 and Letter-Rotated in Tray 3.
    note:
Use the same size paper in each tray. Letter, A4, and A5 paper sizes are supported by most printers.
  5. Print a job, specifying the paper size that you loaded.

Override the Rotate Offset setting

You can use the Settings app to turn off the Rotate Offset feature for all print jobs. Or you can override the setting in one of the following ways:
To quickly override the Rotate Offset setting for a single job: Open the tray that is loaded with the paper in landscape orientation (long edge aligned with the front of the tray). You do not need to pull the tray all the way out. Pulling out the tray will disable Rotate Offset and print the job in a single orientation.
To adjust settings if you need to override the Rotate Offset setting frequently: Set the Manage Trays setting to use the requested tray exclusively whenever a tray is specified for a print or copy job:
  1. On the printer control panel, navigate to and open the Settings app.
  2. Select Copy/PrintManage TraysUse Requested Tray Exclusively.
  3. Select Exclusively.

Using Rotate Offset when a finisher accessory is installed

Some finishers include a Job Offset feature that creates a sideways type of printout offset and is faster than the Rotate Offset feature. If your finisher device supports the Job Offset feature setting, and it is enabled, Job Offset overrides the Rotate Offset setting.
However, if the printer has other output bins where Job Offset is not supported, you can use Rotate Offset when printing to those bins.
Rotate Offset is compatible with some operation modes that finishers provide. (Available operation modes vary by printer and finisher.)
Finisher Operation Modes that are compatible with Rotate Offset:
  • Mailbox
  • Stacker
  • Function Separator
Finisher Operation Modes that are not compatible with Rotate Offset (menu option will be removed):
  • Job Separator
  • Collator
