HP Designjet CP Series Printers - Ink Delivery System Overview

Description

For each of the four ink colors in your printer’s ink system, there are three separate components that work together as a system. The components for each color ink are color-coded to help you install them correctly.

Ink cartridge

Each ink cartridge is a large-capacity ink supply that refills the print head whenever the ink volume in the print head drops below a minimum level.

Print head

The print head has a 600-dpi thermal inkjet head for firing ink droplets onto the media and a reservoir that holds enough ink for a large number of prints. The actual number of prints between refills depends on the size and type of images you are printing.

Print head cleaner

The printer uses the print head cleaner to clean and maintain the print head to ensure the best possible image quality. It also seals the print head, when not in use, to prevent it from drying out.

Replacing an ink system

You should replace an ink system when prompted by the printer. When the printer runs out of one or more colors of ink, the printer displays the following message on the front panel: "STATUS Out of ink."
The printer displays four blocks representing the four ink colors with empty ink systems shown as blinking empty blocks.
note:
The "Out of ink" message will be displayed only if the Print check frequency for the head service is set to 1.

Getting the best performance from the printer and ink system

To get the best images from the printer and ink systems, always:
  • Install each ink system by the date on the ink system box.
  • Change all three components in each ink color together: the print head, print head cleaner, and ink cartridge should be new every time you replace a color.
  • Handle the ink system with care.

Installing

  warning:
Keep hair, jewelry, clothing, and other objects away from the printer mechanisms.
  caution:
Do not touch, wipe, or attempt to clean the print head nozzles. This can clog and damage the print head.
When installing the ink-system components, it is important that they are all at a similar temperature to the ambient temperature of the printer. Otherwise the first print that you produce may have poor image quality. Producing a print will automatically bring the ink system components to the correct working temperature and subsequent printing will produce good-quality images.
Therefore, to prevent media and ink waste, it is a good idea to store the ink system components in the same environment as the printer, or let the ink system components stabilize to the ambient temperature before installing them in your printer.
Once print heads have been installed in the printer, avoid removing them unnecessarily. The life of a print head, when removed from the printer, is one week if stored uncapped and not in an approved "garage." Always store the print head nozzles upright.
If you have more than one HP DesignJet CP series printer, it is advisable not to interchange ink system components from one printer to another.
Each of the four colors used in the printer's ink systems contains three separate components. These are:
  • a print head
  • a print head cleaner
  • an ink cartridge
The components are numbered to match the sequence in which they must be installed. The number is printed on the sleeve containing the print head, on the print head cleaner and the ink cartridge. You must install all three components (print head, print head cleaner, and ink cartridge) for each of the four ink colors.

Loading the ink system

Now that you have switched on the printer, it will run the initializing procedure and then the front panel will display the following message: "STATUS Missing ink system."
  1. Press the Replace ink system key on the front panel and wait for the print head carriage to move to the access position, at the left of the front panel.
  2. The front panel display will then prompt you to install the ink system components in the following order:
    1. Install print heads (in the print head carriage).
    2. Install print head cleaners (behind the printer’s right door).
    3. Install ink cartridges (behind the printer’s left door).

Installing print heads

note:
Each stall in the print head carriage has a dot indicating the color. When installing the print heads, you must put the correct color print head in the matching stall.
For those who have difficulty differentiating between colors, the print head colors can be identified by the part numbers on the boxes. The sequence of the stalls is, from left to right: yellow, cyan, magenta, and black.
  1. Open the window of the printer when the printer carriage stops and the front panel displays the message "Open window to access print heads."
After you open the window, the printer will display the following message on the front panel:
    Yellow Cyan Magenta Black.
Do not touch, wipe, or attempt to clean the print head nozzles or contacts. This can clog and damage the print head.
  2. Take the new print head and remove the colored protective tape from the print head’s nozzles.
  3. Insert the print head into the stall with the color dot that matches the color of the print head label. Press down lightly and push the print head away from you (toward the back of the carriage), until it snaps into place.
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the other three print heads.
    note:
Check the front-panel display. If any of the boxes are flashing, the print head must be re-seated. If the front-panel box continues to flash, refer to the User’s Guide Troubleshooting chapter.
  5. When you have finished installing the print heads, the printer front panel displays the message "Close window to continue."
  6. Close the window of the printer. The front panel will display the message "Open right door to access head cleaners."
  7. Continue with the next procedure.

Installing the print head cleaners

  1. Open the right door on the printer.
    • After you open the right door, the printer displays the following message on the front panel.
    • Do not force a print head cleaner into a slot. It will only fit in its own color slot.
  2. Take the new print head cleaner from the package and push it in and up into the matching color-coded slot until it clicks into position.
    note:
The front panel displays the message "Replace XXXX Close right door" throughout the print head cleaner installation procedure.
  3. Repeat Step 2 for the three remaining print head cleaners.
  4. Close the right door on the printer. The printer will start checking the head cleaners at this stage. The front panel will display the message "Open left door to access ink cartrg." Continue with the procedure, Installing the ink cartridges.

Installing the ink cartridges

  1. Open the left door on the printer.
  2. Take the new ink cartridge from its package and insert it into the compartment in the printer, making sure that you match the cartridge ink color with the color code on the corresponding compartment.
  3. Plug the valve on the ink cartridge valve into the printer’s valve connector, making sure that the valve is pushed fully in until you feel it click into position. The valve color must match the color code on the valve connector.
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the three remaining ink cartridges.
When you have finished installing the ink cartridges, the front panel momentarily indicates that all four cartridge valves are correctly connected and then displays the message:
    Close left door to continue.
    Ink cartridge valve connected correctly.
  5. Close the left door on the printer.
After the left door is closed, the front panel displays the message "Checking ink system," while the printer checks that all ink system components have been installed correctly.

Components installed incorrectly

If any components have been installed incorrectly, the front panel will display the message "Install incorrect-Recheck ink system." You will need to repeat the previous procedures:
  1. Installing Print heads
  2. Installing the Print head Cleaners
  3. Installing the Ink Cartridges, making sure that each component is correctly installed and seated.

Components installed correctly

If all ink-system components have been installed correctly, the front panel will sequentially display the following messages:
  • Calibrating
  • Install complete
  • STATUS Ready for media
  • STATUS Load media to align print heads
You are now ready to proceed with loading the media.
note:
Make sure the printer window and the left and right doors are closed after you have installed the ink system components. The printer will not continue with the Setup procedures while any of the doors are open.

Determining ink level

You can monitor how much ink you have remaining in each ink cartridge by selecting the ink level display in the front-panel menu.
The display provides an indication of how much ink is remaining in each of the four ink cartridges.
The display may not provide a precise measurement of the amount of ink remaining in the ink cartridges. The actual amount of ink left may vary depending on your ink system components and printer.
When the last indicator starts blinking, you may run out of ink at any time. If you do completely run out of ink, an "out of ink" warning message is displayed on the front panel.
note:
If you need to print several images unattended (for example, when printing overnight) and the ink level display shows that one or more ink systems is low on ink, you may want to replace these systems with new ink systems.
Remember:
Store the used print heads with the nozzles upright.
Keep the print head cleaners upright to avoid spilling ink.
Do not store used print heads out of the printer for more than one week.

Refilling

Whenever the amount of ink in any print head drops below the amount needed to print an E/A0-size image, the ink system refills all four print heads from the ink cartridges. The printer may stop during a very large long-axis print to refill the print heads. Long-axis prints are prints larger than E/A0 size.

Refilling the print heads from the front panel

You may want to refill the print heads before printing a very large (long axis) or dense print that may require more ink than the minimum volume in the print head. Select Refill in the Print head service menu. Refill causes the printer to refill all four print heads immediately. If a file is being printed when you select Refill, the printer waits for the current print to be completed before refilling the print heads.

Replacing

  warning:
Keep hair, jewelry, clothing, and other foreign objects away from the printer mechanisms.
Keep used ink components out of the reach of children.
  caution:
Do not touch, wipe, or attempt to clean the print head nozzles. This can clog and damage the print head.
To start the replacement procedure, press the Replace Ink System key on the front panel.
The front-panel display will prompt you to replace components in the following order:
  1. Remove and replace print heads.
  2. Remove and replace print head cleaners.

  7. Close the left door on the printer.
After the left door is closed, the front panel displays the message, "STATUS, Checking ink system," while the printer checks that all ink system components have been installed correctly. This may take a few minutes.

Components installed correctly

If all components have been installed correctly, the front panel displays: "Install complete."

Components installed incorrectly

If any components have been installed incorrectly, the front panel will prompt you to take the appropriate action to correct the problem. See the User's Guide for information about any messages that are displayed in the front panel.

After replacing the ink system

After you replace the ink system, the printer:
  • checks the ink system.
  • aligns the print heads.
  • performs a print head check.
  • calibrates the color, if the color calibration function is enabled in the front-menu.
See the User's Manual for more information on these functions.
If no media is loaded, the printer will display the message "Load media to align print heads." Load media. The alignment procedure requires a minimum media size of A3 or B-size.
When the front panel displays "STATUS Ready," you are ready to print.
note:
Make sure that the printer window and the left and right doors are closed after you replace ink system components. The printer will not print while any doors are open.

Components installed incorrectly

If any components are installed incorrectly or if the wrong components are installed, the front panel will prompt you to take the appropriate action to correct the problem. See the User's Guide for information about any messages that are displayed in the front panel.

Nozzle check

The print head check function prints a test pattern and then analyzes the pattern to determine if any print head nozzles are not placing ink on the media correctly. If non-functional nozzles are found, the printer will switch to spare nozzles on the print head to prevent any degradation in image quality. In this way, the printer is able to compensate for non-functional nozzles on the print heads.
The Extended margins setting must be selected in order for the leading and trailing edges of an image to be error-corrected.
The selections in this menu are:
Selection
Effect
Now
This selection causes the printer to perform a print head check immediately.
Off
The print head check functions is turned off. Print head checks are done only when you replace an ink system.
Frequency
This setting lets you select the frequency that print head checks are made. You can select a print head check to be done from every tenth page printed to every page printed.

For roll media

The print head check is done:
  • At the selected frequency
  • Whenever you replace an ink system
  • When the power is switched off and then switched back on.

For sheet media

The print head check is turned off.
To check the print heads, load an A3 or larger sheet in landscape orientation (wide side of sheet first) and select Check = Now in the Print head service menu.
note:
If using a third-party Raster Image Processor (RIP) to print with your printer, the printer may not be able to switch to spare nozzles. In this case, the printer will attempt to recover the nozzles.
