HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M476 - Setting up the printer (hardware)

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before installing the product software on the computer.

This document includes the following steps to set up the product:

Unpack the product

  1. Select a site to place the product that meets the following specifications:
    • A sturdy work surface, well-ventilated area, and away from direct sunlight
    • Temperature range: 15° - 32.5° C
    • Humidity range: 20% - 70%
      caution:
    HP recommends that two people move the product.
    The M476nw model weighs 27.7 kg.
    The M476dw and M476dn models weigh 287.9 kg.
  2. Take the HP product out of the box, and then remove the packaging material. Verify that the contents match the illustration.

    In Asia Pacific Countries/Regions, a USB cable is also included.

    HP recommends recycling packing materials whenever possible.
    Product requirements
    • Power outlet
    • Telephone connection for fax
    • A-to-B type USB cable or Network cable
    • Router for wireless (wireless models only)

Prepare the product and load paper

  1. Open the front door.

  2. Open the toner-cartridge drawer, and then remove the sealing tape from each toner cartridge.
    Close the toner-cartridge door and the front door.

  3. Open the rear door.

  4. Remove the orange tape and clear plastic packing material. Close the rear door.

  5. Open Tray 2.

  6. Slide open the paper length and width guides. To load legal-size paper, extend the tray by pressing and holding the extension tab while pulling the front of the tray forward.

  7. Place the paper in the tray and make sure that it is flat at all four corners. Slide the side paper width guides so that they align with the paper-size marking in the bottom of the tray. Slide the front paper length guide so that it pushes the stack of paper against the back of the tray.

  8. Slide the tray completely into the product.

Connect the network cable (optional)

To connect to a network, connect the network cable now. If not, skip this step and go to Connect the fax and power cables and turn on the product.
  caution:
Do not connect a USB cable now. To use a USB cable to connect the product to the computer, connect it when prompted during the software installation.

Connect the fax and power cables and turn on the product

  1. If you are using the product's fax capability, connect the phone cable for fax. A country/region specific adapter for the RJ11 telephone cord might be required to connect to the telephone jack.

  2. Connect the power cable between the product and a grounded AC outlet, and then turn on the product. To prevent damage to the product, use only the power cable that is provided with the product

      caution:
    Make sure your power source is adequate for the product voltage rating. The voltage rating is on the product label. The product uses either 100-127 Vac or 220-240 Vac and 50/60 Hz.
    To prevent damage to the product, use only the power cord that is provided with the product.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, if the product is connected to a network, the network recognizes the product and assigns an IP address or host name for the product.
  4. Follow the control-panel prompts to set the language and location. Under Default Settings select one of these options:
    • Self-managed: Turn on HP Update so the product automatically downloads firmware updates from the Web.
    • IT-managed: Turn off HP Update so the product does not automatically download firmware updates from the Web.

Update the firmware (optional but recommended)

HP regularly updates features that are available in the product firmware. Update the product firmware to take advantage of the most current features.
note:
Check with your network administrator before updating the product firmware.

note:
For advanced setup for network-connected products, enter the product IP address in the address bar of a web browser after software installation is complete. To find the IP address, touch the Network button on the product control panel.
