HP Chromebooks - Using the Fingerprint Reader in Chrome OS

This document for HP Chromebooks with fingerprint readers.

Set up the fingerprint reader and use it to unlock or resume the Chromebook. If the Chromebook has been restarted or you have not already logged in, then you must use your backup PIN or password to log in.

If your fingerprint is not recognized or you have signed out from your account, then use your Google account password sign in.

Set up your fingerprint reader for the first time

You have the option to register your fingerprint when you first login to Chromebook. If you skip that step, set up your fingerprint any time through your Chromebook settings.

Open the status area and click the settings icon .
On the left pane click People and then click Screen lock.
Enter your password, and then click Confirm.
To register your fingerprints, click Set up under Edit Fingerprints.
Click Add Fingerprint.
Scan your fingerprint on the fingerprint sensor.
- Hold your Chromebook screen facing you.
- Choose the finger you want to use to register (additional fingerprints can be added later).
- Position your finger on the center of the sensor (avoid scanning the last finger crease).
- To capture all areas of your fingerprint, you have to touch the sensor multiple times, lifting your finger off the sensor between each touch.

  Make sure to touch different parts of your fingerprint, including the sides, on the sensor each time.
- When your fingerprint is fully scanned, the message Fingerprint added! displays on the screen. Click Done.
- You can rename the fingerprints if needed.
Click on the time on the bottom-right, and then click the lock icon to lock your Chromebook.

When the screen is locked, the fingerprint symbol

displays below the password window. This indicates you can use your fingerprint to unlock your Chromebook.

Add additional fingerprints

Anyone whose fingerprints are saved can unlock the Chromebook.

If you have multiple users signed in on your Chromebook simultaneously, only the first signed-in user is able to unlock the Chromebook. All other users need to use an alternate unlocking method.

Open the status area and click the settings icon .
On the left pane click People and then click Screen lock.
Enter your password, and then click Confirm.
To register your fingerprints, click Set up under Edit Fingerprints.
Click Add Fingerprint.
Scan another fingerprint.
To rename your fingerprints, click the current name, type a new name, and click OK.
Click on the time on the bottom-right, and then click the lock icon to lock your Chromebook.

When the screen is locked, the fingerprint symbol

displays below the password window. This indicates you can use your fingerprint to unlock your Chromebook.

Use your fingerprint to unlock your Chromebook

After you have set up your fingerprint, to unlock your Chromebook, tap your finger on the Chromebook fingerprint sensor.

For security, you might have to unlock your Chromebook with your backup PIN or password in the following scenarios:

Your fingerprint sensor fails to recognize your fingerprint after a few tries.
When you restart (reboot) your Chromebook.
When you switch to a different account.
When more than 48 hours have passed since you last unlocked your Chromebook using your backup method.

Change your saved fingerprints

You can remove, rename, and replace saved fingerprints:

Open the status area and click the settings icon .
On the left pane click People and then click Screen lock.
Enter your password, and then click Confirm.
Click Fingerprint.
Make the changes you want.
- To add a new fingerprint, click Add Fingerprint.
- To delete a fingerprint, click delete button .
- To rename a fingerprint, click an existing fingerprint, type a new name, and then click OK.

Stop using fingerprints

If you want stop using a fingerprint, you can delete that fingerprint.

Option 1: Use only PIN, Password to unlock.

If you want to use only your backup screen lock methods, instead of your fingerprint:

Open the status area and click the settings icon .
On the left pane click People and then click Screen lock.
Enter your password, and then click Confirm.
Click Fingerprint.
To delete a fingerprint, click delete button .

The fingerprint is deleted, but you can set up the same fingerprint again.

Option 2: Remove screen lock device protection.

If you would rather not use a fingerprint, PIN, pattern, password:

It is strongly recommended to continue to lock your screen for security.

Open the status area and click the settings button .
On the left pane click People and then click Screen lock.
Enter your password, and then click Confirm.
Toggle the disable button of Show lock screen when waking from sleep.

Fingerprint not accepted

If your fingerprint is not accepted, then use your backup password or PIN to unlock the Chromebook.

If multiple users are signed in, only the first signed-in user's fingerprint works and all others are ignored.

After logging into your Chromebook, you can make your fingerprint more likely to be accepted:

Edit your fingerprints.
Add your fingerprint while holding your Chromebook in the same way that you normally hold it when unlocking.
Add up to 3 fingerprints, in case one finger gets injured.
Make sure the finger you are using is not wet or dirty.

Screen lock option disabled

If you see a Screen lock option disabled message on the fingerprint settings page, your Chromebook administrator requires a different screen lock method, like a password.
