HP Designjet CP Series Printers - Printhead Rejection

Document number: bpp03885

Introduction

The carriage is not accepting one or more printheads. Causes include dirty or worn contacts on the carriage and/or printheads, poorly seated printheads, or the printheads themselves. Use the information below to determine the cause of the failure and perform the necessary troubleshooting steps to resolve.

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Press the Replace Ink Systemkey to move the carriage so printheads can be accessed, if not already accessible.
  2. Open the top cover.
  3. Remove and reseat the suspect printhead(s). Try twice, as contacts might be worn.
  4. A flashing square or square outline will indicate the printhead. If the printhead is good, the square will change to an hourglass, and then a steady square.
  5. If unsuccessful, remove all printheads.
  6. Clean the electrical contacts in all carriage slots and on all printheads (instructions below).
  7. Reinstall one printhead at a time and watch the front panel display for the corresponding square to change to a steady square indication. Remove each printhead before inserting another into the carriage.
  8. Continue testing the remaining printheads, with one printhead in the carriage at a time.
  9. If any printhead(s) fail, replace the failing ink system and verify functionality.
  10. If the problem persists, contact HP.

Cleaning the carriage and printhead contacts

Tools needed:
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Distilled water (if available but not necessary)
      varoitus:
Avoid dry cotton swabs or dry fiber-like towels (loose lint of fibers may scratch the delicate materials thereby causing damage to the printheads).
  1. Prepare lint-free cloths dampened with warm distilled water (if available). Be sure to rotate the lint-free cloth between the thumb and forefinger to pack the cotton and remove excess water. Never drip water into the printer.
      varoitus:
Avoid using alcohol or other cleaning solvents, chemicals may cause damage to the printheads.
  2. Remove the printhead from its stall. Hold it by the top and turn it upside down so that the nozzle plate of the printhead is facing upward. Do not clean the nozzle plate.
    Kuva : Printhead nozzle plate
      varoitus:
Do not wipe or clean the actual nozzle area of the printheads. Wiping or rubbing this area may cause damage to the printhead.
  3. Using the Lint-free cloth, clean the entire area along the electrical contact pads, especially where it bends down the backside of the printhead. Wipe the contact pads very gently toward the cap end of the printhead. Following this procedure will ensure that debris/contaminants are not wiped onto or toward the nozzle plate.
  4. Prepare another clean lint-free cloth dampened with water. Be sure to rotate the lint-free cloths between the thumb and forefinger to pack the cotton and remove excess water.
  5. Using the Lint-free cloth, clean the entire area along the carriage electrical contact pads.
      vaara:
Wait until all the cleaned parts are dry.
  6. Reinsert the printheads as instructed above.
