HP Designjet 500/800 Series Printers - Loading Sheet and Roll Media

Loading a sheet of media

  1. Using the MENU and the up or down arrow keys, select the Paper menu. The following messages will appear:
    Press ENTER for Paper menu
    Ready for paper
  2. Press ENTER. A list of prompts will appear.
    Load roll
    Load sheet
    Cutter = On
    Page format
    Advance calibration
  3. Use the up or down arrow key to select Loadsheet and press the ENTER key. The Select sheet type message will appear, with a list of media types.
  4. Select the type of media being loaded (using the up and down arrow keys) and press ENTER. The default selection is whatever was used the last time.
  5. The front panel displays:
    Loading sheet
    Open window
  6. Open the window. The vacuum - which will hold the media in place - comes on.

  7. The front panel displays:

  8. Lift the blue lever up to lift the rollers.

  9. If using large sheets of media, make sure that the bin is in its unfolded position by pulling it out if necessary, so that the sheet can rest inside it.

  10. The front panel displays:
    Loading sheet
    1. Place sheet on platen
    2. Align paper with blue lines
    3. Lower blue lever
  11. Hold the media as shown in Figure 4. Load the sheet of paper by performing these steps.
    1. Place the sheet of media onto the platen. Make sure it is perfectly flat and that the front edge of the media is straight. Air suction holds the media onto the printer throughout the next few steps.
    2. Push the media under the rollers up to the blue line. Align the media with the blue line.
    3. Lower the blue lever.

  13. After a short wait the front panel displays:

    Close window
  14. Close the window.

  16. The printer now:
    • Loads the sheet
    • Checks the alignment of the media.
    • If the sheet is correctly aligned, the printer accepts the single sheet and gives a “beep”.
    • If it is not correctly aligned, the sheet is ejected; the front panel displays help instructions.
  17. When the front panel displays the following message, the printer is ready to print. If the print is large, open the media bin.

Unloading a sheet of media and installing a new roll on the printer

  1. If the printer has legs, make sure the printer wheels are locked (the brake lever is pressed down) to prevent the printer from moving.

  2. At the back of the printer, remove the empty spindle by pulling firmly on each end as indicated in Figure 7.

  3. The spindle has a stop at each end to keep the roll in position. The stop that is colored blue can be removed to mount a new roll; it slides along the spindle to hold rolls of different widths.
  4. Remove the blue colored stop from the end of the spindle, and stand the spindle vertically, with the fixed stop on the floor.

  5. Slide the new roll of media on to the spindle. Make sure the orientation of the media is loaded exactly as shown in Figure 9. If it is not, remove the roll, turn it over 180 degrees vertically and slide it back on to the spindle.

  6. Put the removable stop on to the upper end of the spindle, and push it down as far as it will go.

  7. With the blue colored roll stop on the right (as seen from the back of the printer), slide the spindle into the printer left and then right, as shown by the arrows. The media should be oriented on the roll exactly as shown in Figure 11.

Loading a roll of media

  1. Using the MENU and the up or down arrow keys, select the Paper menu. The following message will appear:

    Ready for paper
  2. Press ENTER. The following message will appear:
    Paper menu
    Load roll
    Cutter = ON
    Page format
    Advance calibration
  3. Select Load roll and press ENTER. The Select roll type message will appear, with a list of media types. The default selection is whatever was used the last time.
  4. Select the type of media (using the up or down arrow keys) and press ENTER.
  5. The front panel displays:
    Loading roll
    Lift blue lever

  6. The front panel displays:

    Feed paper into back slot
  7. From the front of the printer, lean over the top and feed the media towards you into the slot at the back of the printer. See Figure 13. (This may be easier if the media bin is pushed back out of the way.) Try to avoid touching the media in the middle (keep fingers as close as possible to each edge). Handle film and glossy media by the edges or wear cotton gloves. Skin oils can interact with the ink and cause it to smear.

  8. The front panel displays:
    Loading roll
    1. Feed paper through to front of printer
    2. Align paper with blue line
    3. Lower blue lever
  9. At the front of the printer, align the media against the blue line as shown in Figure 14:

  10. The front panel displays:
    Loading roll
    Checking paper.
    Please wait
  11. The printer checks the alignment of the media. If it is not correctly aligned, the front panel displays help instructions.
  12. The printer trims the edge of the roll.

  13. The Front Panel will display:
    Loading roll
    Wind any excess media onto roll at the back of the printer.
    Press ENTER to continue
  14. If there is an excess of loose media, wrap it back onto the roll by turning the roll; then press ENTER.

  15. When the front panel displays the following, the printer is ready to print. If the print is large, open the media bin.

Unloading a roll of media

To cut the roll, press the FORM FEED AND CUT key on the front panel. Use caution when performing this procedure since an image that has had insufficient time to dry could get damaged. To unload a roll from the printer:
  1. Select UNLOAD ROLL from the front-panel Paper menu.
  2. Lift the blue media lever.
  3. Pull the media through to the back of the machine until it is free.
  4. Wind the media back onto the roll.
  5. Then lower the blue lever.
