HP Scanjet Scanners - Installing and Uninstalling the HP Scanning Software in Windows XP

Introduction

This document explains how to obtain, install, and uninstall the HP scanning software in Windows XP.

Installing

Method one: Install from the HP scanning software installation CD

note:
If HP scanning software was installed previously, uninstall any existing HP scanning software before proceeding.
  1. Insert the HP scanning software installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Installer should automatically start.
    If the Installer does not start, click Start and click Run. In the Open box, type D:\setup.exe (where D is the letter of the CD-ROM drive).
  2. Follow the instructions on the computer screen to install the HP scanning software.
  3. When the HP Scanjet scanning software has been completely installed, turn the computer completely off following your normal shutdown procedures.
  4. Connect the interface cables between the computer and the scanner and then attach the power cord to an electrical outlet.
  5. Restart the computer while the scanner is turned on. A New Hardware prompt appears during the restart and installs the necessary drivers.

Method two: Download or purchase the HP scanning software

If you do not have the Windows XP-compatible HP scanning software, obtain it by downloading it from the HP Web site or by ordering a Windows XP-compatible scanning software CD from HP.
  1. Select Save the program to disk to download the complete HP scanning software installation program. Then use the following step-by-step instructions.

Save this program to disk

  1. On the download page, click Download Now. A File Download window opens.
  2. Select Save this program to disk. A Save window opens.
  3. In the Save In: box, select a location to save the file in. The file automatically names itself. Accept the default name.
    note:
    Many of the full HP Scanning software program downloads are very large and take some time to download.

Install the downloaded HP scanning software

note:
If HP scanning software was previously installed, uninstall any existing HP scanning software before proceeding.
Extract and install the downloaded scanning software
  1. To extract and install the software, browse to the downloaded file and double-click the *.exe that was downloaded. A Self-Extractor window opens.
  2. Click Unzip. The files are extracted and the Setup program automatically starts.
  3. Follow the onscreen prompts to install the HP scanning software.
Run this program from its current location
  1. On the download page, select Run this program from its current location.
  2. Click OK. The self-extracting zip file downloads to a temporary directory on the computer system. When the download is complete, the files are automatically extracted and the installation program starts.
  3. Follow the onscreen prompts to install the HP scanning software.

Uninstalling

Uninstall any existing HP scanning software

If HP scanning software was previously installed, uninstall all the existing HP scanning software before proceeding.
  1. Disconnect the scanner cables.
  2. Click Startand click Control Panel. The Control Panel opens.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    Identify the HP software to be removed. Most programs show a version number. The programs might appear:
    • Hemera Greeting Card Creator
    • HP Director
    • HP Document Viewer
    • HP Image Zone
    • HP Imaging Device Functions
    • HP Memories Disk
    • HP Photosmart Essential
    • HP Photosmart Premier Software
    • HP Photo and Imaging Gallery
    • HP PrecisionScan
    • HP Scanjet
    • HP Share to Web
    • HP Software Update
    • HP Solution Center
  4. Highlight a single HP programs that needs to be removed and click Change/Remove.
  5. Click Yes to remove the program and all of its components.
  6. Click Yes to All on the Shared Files warning screen.
  7. Continue from step 4 until all HP software that needs to be removed has been removed.
  8. Click OK to close the Control Panel window.
