HP Printers - SAP Printing To Printers With Embedded Device Types

This document is intended primarily for system administrators in a business environment. For a list of device types available for download for PCL5-capable printers, go to Device types for SAP printing. If a device type is not recommended for your printer, or is not available, use this document to determine whether or not the printer has an embedded device type.

A device type is a configuration file for the SAP printer driver that ensures proper functionality between the SAP data stream and the printer (or other output device) where the data is sent. The device type indicates the type of printer and provides the SAP System with the information it needs to correctly control the printer output including commands for font selection, page size, character set selection, and so on.

Some printer models do not require a separate device type for them to work in an SAP environment. As SAP develops device types for new or existing HP printer models, it determines for which currently maintained system releases those device types will be supported. Also, with each new system release, SAP embeds the device types that have been developed since the prior release into its Basis System Software for integrated application printing functionality. What if the device type I downloaded does not work? SAP provides development and testing of device types for HP printers to ensure the support of SAP standard printing functionality. SAP assumes first-tier support for these device types via its SAP Service Marketplace Web site. HP can neither support nor guarantee the functional performance of these device types.
