HP Notebook PCs - Driver for SM Bus Controller in Windows

note:

This document pertains to a problem with the driver for the SM Bus Controller. If you are looking for driver downloads, see Obtaining Software and Drivers.

1. Make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet.
2. Windows 7 and Windows Vista - Click Start , type device manager in the Search field, and then select Device Manager from the list.
   Windows XP - Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc in the Open field, and then click OK.
3. Expand the System Devices category, and then find the SM Bus Controller entry.

   note:

   If you do not see an SM Bus Controller entry, your computer does not have an SM Bus Controller or it is not recognizing the controller. Restart the computer and perform these steps again. If you still do not see an SM Bus Controller entry, your computer does not have an SM Bus Controller.

4. Right-click SM Bus Controller, and then select Update Driver from the menu that displays.
   The computer searches for and installs the correct driver automatically.
   If the driver updates successfully, you are done. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
5. Windows 7 and Windows Vista - Click Start , type dxdiag in the Search field, and then select dxdiag.exe from the list. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens.
   Windows XP - Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag in the Open field, and then click OK. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens.
6. On the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click the Display tab.
7. Find your chipset information in the Device section.

8. Open a web browser window, and then navigate to a web search page, such as Google or Yahoo.

   note:

   Check the Related links section of this document for links to some of the most common chipset manufacturers' web sites.

9. Type the full name of your chipset in the search text field, and then press Enter. Use the search results to go to the official web page of the chipset manufacturer. Browse to the driver download page, and then follow the manufacturer's instructions to download and install the drivers for your chipset.

   note:
