HP LaserJet Pro, Ultra Printers - Wireless Printer Setup (Windows)

This document is for computers with Windows and HP LaserJet Pro M102w, M104w, and LaserJet Ultra M106w printers.

To set up an HP printer on a wireless (Wi-Fi) network, install the print driver and software from the HP website.

Step 1: Prepare for installation

Before setting up the printer on your wireless network, gather the required items, and then check the printer and computer connections.

Gather the following items:
- Network name: The network name is the SSID.
- Network password (WEP key or WPA security passphrase)
- A computer connected to your wireless network
- Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL.
- Your wireless-capable printer: Place your printer close to the computer during the installation.
- USB cable: The installer might prompt you to connect a USB cable.
Make sure the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network to which you are connecting the printer.
Set up the printer, load paper into the input tray, and install the toner cartridges. For detailed steps, go to the HP Customer Support page, type your printer model and First Time Printer Hardware Setup, press Enter, and then select the document from the list.
Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.

Step 2: Connect the printer to the wireless network

Use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) to connect the printer, so that the HP installer can find the printer during installation. Refer the wireless router manual to confirm if the router supports the Wireless Setup Wizard (touch panel only) connection type.

Connect the printer with Wi-Fi Direct from a mobile device

Connect a printer to your wireless network from a laptop, tablet, smartphone, or other mobile devices using Wi-Fi Direct.

Make sure the printer’s wireless is on. If not, then based on your printer type follow one of these to turn it on:
- Printer with button LED or 2-line LCD control panel: Press the Wireless button .
- Printer with touch panel: Enable wireless from the printer’s setup menu.
From the mobile device, open Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct menu.
From the list of available networks, select the printer name with a prefix DIRECT.

Example: DIRECT-79-HP M203 LaserJet.
If prompted, enter the Wi-Fi Direct password. The default password is 12345678. If the default password does not work, use the following instructions to find the password:
- Printer with a Wireless button : Press and hold Go/Resume button for two to three seconds until the ready LED starts blinking and release the button. This prints a configuration report or network summary page. Check for the default Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct Setup section.
- Printer with 2-line LCD or touch panel: Click Network Summary from the reports menu to print a network summary page. Look for the password in the Wi-Fi Direct Setup section.
After the mobile device connects with the printer, open a browser, enter the IP address from the network summary page, and click Enter.

An Embedded Web Server (EWS) page opens.
Click the Networking tab, Wireless Configuration, select the network name (SSID) of your wireless network, enter the security passphrase, and then click Apply.

The printer is now connected to the router and your mobile device is disconnected from the printer.

Connect the printer with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

Connect the printer to your network with a router that supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), or connect the printer to your network with the Wireless Setup Wizard (touch panel only) on the printer.

If your router does not support WPS and your printer has an LED or 2-line display, skip to the step to Download and install the printer driver.
If your router does not support WPS and your printer has a touchscreen display, connect the printer with the Wireless Setup Wizard.

Printers with an LED or 2-line display

Use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) to connect the printer.

On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button for two or more seconds, and then release the button when the wireless light starts blinking.
Within two minutes, press the WPS button on your wireless router.
Wait up to two minutes while the printer automatically establishes a network connection with the wireless network.

After the printer connects to the network, the wireless light is on and steady.

Printers with a touchscreen display

Use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) to connect the printer.

From the home screen on the printer control panel, swipe left, and then touch Setup.
Swipe up, and then touch Network Setup.
Touch Wireless Menu, and then touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
Touch Pushbutton, and then touch OK.
Within two minutes, press the WPS button on your wireless router.
Wait up to two minutes while the printer automatically establishes a network connection with the wireless network.

After the printer connects to the network, the wireless light is on and steady.

Connect the printer with the Wireless Setup Wizard (touch panel only)

Connect the printer to your network from the printer control panel with the Wireless Setup Wizard so that the HP installer can find the printer during the installation.

From the home screen on the printer control panel, swipe left, and then touch Setup.
Swipe up, and then touch Network Setup.
Touch Wireless Menu, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.

The wizard searches for and displays a list of available networks.
Touch the name of your network.

If the list does not contain your network name, enter it manually.
1. Touch Enter SSID.
2. Type the network name using the on-screen keyboard.
  
  note:
  You must enter the exact uppercase (capital) and lowercase (small) letters.
3. When you finish entering the new network name, touch OK.
  
  The printer attempts to connect to the network.
When prompted, enter the WEP or WPA passphrase.
1. Type the key or passphrase using the on-screen keyboard.
2. When you finish entering the WEP or WPA passphrase, touch OK.
  
  The printer connects to the network.

After the printer connects to the network, the wireless light is on and steady.

Step 3: Download and install the print driver

Download and install the latest printer software.

note:
If an Auto Wireless Connect screen displays during installation, use it to complete the wireless setup. Otherwise, follow the guided steps in the installation software to install the printer driver by HP Easy Start.

Disconnect any USB cables from the printer.
Go to 123.hp.com/laserjet, and then click Download to download and run HP Easy Start.
When prompted to select your printer, click My Printer Is Not Shown.

A Printer Not Found screen displays.
Click Continue, and then select Wireless network (if applicable).
Click Continue, and then follow the on-screen prompts to set up your printer on a wireless network.

note:
If the download fails, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit. Confirm your version of Windows is correct. Under the Driver-Product Installation Software heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.

What if I do not know my wireless network name or password?

Use these recommendations and procedures to troubleshoot and avoid wireless connectivity issues.

Restart the printer and the computer: Restarting the computer and the printer can clear error conditions.
Confirm the printer connection and network name: On the printer, make sure the blue light next to the Wireless icon is on and steady. Open the Wireless network menu to make sure the printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
Move the printer and router closer together: Move the printer and the computer closer to your wireless router, to within 6 ft (1.8 m). Wireless signals are weaker at greater distances between the printer and the router.
Manually connect the printer to the network: Many HP printers have a Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer control panel network or wireless settings menus. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to the network.
Restart the router: If you are experiencing a slow or intermittent wireless connection, restart your router. Consult your router manufacturer, Internet service provider, or network administrator for instructions on how to restart the router.
Check the router band setting: Many routers operate in both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequency bands, but not all HP printers support both bands. Make sure the 2.4 GHz router band is turned on and broadcasting. If the router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs) for each band, connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz band SSID.
Check your firewall software: Your firewall software might prevent the printer from accessing the computer. Accept or allow any firewall messages that display during the printer software download and installation. You can also configure the software to allow HP downloads and installations.
Check for obstructions between the printer and the router: Remove any metal objects between the printer, the computer, and the access point (router). Objects such as refrigerators or metal bookcases can interfere with wireless signals.
Check for other devices that emit radio and wireless signals: Move any devices that emit radio signals, such as microwaves and cordless telephones, farther away from the printer.
Set the IP address on the printer: Your printer can bypass automatic IP address assignment by DHCP and use any valid IP address you choose. Use the control panel menu to type an IP address that is valid for use on your local area network.

What if the printer is not found during the installation?

The installer software cannot set up the printer if it is not available on the network or if there is a problem with your local network.

Can I change my printer connection type after the driver install completes?

Yes. To change from a wireless connection to a USB or wired network connection, use the Printer Setup & Software utility that installed with your printer software.

On your computer, search for the printer name, and then click the name of the printer.

The printer software opens.
Click Tools, and then click Device Setup & Software.
Click Connect a new device, and then follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer for your preferred connection type.

What if the HP Installer recommends to send the wireless settings to my printer?

If you install the print driver within 120 minutes of setting up the printer, you might see a Yes, send and store my wireless settings on the device (recommended) option during the installation.

HP Auto Wireless Connect automatically connects your printer to your wireless network without cables or entering network name and password settings. Many HP printers use this method to connect, depending on your computer and network environment.

HP recommends this network setup method if it displays. If this method does not display, you can connect to the wireless network with a temporary USB connection.

What print driver types are available?

Depending on your printer, a range of drivers might be available either from the HP website or through Windows. If your printer came with an installation CD, confirm that it supports Windows before you use it to install your printer.

Full feature driver download (recommended)

HP provides full feature print drivers for many printers. These drivers provide full product functionality, plus valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
Basic driver download

The basic driver is smaller than the full driver and downloads quickly. It provides basic printing functions. However, for multifunction printers, it does not provide the software needed by most users to copy and fax from the computer and to use all the scanning features.
