Blinking Lights

The following sections describe the most common blinking lights combinations that display on the printer control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

There might be more than one solution for some blinking lights patterns. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking lights pattern, try each solution to resolve the issue.

Issue: The Attention light is blinking and an 'E' displays

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power button light: On
Estimated Ink Level lights: On
Number of Copies display: E
Attention light: Fast blinking

Cause

The cartridge access door is open.

Solutions

Solution one: Close the cartridge access door

Make sure that the cartridge access door is completely closed. The door snaps into place when it is closed completely. You might have to press the Power button again to resume the task.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If you closed the cartridge door and the error still displays, or if you cannot close the door completely, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: One or both Estimated Ink Level lights blink, the Attention light blinks, and an 'E' displays

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power button light: On
Estimated Ink Level lights: An ! blinks fast (the ! might display above both the color and the black the ink level indicator, or it might display above only the black or the color ink level indicator)
Number of Copies display: E
Attention light: Fast blinking

Cause

One or both of the cartridges are missing, defective, or have tape on them, or there is a carriage jam.

Solutions

Solution one: Check cartridge compatibility

Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.

If your cartridges are not compatible, replace them with compatible HP cartridges, and then refer to the previous solution for steps to install the new cartridges.

note:
HP cannot guarantee the quality of refilled or remanufactured cartridges.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Remove and reinsert the cartridges

Step one: Remove the cartridges

Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

note:
If the carriage does not move to the center, continue to the solution in this section to clear a carriage jam.

Press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull it out of its slot.

If the cartridge has a pink pull tab covering the nozzles, pull the pink pull tab to remove it.

Repeat these steps to remove the other cartridge.

Step two: Reinstall the cartridges

Hold the cartridge by its sides.

caution:
Do not touch the cartridge contacts or nozzles.
Slide the cartridge into its designated slot. The black parallelogram icon () designates the slot for the black cartridge, and the magenta half circle icon () designates the slot for the color cartridge.

Repeat these steps to reinsert the other cartridge.

Step three: Print a Printer Status Report

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Release both buttons at the same time. The printer prints a Printer Status Report.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution three: Clean the cartridge electrical contacts

Follow these steps in the order presented to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.

Step one: Clean the electrical contacts

Gather the following materials:
- Dry foam rubber swabs, lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apartor leave fibers (coffee filters work well)
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that candamage the print cartridges)
  
  caution:
  Do not use platen cleaners or alcohol to clean the cartridge contacts. These can damage the cartridge or the printer.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent, and then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Lightly press down on a cartridge to release it from its slot, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.

caution:
Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove andclean each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outsidethe printer for more than 30 minutes.
Hold the cartridge by its sides.
Dip a clean foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeezeany excess water from it.
Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts.

caution:
Do not clean the ink nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge.

Allow the contacts to dry for about 10 minutes.
Clean the contacts in the carriage inside the printer.

Either let the carriage contacts sit for 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it.
Hold the cartridge by its sides.

Slide the cartridge into its designated slot. The black parallelogram icon () designates the slot for the black cartridge, and the magenta half circle icon () designates the slot for the color cartridge.

Repeat these steps to clean the contacts on the other cartridge.
When both cartridges are clean and reinserted, close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Solution four: Clear a carriage jam

The carriage, which holds the cartridges, stalls inside the printer causing the Attention light to blink. Follow these solutions to clear a carriage jam.

Solution one: Turn the printer off and on again

Step one: Restart the printer

Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Print a test page to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Release both buttons at the same time. The printer prints a Printer Status Report.

Solution two: Clear any jammed paper

Step one: Remove any loose paper from the tray

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage theprint mechanism.

Step two: Clear any jammed paper from the rear of the printer

Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer, and then unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.

warning:
You must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the HP printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.
Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer if you have a USB connection to the computer.
In the rear of the printer, press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Pull the door away from the printer to remove it.

Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the printer. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

note:
Use a flashlight to thoroughly check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more jams are likely to occur.

Reattach the rear access door to the printer.

Step three: Clear any jammed paper from the front of the printer

Open the cartridge access door.

Gently remove any jammed paper and bits of torn paper from the cartridge access area. To avoid tearing any whole sheets of paper, pull the paper with both hands.

note:
Use a flashlight to thoroughly check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more jams are likely to occur.
Close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then reconnect the USB or Ethernet cable.
Plug the power cord back into the power source or electrical outlet.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Step four: Print a Printer Status Report

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Solution three: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Step one: Check the carriage path for obstructions

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Open the cartridge access door. If the carriage tries to move to the center of the printer, allow it to move to that position.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.

warning:
To avoid the risk of electrical shock, you must unplug the power cord before moving the carriage by hand and resetting the paper feed mechanism.
Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.
Check for and remove any loose paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.

note:
Use a flashlight to thoroughly check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more jams are likely to occur.

Reach into the cartridge access area, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer, move the carriage to the left side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
Remove any loose paper or objects found.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer by gently pushing the carriage to the left, and then to the right.
Close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then reconnect the USB or Ethernet cable.
Plug the power cord back into the power source or electrical outlet.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Solution four: Plug the All-in-One directly into a wall outlet

Step one: Plug the All-in-One directly into a wall outlet

Plug the product directly into an electrical outlet to make sure that the power source functions correctly.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors.
Plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Try the task again.

If the issue persists, try a different electrical outlet.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Solution five: Reset the All-in-One

Step one: Reset the All-in-One

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
Turn the printer on.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Solution five: Replace an old or defective cartridge

If the ! blinks above the color ink level indicator, replace the color cartridge. If the ! blinks above the black ink level indicator, replace the black cartridge. If the ! blinks above both indicators, replace both cartridges.

Step one: Remove the old cartridge

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent, and then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Lightly press down on a cartridge to release it from its slot, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it.

Step two: Install the new cartridges

Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.

Load the alignment page print side down on the scanner glass.

Solution six: Service the All-in-One

Issue: The Number of Copies light blinks and displays a Paper icon, and the Attention light blinks

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power button light: On
Estimated Ink Level lights: ! On
Number of Copies display:! Fast blinking with a Paper icon
Attention light: Fast blinking

Cause

The paper tray is empty, or a paper jam has occurred.

Solutions

Solution one: Restart the printer

Step one: Turn off the All-in-One, and then on again

Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Print a test page to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Solution two: Check the condition of the paper, and then reload it

Follow these steps to check the paper.

Step one: Open the paper tray

Place your index finger at the top of the closed input tray at the front of the printer.
Gently lower the tray until it is horizontal and stops.
Pull out the paper tray extender.

You might have to press the Power button again to resume the task.

Step two: Check the condition of the paper

Remove the stack of paper from the tray.
Check for obstructions inside the tray. Use a flashlight to view the mechanism inside the tray to make sure that nothing blocks the paper from engaging with the rollers. Even small pieces of paper can cause paper feed issues.

note:
If you find obstructions in the paper path, skip to the section on cleaning the rollers.
Examine the condition of the paper, and then replace any ripped, dusty, curled, wrinkled, or bent paper.
Make sure that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type. Never load mixed types of paper in the tray. The product can only process one type of paper at a time.
Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
Make sure that the stack of paper contains no fewer than 10 sheets and no more than 25 sheets of paper.

note:
You need to use 10 to 25 sheets of paper only for purposes of these troubleshooting steps. When the issue is resolved, you can resume loading paper according to the paper tray capacity specifications for your product.

Step three: Reload the paper

Pull out the tray extender.

Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.

Load paper in the input tray with the short edge forward and the print side down. Gently slide the paper stack into the tray until it stops.

Check the control panel to see if the lights are still blinking.

Step four: Print a Printer Status Report

Print a test page to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Solution three: Adjust the print settings

Step one: Adjust the print settings

Open the Print settings.
1. In Word 2003 and 2010, click File, and then click Print.
2. In Word 2007, click the Office button (), and then click Print.
Make sure that your printer is in the Name or Printers drop-down list box, and then click Properties or Printer Properties.
Click the Features or Paper/Quality tab.
Select a paper size from the Paper Size drop-down list. For example, if you want to print on 8.5 x 11 (letter) sized paper, select Letter. If the required paper size is not in the drop-down list, follow these steps to create a custom paper size.
1. Select Custom from the drop-down list.
2. In the Custom Paper Size dialog box, type a name for the new custom size.
3. In the Width and Height boxes, type the dimensions.
4. In the Units dialog box, select the unit of measurement, inches or millimeters, and then click Save.
5. Click OK to close the Custom Paper Size dialog box, and then click OK again to close the Properties window.
  
  note:
  You must exit the Properties window to apply your changes.
6. Open the Properties window again, and select the new custom size from the Size drop-down list.
Select the paper type.
1. In the Paper Type or Type is drop-down list, click More.
2. Click the desired paper type, and then click OK.
In the Paper Source drop-down list, select the paper source.
Change any other settings, and then click OK to close the Properties window.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Print a test page to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Load plain white paper in the tray.
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and the Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Experiencing frequent or recurring paper jams?

The following recommendations can help prevent recurring paper jams in your HP product.

Before loading paper in the tray, hold the stack of paper, and then tap the bottom edge on a flat surface so that the stack is even on all sides.
Make sure that the length and width adjusters on the tray are correctly positioned, and then push the stack of paper forward until it stops in the tray.

caution:
Do not force the paper to move too far forward in the tray.
Do not overload the tray with paper.
Only add paper to the tray when the product is not printing.
Make sure the HP product supports the paper type. See the documentation that came with the HP product for more information.
Do not print on paper with paper clips or staples attached.
Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or paper that does not lie flat.
Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types, weights, or sizes of paper.
Do not use paper that is too thin, too thick, or too glossy for the product.

Paper jam causes

The following factors can cause paper jams:

Paper loaded incorrectly in the paper tray.
Damaged or dirty paper rollers.
Torn, wrinkled, or damp paper loaded in the paper tray.
The rear access door might not be closed or is not locked into place.
Paper was added to a stack already in the tray while the HP product was printing.
The tray contains more than one type of paper.
The paper is jammed inside the HP product where you cannot see it.
An obstruction is blocking the paper path.
Torn pieces of paper from a previous jam are stuck in the product.
The tray is too full.
If printing on an envelope, the edges of the envelope are bent.

Step one: Remove any loose paper

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage theprint mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the printer

caution:
Never pull jammed paper from the front of the printer. If you can pull it from the rear of the printer or the tray, always try the rear first. Pulling paper from inside the front cover can cause mechanical damage to the printer.

Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer.
Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Pull the door away from the printer to remove it.

Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the printer. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

Use a flashlight to thoroughly check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more jams are likely to occur.

Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the printer

Carefully remove any jammed paper from the front of the printer.

note:
Remove paper from the front of the printer as carefully as possible. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more paper jams are likely to occur, and this could damage the print mechanism.
Close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Step four: Print a Printer Status Report

Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
On the control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Release both buttons at the same time. The printer prints a Printer Status Report.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution five: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Use the following steps to make sure that the carriage moves freely.

Step one: Check the paper path

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

Without turning off the printer, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

caution:
You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.
Check for any paper or object that might be restricting the carriage.

note:
You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions you find.
Reach inside the printer, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer, move the carriage to the left side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
Close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Plug the power cord back into the power source or electrical outlet.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

Solution six: Clean the paper feed rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Step one: Clean the rollers

Gather the following materials:
- A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that will not come apart or leave fibers
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the printer)
Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

caution:
You must disconnect the power cord to reach into the printer without the risk of an electrical shock.
Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Pull the door away from the printer to remove it.

Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Press the cloth against the paper feed rollers, and then rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

Allow the rollers to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
Check the paper feed rollers on the rear access door to make sure that they are clean, free of paper bits, and rotate freely.

Gently push the rear access door into the printer until it snaps firmly into place.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
If the printer does not turn on automatically, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
On the control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Solution seven: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the printer and print a Printer Status Report.

Step one: Perform a power reset

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.

Step two: Print a Printer Status Report

Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
On the control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and Resize to Fit button at the same time.

Issue: After pressing the Scan button, the Power button and Attention lights blink fast for 10 seconds

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Power button light: Blinks fast for 10 seconds, and then remains on
Estimated Ink Level lights: On
Number of Copies display: On
Attention light: Blinks fast for 10 seconds, and then turns off

Cause

The scan to the computer fails if the computer is turned off, if the full feature HP software is not installed, or if there is an issue with the connection to the computer.

Solutions

Solution one: Run an automated tool to troubleshoot scan issues (Windows only)

Step one: Download the automated tool

Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to automatically diagnose and resolve printer hardware and connection issues.

Step two: Run the tool

Follow these steps to run the tool on your computer.

Turn on the printer and load plain paper in the main tray.
On the Print and Scan Doctor welcome screen, click Start to locate your printer.

note:
If your printer is not found, click My product is not listed, and then follow the instructions to troubleshoot the connection.
Select your printer, click Next, and then follow the instructions to begin the troubleshooter.

Step three: Resolve any scan issues

Review the status of each test result.
- : The printer passed the test.
- : An issue was discovered and automatically repaired.
- : The test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.
- : An issue was found. Follow the instructions to resolve the issue.
Load an item on the scanner glass, and then click Test Scan to confirm the scanner is working.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Install the HP software

You must install the HP printer software to scan from the printer to the computer.

Turn on the printer.
Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.
If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
Under the Driver heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the computer and the printer

Restart your computer.
With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
Wait 15 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the printer, and then reconnect the power cord to the electrical outlet.
If the printer does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Check the USB connection to the computer

note:
Make sure to turn on the printer before continuing with these steps.

Step one: Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable

Follow these steps to make sure that the USB cable is connected correctly to the printer.

Connect the small end of the USB cable to the rear of the printer.

The icon on the USB cable faces up when the cable is connected correctly to the printer.

Try scanning the document again.

Step two: Test the USB connection

Follow these steps to test the USB connection, depending on your connection type.

To test the USB connection, choose your USB connection type:

The USB cable connects directly from the printer to the computer
1. Connect the USB cable to another available USB port. For example, if the USB cable is connected in front of the computer, connect it to a port in the rear of the computer.
2. Restart the computer and the printer.
3. Try scanning the document again.
The USB cable connects to a USB hub or a laptop docking station
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the hub or docking station, and then connect it directly to the computer.
2. Restart the computer and the printer.
3. Try scanning the document again.
  
  note:
  If the printer works after you connect the USB cable directly to the computer, there might be a problem with the hub or docking station. Either leave the USB cable connected directly to the computer, or contact the manufacturer of the hub or docking station for troubleshooting.

If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step three: Try a different USB cable

Try using a different USB cable.
Try scanning the document again.

If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step four: Remove additional USB devices that connect to the computer

If you have several USB-connected devices, the computer might not have sufficient power supplied to the USB ports to detect all of them.

Disconnect all USB devices from the computer except for the keyboard, the mouse, and the printer.
Try scanning the document again.

note:
If removing other devices resolves the issue, HP recommends installing a powered hub to connect multiple USB devices.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: Power button and Attention lights blink, and an 'E' displays

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Estimated Ink Level lights: On

A scanner failure has occurred.

Solutions

Solution one: Turn the printer off and on again

Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Check the lights on the control panel to make sure that they are no longer blinking.
Press the Scan button () to try the scan job again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet

The power source your printer is plugged into might not function properly. Follow these steps to plug your printer directly into a wall outlet.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Disconnect the printer cord from any power strip or surge suppressor, and then plug it directly into a three-prong wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Press the Scan button () to try the scan job again.
If the printer does not scan, follow the same steps and try a different wall outlet.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

note:
The printer might not turn off after pressing the Power button. Continue to the next step regardless.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
Wait 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Check the lights on the control panel to make sure that they are no longer blinking.
- If the control panel lights are no longer blinking, proceed to the next step.
- If the control panel lights continue to blink, skip to the next solution.
Press the Scan button () to try the scan job again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Service the All-in-One

Issue: All the lights are blinking fast

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

A fatal error has occurred.

Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

note:
The printer might not turn off after pressing the Power button. Continue to the next step regardless.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
Wait 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Check the lights on the control panel to make sure that they are no longer blinking.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Issue: Ink-level indicator (!) and ink gauges are blinking fast, and the Attention light is on

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Estimated Ink Level lights: ! above one of the ink level indicators and the bottom notch on the same ink level indicator blink fast
Number of Copies display: 0
Attention light: On

Cause

The indicated cartridge is low on ink.

Solutions

Solution one: Replace the cartridges

Follow these steps to replace the cartridge that is low on ink.

note:
If the ! blinks above the color ink level indicator, replace the color cartridge. If the ! blinks above the black ink level indicator, replace the black cartridge. If the ! blinks above both indicators, replace both cartridges.

Step one: Remove the old cartridges

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent, and then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Lightly press down on a cartridge to release it from its slot, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.

caution:
Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove each cartridge, one at a time, if both need to be replaced.

Step two: Install the new cartridges

Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
Hold the cartridge by its sides.

caution:
Do not touch the cartridge contacts or nozzles.
Slide the cartridge into its designated slot. The black parallelogram icon () designates the slot for the black cartridge, and the magenta half circle icon () designates the slot for the color cartridge.

The cartridge rests in its slot at a slight upward angle.
Press the cartridge in to snap it into place.

Repeat these steps, if necessary, to insert the other cartridge into its designated slot.
Close the cartridge access door.

Wait for the printer to print an alignment page.
Load the alignment page on the scanner glass.

Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Scan button () to complete the alignment.

Workaround: Print in ink-backup mode (single-cartridge mode)

You can print with only one cartridge installed (ink-backup mode, also called single-cartridge mode). Theink-backup mode is initiated when a cartridge is removed from the carriage. During ink-backup mode, the printer can only print jobs from the computer.You cannot initiate a print job from the control panel (such as copying or scanning anoriginal).

The printer prints more slowly in this mode, and printouts might be of lesser quality. If you print with only the black cartridge, no color will print. If you print with only the color cartridge, no black ink will print.

note:
When the printer operates in ink-backup mode, a message isdisplayed on the computer screen. If the message is displayed and two cartridges are installedin the printer, make sure that the protective piece of plastic tape has been removed fromeach cartridge. When plastic tape covers the cartridge electrical contacts, the printercannot detect that the cartridge is installed.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent, and then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Lightly press down on the cartridge that is low on ink to release it from its slot.

Continue to print as normal.

note:
You might see a recurring message on your computer that tells you that the printer is in single-cartridge mode. The Attention light also continuously blinks in ink-backup mode. These symptoms recur until you install two working cartridges.

Issue: The Power light is blinking slowly or blinking normally

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:

Issue: All the lights are off

Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the printer and plugged into an electrical outlet.

Check the rear of the printer to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.
Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.
Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
If the printer does not turn on, follow the same steps and try a different wall outlet.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Press the Power button more slowly

The printer might not respond if you press the Power button too quickly.

Press the Power button slowly to turn on the printer.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Test the power with a compatible power cord from a different printer

If you have another available power cord that is compatible with the printer, use the alternate cord to test the power.

Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Connect the alternate power cord to the rear of the printer.
Plug the alternate power cord into the wall outlet.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

If the printer turns on with the alternate power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Contact HP to replace the power cord. Right-click the following link, How to Buy HP, to buy a compatible power cord.
If the printer does not turn on with the alternate power cord, continue to the next solution.
