HP PCs - Storage and memory (RAM) verification (Windows 11, 10)

The total and usable storage space (SSD or HDD) and memory are important for the smooth perforformance of your computer. Verify the usable storage space and the total memory (RAM) if you run out of space for your data or if your computer is slow.

Verify the storage details of your computer

Storage is either the hard-disk drive (HDD) or the solid-state drive (SSD) where your personal data files are stored. Storage also stores the operating system, critical system files, applications, and any other data.

Verify the type of drive

Use Task Manager to verify if you have an HDD or SSD.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Task Manager.

  2. Click the Performance tab.

Under the name and letter of the drive, you can see if it is an HDD or SSD.

Note:

If you have a dual storage system of HDD and SSD, both drive types are listed in the Performance tab.

Verify the total disk space in Windows

Use Disk Management in the Computer Management tool to verify the total amount of storage space and to check if you have any unallocated storage space on your drives.

  1. To open the Computer Management window, right-click Start, and then select Computer Management. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  2. In the left pane, click Disk Management.

The total storage space appears in the right pane.

You can also view the amount of unallocated space on the drive from the Computer Management window. Unallocated space appears in a section without a partition label and with a black bar at the top. Unallocated space is the unused space on the hard drive that cannot be used.

Verify the memory (RAM) details of your computer

Your computer uses the memory to work on applications; for example, editing a word document or opening an email. The information stored on memory is temporary and is erased when the computer is turned off. Use Task Manager to verify the total computer memory and speed.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Task Manager.

  2. Click the Performance tab, and then click Memory.

The total amount of memory, memory speed, and the number of used memory slots for your computer is displayed in the right pane.
